Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

Allthough they cant get anything right for doing it all wrong, I doubt very much that a PLC board would not have a vision and a strategy going forward.

It is how the structure works, even if they dont pull it off, one year in 12.

    Like your sarcasm.

I’m not joking , akbw , I enjoy watching it – celt’s goal against motherwell in the last match I saw was amazing. I just wish they would reduce the pitch size and goal size. The vision and quality is there but the ‘how far can I wellie it limit’ doesn’t help. You don’t get cnuts like lungeatme and naiscum.

So we are waiting on news of a (second) manager who may or may not be coming to us , apparently recommended by a DOF who may or may not be coming to us . Bizarre .

So should Lawwell have sacked BR for failing in europe ?

The only manager who got us into CL in near enough the last 10 years?

    Hahaha!

Fair play Adi for the gag, suppose after the latest Lawwell fiasco we could do with some humour.

I kinda miss Job Baldie’s morning weather report.

Now the weather report from the Garngad :) is the definitive source of truth.

But East Kilbride, with its own micro climate, merited JB’s update.

  10. Rumour doing the rounds that publicans in Glasgow have asked Sturgeon to relax lockdown rules for one day only, the day Lawwell leaves Celtic, in order to accommodate massive demand for Celtic fans looking to celebrate.

    Panty wetters?

Are you aware of the following

    1. We failed miserably with our quest for ten.

    2. Deidco won the league at a canter.

    3. We have not had a manager since the 24th February.

    4. We failed to appoint our number one managerial target.

    5. We are scrambling about looking for anyone available to take the biggest job a manager has faced at Celtic in years.

    6. The board has no relationship with the fanbase as a whole.

I could go on but accusing folk of being pantywetters…..

  15. In other news today:

“RANGERS have lost the latest round of a long-running legal battle with businessman Mike Ashley.

The Ibrox club have been told by a court they can’t sue to get £2.4million they say they are owed under a deal with rival sports firm LBJ Sports Apparel and Hummel.”

  16. There are at least a thousand managers / head coaches out there who could do a job for us next season — totally energise the squad and improve the performance levels to competitive standards.

There are 500 managers / head coaches out there who would win us the league with competent MIB.

Norway / Sweden / Austria / Portugal / Central Europe / Benelux — place is “hoaching” with coaching talent.

All in our price range / all who could take us to the next level after the NL slow motion train-wreck and the JK rabbit in the headlamps performance.

AP will do a job for us next season if he turns up — but so could 999 other candidates as well.

The main thing is to let him get on with the job in hand.

The all to apparent failure is to let PL — useless / 2nd rate / low rent property bean counter that he is — be the back seat driver.

    That way failure beckons.

    KA @ £6mill / £8mill / £10mill — our failure in one number.

T/O decline over 17 years is our failure in another.

And yet still they clap — PL the business wonder brain my erse.

At least we now know who his fan club are.

Eddie Howe and or his team – doing a U turn

The incident at PLs house and the riots on the streets of Glasgow when we should be housebound could be part of the reason the Howe team did a U turn

Those incidents will have done nothing to sell Glasgow to anyone

Bournemouth is a retirement town very well kept gardens and lots of sunshine

I have always said that any player of manager we look to attract has to be sold Glasgow as well as Celtic

In a football sense you need a bit of character to survive in Glasgow

The 2 incidents mentioned above are enough to make anyone think twice

Throw in, the lack of money, an uphill battle to get into the CL and getting kicked all over the place on a freezing night on crap pitches in towns like Perth Aberdeen Paisley Inverness etc

I always criticized PL for hiring NL in the showers at Hampden

But how many times has PL and DD held talks with the great and the good in the football world to be turned down – with NL they at least knew he would come

Reality is we are not a good fit for a top proven manager

We are a platform for an up and coming, ambitious, unknown

Look at how lucky the Huns got with slippy – pure luck – the guy had never managed a football team

Our task is daunting – the Greek/Aussie does nothing for me (my ignorance not his potential) but our options are not as great as we would like

If he would come – I would wait till after the Euros and get Steve Clarke

Is he the best Manager for Celtic – probably not

Is he the best Manager for Celtic that living in Glasgow is not a problem – probably

our media have gone full blown ‘build em up knock em down’ mode now…

CELTIC’s approach to make Ange Postecoglou the new manager of the Parkhead club has hit a serious stumbling block, according to many reports…

theres a surprise – its the sheer glee in their reporting that gets to me, they really dont like us do they.

  23. Rock Tree Bhoy on

There’s an infatuation on here with Peter Lawwell thats really unhealthy, falling out with each other over a guy that’s leaving us any day now, forget Peter Lawwell, we still haven’t got a manager, and the press are out to hammer us into the ground, these are far more important issues.

Frankly, I couldn’t care less about Peter Lawwell, he’s already ancient history.

  24. Been a while since Paul didn’t post on a Monday………

Although I have said I would prefer a more local choice Postecoglou sounds like a larger than life character who has won titles as a player and as a manager and has been the manager of his national team. The kind of guy who eats, sleeps and dreams football. What he would need though is someone like the late great Neilly Mochan to keep the players fit. The Celtic trainer needs to have a much greater importance.

Spot on. Like comparing apples and fish! Also, pre-Lowball, post-Xmas meant last 8, now it’s last 16 (or 32 in EL) and we are still failing. Since our last knockout win in 2004 we have only won one single leg – against Zenit under BR. But hey – we have beaten Hamilton a fair few times!

There’s an infatuation on here with Peter Lawwell thats really unhealthy, falling out with each other over a guy that’s leaving us any day now,….

    ——-

I think that’s part of the issue.

It’s long been mooted that Mr Lawwell has aspirations to go on to UEFA having been a blazer at the SFA.

As I understand it, he can only hold office within UEFA or any other football-related body if he is an office bearer within a club.

I think a scenario more likely than his complete departure will him holding some ceremonial position at Celtic Park.

Which will allow Mr McKay to “enjoy the opportunity to benefit from the experience of the former CEO”.

  27. I read claims that the prospective candidate hasn’t got some UEFA coaching qualification. Andy Roxburgh has got 27 at the last count. When Zidane first got the Real Madrid job I remember one coach complaining he wasn’t qualified. He didn’t do too badly. Football is not that hard to work out and he’s been doing it all his life. The stagnant SFA will love to get their teeth into this one. Farrygate 2.0

Who promised the Requisitioners he would take on the fight on if the smoking gun was found ?

Who have conspired through their Operation Short Head nonsense to keep the Blue Pound in the game and charge people £49 to see the new club??

  29. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 31ST MAY 2021 1:16 PM

Right. So if you agree City are far better than Benfica, I’m not sure how one achievement can be greater if we’re not comparing like for like. Rodgers was at a disadvantage to his predecessors when you look at the groups he had to face.

  30. For people blaming what happened at Lawwell’s house and the George Square riots as reasons for not getting Howe or any other good manager or players.

I imagine if sevco get to the CL groups they will attempt to buy big in the transfer market as they don’t seem to bother with carrying huge debt or debt for equity swaps.

I’d hate to see them bring in a top player or two, and now know that it definitely won’t happen due to the riots and Lawwell incident, which will scare players off.

Of course i’m being sarcastic simply because Lawwellites will use any excuse for the Howe shambles, rather than owning up to how badly the club is run.
