Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

  1. sevco will be having a good titter at us thank you lawell and desmond what an embarassment

  2. Can we sign Ange on a pre contract, he can start work when he gets his badges in 3 years time.

  3. The Daily Record piece on the licensing story is hilariously bad.

“it’s unlikely that Postecoglou would be banned from taking over.

In 2016 Palermo appointed Guillermo Barros Schelotto as their new manager without him holding the necessary qualifications.

He was not granted an exemption by UEFA but sat on the bench anyway with Giovanni Tedesco named as ‘official’ head coach to get around the requirements.”

Great wee annecdote … apart from how horrific the visual of that would be (Kennedy as “manager” anyone?) its not even what happened.

They hired Schelotto in January, pulled their wee stunt when they realised he didn’t have the badges and then when UEFA refused to grant him an exemption they fired him a month later.

No crumbs of comfort in that story whatsoever.

  4. When I look at that!

First SFA badge for youth coaching is/was called “early touches”

Someone in the SFA has to change that Shirley

    Sounds perverse

  5. When the smsm start endorsing or encouraging anything Celtic F C do.

Be very worried, as there will be an ulterior motive.

  6. Paul67s memorable blog on Lawwell from a couple of weeks ago

”Over the years I have lost count of the number of times I asked Peter Lawwell to speak up and defend himself from ill-informed nutcases who thought him too exertive or not exertive enough. He continually refused, “What is best for Celtic?” was his repeated response. The real world is not as conspiratorial as many seem to think.

The man’s sheer intellect towered over Scottish football for 17 years. If you wanted to influence a neutral against Peter’s position, you needed your A game. Most went home to lick their wounds, many of them resentful. If you cannot outsmart him, blame his hidden hand, seems to be the excuse of choice.”

    ——

Lawwell’s ‘sheer intellect’ sees him sack Lennon in February and still without a manager going into June tomorrow.

    ——

‘ “What is best for Celtic?” was his repeated response.’

    —–

Just a few weeks away from champions league qualifiers, with no manager, no director of football, no chief scout, no backroom staff like sports science and virtually a whole new first 11 required with the possibility that the rumoured new manager doesn’t have the coaching qualifications required.

Peter Lawwell, you will never walk alone…over at Ibrox Park.

hi mate.you enquired about the use of the term Gerry McSherry.

Gerry was a resolute apologist for the (kelly/grant) board.a kinda of comical Ali of his day who could not see the precarious positition Celtic were in.i suspect whoever is attempting to slate you is poorly informed mate as well as wrong.

    :-)

  8. I’m not certain the title of the article is correct.

Surely, we’re looking at a Celtic pantomime. At best, Howe took up a few acts.

    We must own our incompetence.

I’d forgotten all about Gerry McSherry ha ha.

Is he related to ‘Laurie from Dennistoun’??

I think we should be told!!!

  10. The Ange-P from Oz appointment is off, according to JF on the Celtic Blog.

Reason being, he does not have the required license, to manage & coach a

European Club. & Our Club was stating that Ange-P, was quietly in the

of Managerial appointment process, for the past six months, what a load

of BS & Horseshit. It looks like we are going to be stuck with JK & GS,

for the foreseeable future, with JK only having a 40% win rate, & that’s

in domestic football, what a mare, & what a big cluster f*ck up, by our

incompetent & our disaster waiting to happen, PLC Board. A complete

shambles, from start to finish, by the incompetents, who could not

organise a piss up @ a brewery. Not only have we had to put up with

them, treating us all with contempt, over the course of last Season, (2020/21)

with a new song out called silence is deafening, instead of golden.

We now have them coming out with total pish, in their PR statement,

yeah like our performances on the playing field last Season. This is

in Ground-hog catastrophe mode, one c*ck up after another. 3 Months

waisted, in a so-called replacement managerial negotiations, that led to

a complete waist of effort & time, with the new Season just around the

corner, is a complete shambles, & in total melt down mode. They could

make a new disaster movie/film out of this, entitled how to destroy a

famous football Club, in less than 365 days.

I’m afraid old chaps on the PLC Board, you have all snatched failure,

from the jaws of being successful, by being totally incompetent, in the

organisation process, from top to bottom, a very serious problem, which

seriously needs to be addressed, asap. The Incompetents like to take the

plaudits/kudos, when things are going along smoothly, however when

things starts to go pear-shape, we are met with a wall of silence, & a

breakdown in communication, is that the way to run a professional

business? No. The incompetents have treated us all like mugs, & there

so-called wee sweeties offer, as regards to season card renewal subs,

is pathetic. A few Sevco season card holders who I have spoken with,

have informed myself that their season card prices are over 30%

cheaper, than what we are paying, yeah like 33 & a third cheaper.

The average price of a Season Card @ Ibrox, is £400+ for Adults.

While we are paying £600+ for the same privilege, who’s the mugs

here, & having to watch & witness pish in return.

Not only has our so called Club, treated us like mugs & with contempt,

they have also being ripping us all off as well, with their costs.

& also short changing us with their past transfer dealings, & managerial

dealings, bad appointments, trying to do everything on the cheap, while

keeping their main share holders, DD & Lindell-Nairn, A Equities London

Mob, sweet in shares return dividends, & the PL (CEO) taking over

£15,000,000 in Bonuses, not counting his wages over the past 18 years

is a recipe for disaster. The so called PLC Board should be ashamed of

themselves, & take one long look @ themselves, what one sows in life,

is also what one reaps, & no one can cover up ones Karma/Activity,

nor pull the wool over every-ones eyes all the time. Not everyone

suffers fools gladly, that is for sure.

I for one, will not be renewing into to a very badly organised Club,

that takes ones loyalty for granted, & treats us all like mugs & with

    contempt.

  11. AN TEARMANN on 31ST MAY 2021 10:14 AM

    They remind me of McSherry.

  12. squire danaher on

I was interested in the discussion about Rodgers v Strachan CL qualification.

A factor which has recently changed over the years which needs to be considered is that the CL title-holder, the EL title-holder and the champions of the 6 top-ranked associations are placed in Pot 1.

Next season this means that Lille and Sporting Lisbon are Pot 1 teams. They have coefficients of 14.000 (lower than Celtic) and 45.500 respectively.

This dumps teams with large coefficients, eg PSG, into Pot 2. Borussia Dortmund are the lowest ranked Pot 2 club for next season with a coefficient of 90.000.

By the same token, Celtic were usually on the cusp of Pot 3 with our coefficient generally in the high 30s-low 40s.

The bottom Pot 3 club next year is Zenit St. Petersburg with 50.000 and the top Pot 4 is Besiktas 49.000. Our coefficient is now 34.000.

As is well documented, this year we will have to win two rounds of qualifying for the right to face Benfica or Shakhtar Donetsk in a playoff to make the CL.

Purely for reference and by way of example, after two runs winning 4 rounds of qualifying and reaching the EL last 32/16, the other Glasgow club now have a coefficient of 31.250

  18. Maybe being a bit dumb here, but would you not need the license to manage at International level.I mean he took Oz to 2 WC finals, and won the Asian Cup.All without a license. You would think that would be required by FIFA.By the way just a couple of points from this, the Asian Cup,never won before by OZ,consists of teams like Japan,S. Korea. No mean feat. After qualifying for his second WC,he told the OZ, FA to sti ck it up their jacksie, because of interference. So no Yes man.

  20. AKBW1888:

    I didn’t say it was off :)

But it’s complicated. I’m told this is a mere “paperwork issue” but the Kevin Muscat precedent suggests that it’s a lot more difficult than some folk seem to believe.

Do NOT be surprised if there is a delay here, and a long one, whilst we wade through the bureaucratic train wreck that’s likely to ensue. And we don’t time have piss about on that.

People seem to think this is a matter of routine. Kevin Muscat had to wait for a window to apply for a UEFA Cerification. It took months. And he had to attend a three hour interview and then wait for the results of it. We can’t sit and wait whilst this sorts itself out.

I really genuinely think we have a big, big problem here. And although I am wholly opposed to this appointment I really think we’ve suffered enough humiliation as a club for one year and it will be horrific if this provides us with yet another one.

  21. Yeah Bamboo

That’s if they can sort out his license for coaching & managing Clubs around Europe

however the UK is no longer in Europe so that should not be a problem

  22. JF we are no longer in Europe, so that should no longer be the case as regards to coach licensing

  23. AKBW1888:

Our membership – or not – of the EU is NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.

But now you bring it up, there ARE work permit issues which may be problematic now.

However, the issue isn’t the EU it’s UEFA … which we ARE a member of, and their regulations will be what matter here.

  24. AKBW1888 on 31ST MAY 2021 11:04 AM

JF we are no longer in Europe, so that should no longer be the case as regards to coach licensing.

    ——————————————————————————————————————-

What do you mean? Of course, we’re in Europe.

More importantly, we’re a member of UEFA and these are UEFA criteria.

  25. JAMES FORREST on 31ST MAY 2021 11:04 AM

The work permit issues should be no different from what they were before Brexit. As far as I know, the rules for non-EU employees would remain the same.

  26. GEEBEE1978:

Oh I mean, I wholly expect him to clear the work permit hurdle in due course.

But … this licensing is deeply concerning. For the time this could all take, if nothing else. If we’ve hired this guy and then UEFA turns around and says “No the certificates aren’t recognised and here’s the process …” we’re screwed, to use the tame version of the word.
