How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

Disappointed that Lennon agreed to the interview.

However, does anyone here believe that STV sent/organised a camera/sound crew and sent the fat reporter to Bolton for a three minute interview?

    Naw, me neither.

The full unedited interview would have been more interesting I’m sure.

OK.Let Lenny come out tomorrow and say it was a load of misquotes.I wont hold my breath, will you?.

Too many Celtic”Legends”having their say on the subject, and not backing up the support.Lenny had plenty of time to say”As far as I am concerned, they died in 2012″.Did he?.No.

Show me one Celtic player who has backed up the “Huns are dead”.None.

We can go on about everyone else, but our own wont even support us with the truth.

Some legends have died in my eyes.Open yours.

  2. IMO for Sunday we need Celtic men, grafters and players who know what winning this game means to the Celtic supporters, that means Scott Brown, Stefan Johansen, Tony Stokes, Kris Commons, James Forrest, Emilio Izaguirre and Leigh Griffiths must start.

Craig Gordon , Virgil Van Dijk, Jason Denayer & Mikael Lustig (If fit) are no brainers for me.

All being well at around the 60-70 minute mark or if needed earlier – Liam Henderson on for Tony Stokes, John Guidetti on for Leigh Griffiths and Nir Bitton on Kris Commons but push Stefan Johanson into the Kris Commons position.

Callum McGregor and Stefan Scepovic should be nowhere near Sunday’s game IMO

    Gordon

    Lustig Denayer Virgil Izzy

    Brown Johansen

    Forrest Commons Stokes

My son is playing in Cowdenbeath for his school ( Cults Academy) on Thursday – he’s S1.. So good for him to escape school for a day and play boys from Fife…

  4. To all of you getting a bee-in-yur bonnet – Lennon ( however much I respected as our manager ) is ex-Celt – how many quotes have youz seen about the upcoming fixture from current ( apologies ) Celts quoting Old Firm?

    H.H.

  5. A couple of fans advocating that “Young Henderson”should,or could play on Sunday!!!!.My @rse.Sunday is for experienced campaigners.People who have been through this game before.Henderson will get kicked all over the park.He has never experienced this before.Stokes,Broony,Forrest,,even Mulgrew,,and Commons must play. They have enough to get the more experienced players through this game, than worry about a “Rookie”.

Sometimes I wonder about the thinking on here.

Before anyone comes on and gives it the “What about the others who have not played in this game”.They have plenty of experience, are street wise enough to handle this mob.

The young boy could be run, kicked out of it.Street wise is the name of this game.

    That’s fair comment.

Think the only cause for concern opinion I’ve read on here is the influence of the MIB.

    ——————

I think one cause for concern is no matter who we’ve played in the past, we have an uncanny knack of losing games we should win, especially cup games at Hamdump.

  7. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

    the_huddle

If you recall those games those uncanny knacks were ably assisted by the MIB’s ?

But as Turkeybhoy mentioned, we will skelp them.

  8. Turkeybhoy,

I agree to an extent, LH shouldn’t start, but at some point he needs to be blooded in high pressure games….only then can we see his judge his real potential

  9. jude2005 is Neil Lennon \o/ on

What was the name of the restaurant Celtic had their lunch on a Saturday before the game?

  10. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

Doesn’t really matter what age someone is, as long as the attitude to destroy them is driving…….

  11. Turkeybhoy,

I can’t see a problem in Henderson playing.

Many a young player (and old…lubo anyone?) has had great debut games against this mob in their preliquidated state.

  12. Cultsbhoy,

I teach at Turriff and our S2 team played a cup game at cults back in September. They gubbed us 11-1! I was very impressed with how they played and the technical ability of the boys, I’m sure the S1 team are a decent side also, all the best to them in Cowdenbeath!

Our boys were mainly S1 with a few S2s as we are a small school and although they’re not the most talented they’re a great bunch to work with, no egos (which is rare).

Our senior boys, on the other hand, are quite a decent side and they play aboyne in a cup quarter final tomorrow and they are due to play a city school in the semi of another trophy but can’t remember who (don’t think it’s Cults though).

Was driving home from the airport. Was getting so scunnered by radio shortbread who seemed to running a sponsored event with the aim being to say old firm the most times in a minute.

So ended up on SSB in time to hear BFDJ going demented.

Ps if you are a golfer you have just moved to golfing heaven ..if you are not .. your grandchildren will be :)

  15. I’m all for Henderson playing, he has plenty of dig in him and I don’t see him being overawed with the crowd.

I just watched the news, Greece about to do a Murray…does he freelance?

  16. Turkeybhoy-re henderson maybe young henderson will have played in games against Sevco juniors before -I’d trust him and the energy he has against the Sevco plodders Hh

I am indeed. To mention a “Sir Minty”phrase,I am jetting in for the game, then jetting back out again.I was”Jetting in”on the Friday, but a close friend has died here,so funereal on Friday.I am now “Jetting in”on the Saturday, spending time with my kids(Piss up),game on Sunday, then “Jetting back”that night.Wether the cabin staff will think me fit to fly is another thing.I will be “Jetting back”in May for the festivities,so I hope to meet some of the fine chaps then,to regale them of my”Jetting”exploits.

SFA climb down over Ashley hearing

    SFA

The SFA have caved into the demands of Mike Ashley and will stage tomorrow’s hearing into the Sports Direct chief’s growing control of Sevco by conference call.

Stupid headline from a Celtic Blog I quite like.To say the SFA are in a climbdown is ridiculous. Most of the worlds business is now done by conference calls.I myself have been involved in quite a few.To imagine MA and his legal team have nothing else to do but be at Hampden is ridiculous.I like this blog, but you dont have to make up things,to denigrate a ruling body, who have not ruled yet.Wait until the outcome.

Disciplinary type meetings / hearings aren’t conducted via conference call in any company, and if that was the case Neil Lennon would gave a large phone bill for his time as the Celtic Manager.

  23. Celtic ,will Beat Servco,

This game should never be taking place. The fact that it is; is an insult to fair play, good governance, the justice system, social welfare, history, our own ideals, the legal system, the written word, our personal legacies to our children.

Enjoy the game. It will be easy for you

He has plenty of time.I think he will be a star.I just dont think this game, with all the add ons is for him.Can get caught up in it all. These games,as has been said, sometimes fly by you.

A sub appearance by all means if we are well ahead. No need to rush the young man.I know Mulgrew is injured .Just using his name to outline the experience we need to combat this mob.Not too many been round the block. This game can catch up with you.

Not decrying the boy for one minute.
