Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

If you thought it was bad just now, just imagine how bad it would be if you were on the board.

  2. Sun shining. Bank Holiday.

What better way to divest oneself of such unnecessary and undeserved contentment than to have a look at the CQN comments, read a blog or two from some guys who, looking back over the last year or two, have proven themselves no more itk about anything football related than the rest if us plebs.

I used to write an occasional piece for a now defunct Celtic Site. Back around the Strachan era. It was commentary on whatever was going on. Opinion. Veered on the supportive side not the critical. It was never any more than that and it never crossed my mind to start my own blog on the back of it. That takes a bit more than having an opinion and being able to articulate it in writing – in my opinion.

Too much of what we get online – podcasts and written – adds little value to the discourse.

Others may love it, but isn’t it all about opinion anyway?

Back to the sun and the peace of mind…..

This blog is now run by hunterlopers and anti Peter Lawells and they all tend to agree with each other, the rest of us are clueless. They are that smart that DD should offer them positions on the board.

they would turn it down, too busy running their won companies,

iI takes 2 to Tango, OK we messed it up sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for Eddie to make up his mind, but then again what kind of bloke would do that – knowing the situation we are in at the moment, keep us hanging on for months and months then say no thanks – and by the way its not my fault! You have to question if thats the sort of man we want in charge of Celtic. We will never know but he could have accepted the job then fell flat on his face suddenly realising he was way way out of his depth.

As could whoever comes – the sooner we find out the better.

  5. SAINT STIVS on 31ST MAY 2021 5:54 PM

If Lawwell stuck to the things he could do and what he done in Clydeport he would be ok.

But his interfering in everything else has cost us and now you see the results.

He picked Lennons assistants, signed players Rodgers didn’t want, etc, the list is endless.

And what he done or didn’t do or covered up with regards to RES12,5WA and results of hundreds of matches with players not registered to play is indefensible.

  6. Robert as a ps to your blog and podcast comment, As Celtic state of Mind has expanded, I have found it kinda boring and repetative now, however what still hits the mark is the home bhoys Jason Higgins big brother of John is a rare teir, but with such a brain with great insights to Bilbao, Everton, Celtic, the Spanidsh civil war, and all loads of things.

Catholic in taste, in the uniiversal meaning of the word.

Their interview with Brian McClair was quite excellent. If you can get past Choccy droll delivery he is one sharp witted man, after his scotland gig i was suprised he didnt come to celtic park in some sort of youth development role.

  7. On Lennons appointment second time.

If you were a top manager, would you have wanted to work for a CEO who picked your backroom staff and signed players you didn’t want?

  8. Rolling Stone

“To not recognise the difference between Benfica as a club against City/PSG as a club is just obdurate.”

    ———————————-

Thank God then that twice I have articulated that I do see them as both different and better, as a club.

But some would seem to want o box me in to an opinion I never expressed.

Maybe WGS and Neil would not have won the CL Group that Brendan faced and maybe Brendan would have won their CL groups. But the reverse is also true and all of it is speculation and “What ifs” with absolutely no metrics but our prejudices to guide us.

Meanwhile, in the real world, WGS, twice, and Neil, once, did actually qualify from a CL Group.

Brendan, in 3 attempts did not.

    Them’s the actual facts.

Well them’s and the additional fact that benfica were a very good CL team too and were playing full strength.

BTW I celebrated all those results – the draws that BR got and the wins that WGS and NFL got because they were all won against the odds.

  9. Surely people dont think we asked Howe weeks ago and he said ‘Yes but I want the backroom staff with me.’ So Celtic then said, ok let us know ?.

Surely he spoke to them first ?.

    Naw ?

  10. Neil Lennon, I guess, because who could possibly really know, but I will guess, he was happy to be at Celtic Park in any capacity. Having just delivered a league and a cup, he possibly felt it was a high point in management, and he couldnt tunr it down under any circumstance.

I would have done the same.

I am amazed that so much stock is put on these modern managers cant perform unless they have their own guys in place. A lot of nonsense.

ma granny says your old enough to remember when celtic won the league

    aye a im.

    whit went wrong

well teirney, it got too hard to be a celtic manager, one guy won the league two years in a row, and a league cup and they chased him cos the “fitba wisnae nice”

then the next guy had to win trebles, which he did but they decided his european games were the benchmark, so he ran away.

then the next next guy, who had won them leagues before stepped in, and everybody wanted him to win trebles, which he did, then he had a bad 6 months and they chased him …………

well and the rest is history, as they say.

  14. SAINT STIVS on 31ST MAY 2021 6:16 PM

No offence, but you are completely out of touch with how the modern world works in football.

If top managers thought it made no difference with who the backroom staff were then they wouldn’t put their own people in place.

I’d rather that football people made that decision than accountant, like what happened with Celtic.

I am not actually, I spent a lot of time studying the Director of Football structure at the top clubs, and although there was not a one size fits all organisation , often the structure and staff all stay the same other than a head coach coming in.

The director of football appoints the head coach.

He accepts the structures in place,

Genuine question, or two. Are you of the opinion that any incoming coach MUST accept Kennedy and Strachan? If so, why did we wait so long for Howe’s decision?

  19. SAINT STIVS on 31ST MAY 2021 6:55 PM

Do you know if any of the clubs you studied have an accountant selecting the players to buy, rather than the manager?

  20. I suppose when your club is only 9 years old, you cant trumpet about the ball on the hedge or same old alloa always cheatin.

They have Recruitment committees, I am absolutely certain there will be some sort of financial analytics goes on, you know the famed Moneyball approach, I dont think PL got to chose exclusively by watching the videos himself and taking his pick.

    Who recruited Moussa ?

Imagine losing a league by 25 points to a team only formed in 2012.

Surely some mismanagement of our resources at play there?

Or maybe the custodians are happy to have their old rivals back in a new coat.

No, the incoming coach does not need to accept them, that is infered by waiting so long on Howe convincing them.

i do believe , a swell of opinions loudly trumpeted “we want howe” and the board for once tried to do that thing.

He is no Brendan Rodgers, sure he is a modern coach, but if he had managed at Liverpool or similar, I would understand the attraction, but he didnt, lets see where he goes next.
