Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

    On the fire bombing incident and sources/facts. Wee P67 rambled in that day about how online critics had created the conditions yada, yada and I said it could be safely ignored because the facts at that stage had not been established, but it had all the hallmarks of organised crime.

    I am told by a good pal of mine who works in the Glasgow press that the incident is indeed as described in this article and specifically related to Brown’s move to Aberdeen. The criminal figure allegedly involved is a well known boxing promoter.

    And no, I won’t be revealing my source even if you ask nicely. But I think we can both agree my judgement of the circumstances was more prescient than wee Paul’s.

    Like I say, these facts are damn useful things.

    I think we all know (well except for the Chaser / 6th Form Debating Champ) that there is a huge difference between nominal Catholic and practising Catholic.

    ———

    I take your point.

    There may well be, but were I a better practising Catholic, that wouldn’t be for me to judge.

    You can’t leave the Catholic Church, I think you can be excommunicated, but you can’t leave. As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, he’s a Catholic.

    *whenever anyone would say tae me “I used tae be a Catholic” my response would be along the lines “unless you wear the black mass vestments, and I don’t mean deidco or sevco tops, then you’re still a Catholic as you can’t unbaptise yourself”.

    I was a member of the RCIA for many years and whenever a prospective convert came along, usually female BTW as they had Catholic weans but the da’s has stopped going tae Mass, the first question we asked was were they ever Christened in another branch of the Christian Church.

    If the answer was yes then they were told they could proceed to the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation, no need for Baptism as they were already a member of the Christian Faith and you cannot be Baptised/Christened twice and that puts paid to the “born again Christians” out there..

    Not in cannon law. Once you’re in, you’re in. Seems even excommunication doesn’t work.

    As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, Boris Johnson is a member.

    Great song… that Delaney’s Dunky introduced me to a few weeks ago.

    Hope you are well.

    I’m a wee bit uncertain at the moment club wise.

    I don’t know the full story, but I’m suspicious about Big Yogi’s leaving.

    Also the stories I’m hearing about lack of respect for long serving players.

    Malky Mackay?

    I just did not know it was obligatory to deal with every word you wrote.

    As it happens, I can agree that Man City were a tougher seed than Benfica but Benfica WERE 2nd seeds and deserving of that status. It was an acievement to beat them. Brendan never came close to qualifying from a CL Group.

  11. SFTB,

    I know the internet is a rubbish mirror of real life but i must admit that this year makes me realise how different to some Celtic fans I am.

    To calling people a has been ( Broony), Fat leach ( Peter Lawwell), Clueless Jakey ( NL), Unemployable leach ( John Kennedy). To slagging Celtic on public sites (so the sevs can snigger). To not knowing there are half a dozen huns steering the agenda on the most-read Celtic site in the world.

    I am certain that the deal for Eddie Howe fell apart because the Hughes family (Richard?) seen people in George Square attacking policeman and photos of females soiling themselves and said fek that. Then someone tried to burn the CEOs house down.

    *I’m with you on all points here, although it does get shouted down a bit. I also read that Stubbsie, the Bear and Lambo think the job was too big for him, as the latter said even a draw is nae good for the support.

    My feeling about the George Square incidents might have gave him cause tae think it’s more than just a game north of the border plus the fraud said leading up tae his first treble he almost had a heart attack due tae the stress he was under and that was without sevco.

    Ronny D with 2 titles and an LC left due tae the stress tae. Don’t forget tae that WTT never managed again after us, in fact in our second last game at East End park where we could have clinched it he was like a rabbit stuck in the headlights on the touchline with the big Grim Reiper yelling at him tae get a sub on in case it all went breest up.

    It’s a tough gig no matter how you look at it.

  13. Tontine Tim,

    It Needs a very Hard Man Mentally to take Celtic forward in this cesspit.

  18. Moring troops hopefully get a confirmation via good sources soon that this aussie pub team manger is one big joke

    its a bit like saying an American soccer manger has won a few minor leagues and his stats are great lol

    we made a pigs arse of it yes , at present appoint mcintrye and mcmanus and search for a new boss and if find, then sign him

  19. Petec;

    If it’s an Ange/Harkin double act, our recruitment is likely to look like:

    A couple of Aussies to keep Ange company – Leckie (Hertha Berlin) and Jackson Irvine are out of contract so most likely;

    A few Man City players on loan – Arzani to replace Moi (who also happens to be from Oz); Palmer-Brown at centre half to replace Ajer; Nmecha to replace Eddie; Couto to replace Kenny;

    A few Man City u-23s who are Out of contract – the other Nmecha to replace Christie; Bernabe to replace CalMac; Pozo to replace Brown; Wilson-Ebrand to replace Laxalt; Odurah as right back cover;

    A handful of Scots players – Kerr; Ferguson; Nisbett; McCann.

    We’ll spend about £12-15m all in – basically the Eddie money – with other sales covering shortfall in season tickets and CL income.

  21. Howe/Ange is this year’s Toney/Ajeti – we go for an up and coming choice who will likely do well and bring in decent money when they move onward and upward, but make a pig’s ear of it. We then look at our 2018-19 scouting list for a guy who did well that year but has done sod all since, and cross our fingers that he’ll somehow perform like he did in 2018-19 when he arrives at Celtic…

    And why would I need to harness the data to know about it and its meaning? I get the public health data every day. Being the curious type I’m sure you can google the latest reporting on this, including a heat map that Indicates where current transmission rates are highest. These are in G41, G42 and to a lesser extent in G5.

    You may also have noticed a very public surge testing exercise in Pollokshields last week, where care staff and volunteers went door-to-door issuing PCR testing kits. The first of its kind in Scotland. That’s Pollokshields, not Bridgeton or Larkhall. Because that’s where the South Asian population is most concentrated.

    Also check out FM COVID briefings, national media reporting and NHS websites. It’s hardly a big secret.

    Happy research bud.

  23. SPIDEY101 was thinking exact same thing last night

    although in the case of Ange we hope that somehow we can imagine his leagues he was won here in oz 10-20 years ago are are same as la liga instead of reality of them being being like scottish 1st or championship level

    that’s why club should take a deep breath and learn from its mistakes and ask for new applications

    remember a new boss will not sign up to this 1 year rolling contract stuff , it will be 3 years he will want and you cant just hide a guy like this on the bench after 6 months when you realise he is just a pub team manger , you will have to pay him out when he is sacked

    I genuinely can’t follow your response on the fire bombing thing.

    I don’t doubt Lawwell is a victim of something terrifying and despicable. P67 rushed to judgement on it, without any knowledge. More than that, he sought to blame the wrong people. Without the facts to support it.

    I don’t know the facts for sure, but I was told (for the benefit of Ged who can’t count to 4) that the word is it’s a bad guy that did time for mortgage fraud and who shares a surname with a hero of ours named Yogi. Also told it is related to other firebombing in Bothwell and double fire bombing in Cleveden (first one was the neighbour by mistake, some poor financial adviser’s Bentley – so they went back the next night). Might all be pish, but the article you shared is at least consistent with it.

    I don’t like or rate Lawwell, but he has my unconditional sympathy for what he’s gone through here.
