Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

He didn’t. But he was already doing the Pro License, and just hadn’t completed it, which UEFA allows for.

One of the problems herei s that to do the Pro License you needs the A and B licenses as well … and it’s just not clear that he has those either. Even if he does, there’s only a certain number of window per year to get into a Pro License course and some of those in January and so he’s missed them … there’s a process for applying to get on one, which probably rules him out for the current intake …

I mean, if we’re relying on the SFA to make a case for recognition of his Asian federation badges, and we’re hoping for a quick turnaround on that I think that’s a bigger risk than the appointment. Kevin Muscat is the precedent, and the precedent is not good in this case.

Could we really hire this guy and make him Technical Director whilst we sort this out?

Who the Hell runs the team in the meantime?

(That’s obvious, and … not good.)

  2. Hearts got 120 applicants not so long ago, for their managerial vacancy.

& we are now scratching around, to find a suitable candidate, with one

big massive rebuilding process to arrange, which neads sorted asap.

The application point is interesting. I’m sure there’d be plenty of duds on there and I admit not all of them would be serious contenders but I’d be really curious to know what coaches would’ve applied for the Celtic vacancy and whether any of them would be better qualified than AP.

I brought up Gerry McSherry a few days ago on here in reference to the Lawwellites on this board.

    They remind me of McSherry.

Blind loyalty to people who will never criticise individuals even though the facts are out there.

    what is a lawellite?

    Are they Celtic fans?

Blind loyalty to what? – Celtic or Peter.

i would assume its Celtic and not Peter

fans just going to see there team.to see Celtic.

as they have done for generations.nothing more mate.its not a pro peter or anti- dissenter its simply bout going to see Celtic.

your questioning of decision may/may not be valid.

There is no comparison with the state of the club today and that of 1994.none.

AP should not be underestimated, that’s for sure, by we all know who.

  6. onenightinlisbon on

Maybe the board are well aware that they cannot appoint Ange – cue Roy Keane.

  7. AN TEARMANN on 31ST MAY 2021 11:21 AM

Great point about loyalty to Celtic or Lawwell.

When you see people backing Lawwell despite his lies about 5WA to shareholders and fans and not going to Uefa over trophies still being in old rangers name even though hundreds of matches should have been reinstated as 3-0 losses where Celtic were the main losers in said trophies.

So knowing that Lawwell was doing this, do Lawwellites have more loyalty to him or Celtic?

Like Paul67, who dropped res12 when the truth of his man Lawwell’s lies started to emerge.

  8. Another wee thought for the mix. It is/was rumoured that Feargal Harkin had a hand in recommending AP for the post (due to his City Group position and connections). IF that is the case and IF he eventually appears as our DoF would it not be a worry that he didn’t know about the Pro-Licence situation? I mean, a DIRECTOR of Football?

    Just a thought.

  9. PL is a liar & a money grabber, He signs players on the cheap, in other words he goes

for the cheapest option. He thinks that signing players is by chance/pot luck. In other

words, he does not believe in thorough research. He was moaning his head off, when

Rangers where out of the SPL, stating that our Club was losing 2.5 Million a Season.

He certainly does not want a Supporter/Fan Rep on the PLC Board. Yeah that’s to

hide all the cheating & short change, which is going down @ present.

& He wants our Club to keep using Parks of Hamilton Coaches, when you consider

their owner, is on the Board of our City Rivals, & Aberdeen even have their own

Crested Coach, so what does that tell you.

We as a Club, have only managed to qualify two (2) times out of nine (9) attempts,

to get into the CL Group Stage, that reads as very poor statistics indeed.

This has NOTHING to do with our ex membership of the EU.

  14. onenightinlisbon on

Lawwell facilitated the return of the club playing out of Ibrox. That alone should be enough for our support to be wary of him but yet we get a few who think the sun shines out of his sharp suited arse. A celtic man? Aye right…

Doesn’t help when the CEO signs players needed for the biggest matches of the season AFTER we are knocked out.

He even briefed Chris McLaughlin of the BBC against Rodgers the day before we played Athens in the CL.

The huns at their worst couldn’t have conspired more against us than that.

  16. I found it very VERY suspicious when just HOURS after the Howe deal collapsed, one media outlet published news we were at the latter stages of a deal with Postecoglou! Thereafter , within hours the rest of the media jumped on the bandwagon.

His agent is talking him up and we’re getting self promotion quotes.

Then celtic fans , ex players, pundits all start gossiping, panicking , speculating like teenagers

For me, dir of football first – then manager and I doubt it’ll be this guy!

Anyone subscribe to The Athletic? BBC gossip page has them saying that Howe didn’t come because the club’s hierarchy had no clear vision for the future.

Certainly sounds plausible and more likely to be accurate than the SMSM or the pro-Lowball Celtic sites, although you would have thought he would have picked up on that right from the beginning. It’s not like it’s kept well hidden!

  25. Allthough they cant get anything right for doing it all wrong, I doubt very much that a PLC board would not have a vision and a strategy going forward.

It is how the structure works, even if they dont pull it off, one year in 12.

I am often amazed that, even though you write it out explicitly people can take the exact opposite meaaning.

Here is what I wrote @ 10.28 in reply :-

“As it happens, I can agree that Man City were a tougher seed than Benfica but Benfica WERE 2nd seeds and deserving of that status. It was an acievement to beat them.”
