How Stein managed big game weeks

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

    Cupar is a nice town to live in with good schooling both at Primary and Secondary level.

     

    Has its own station with easy access to Dundee, Edinburgh and beyond. Plenty of buses to Dundee, St Andrews and Edinburgh as well. Good shopping and although there is a dearth of big hotels some good pubs in the town. And if you’re into rugby , obviously when Celtic are not playing on a Saturday which is often,Howe of Fife the best team in Fife play out of Cupar. and are worth watching.

     

     

    More importantly plenty of Tims pile on to the train when Celtic have a game in Dundee.

    STV – what a pathetic gang of desperate Huns. All the way to Bolton just to try and induce a suitable line from an ex-Celtic manager to suit their agenda. They didn’t even get it but spun it enough as to give them the headline they went with.

     

     

    Lenny should sue for misrepresentation. Scurrilous Huns; living up to their reputation.

    Loughreacelt, he’ll have no problem with hoops, Howe of Fife Rugby play in hoops (unfortunately, blue and white). Bell Baxter is a decent secondary school. If your lad gets into rugby, the school and Howe have a very good shared setup.

     

     

    Damn fine part of Scotland to inhabit. Good restaurants abound and Tims plenty

    Greyfriars PS in St Andrews has a big catchment area, including Cupar (and Tayport, where this weegie lives) and is a highly rated school. My son loves it.

    I’m sorry if I’m assuming too much but Greyfriars is the only RC primary school for the North of Fife. If that’s something you have to consider.

    Went complaining to a wise old man once about a certain group of folk that I thought was a “Clique”.

     

    His avice took me by suprise

    Lenny also said he wouldn’t argue against the content of the advert.

     

     

    He did clearly give a sighed ‘yeah’ in answer to the leading question but then quickly continued on without any reference to OF, indeed clearly avoided saying yes in any meaningful way but did use the term ‘derby’.

    I take your points on Biton but we really are short in CM players now. Can’t see anyone in there other than a fit Charlie Mulgrew(and only domestically)

     

     

    Ledley was great in there(Kayal a lot less so), we all miss Wanyama.

     

     

    Weakest part if the squad IMO

     

    The conjecture will be around RB (having 2 players fit again) and the ongoing roulette around the CF and the 3 musketeers behind.

     

     

    Haven’t a clue on past selections which way he will go but my guess is
