Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

    A FIVER FOR YOUR THOUGHTS

Apart from the finically duped 90’s ,Celtic have been the dominant team in Scotland for 50 plus years. Probably most of our lifetimes.

We will loose the odd cup, even loose the odd league but if you know the history, we will be back.

For me, its one of life’s great privileges to be a Celtic supporter, given me enormous pleasure and memories to last a lifetime .

The Captain Hindsights telling us we are all doomed and they knew it long before anyone else are best not to be taken too seriously. Their arguments are knee jerk emotional, not based on facts.

    ………………………….

Absolute bullshit. Perhaps if those of us who opposed Neil Lennon’s appointment in the showers had been listened to then we wouldn’t have had such a disastrous season. We pointed out that he was not up to scratch after Cluj, after Copenhagen, on 29 December 2019, after Ferencvaros, after losing 2-0 to Sevco where we didn’t have a single shot on goal, after Sparta Prague humped is twice. However, just keep on taking the happy pills and pretending that everything’s all right.

Yes, our arguments are ‘Knee jerk, emotional, not based on facts’. God give me strength.

The board couldn’t have picked a better season for failing to address the calamities they allowed to happen ….

No fans in the ground to voice their concerns got them off the hook big time …imo.

They have a chance to get it right , i just hope they take it .

  11. The straw man arguments some are putting up so that they don’t have to properly defend this board and its scandalous mismanagement are absolutely dire.

Some want to make keep making idiotic jokes that weren’t the first hundred times.

Others want to go at the bloggers, for doing our jobs.

Some want to talk about all our yesterdays as if that somehow will distract us from the mess right now.

Others want to make it personal against fellow Celtic fans.

And a handful are just in total full flight from reality.

It’s as if it hasn’t sunk in that we’re about to appoint a guy who’s record hasn’t gotten him an offer from a top flight European club in 25 years. if he gets a licence.

We’re floundering here … and these guys want a game of water polo.

SS-I think that was done.People will always speculate. But I haven’t read anything anywhere that doesn’t think this was a terrible thing.Have you 🤷🏽‍♂️

  15. James,

I post what I post not to distract from the seriousness of where we find ourselves, but because Celtic encompasses for me, more than the hysterical moments of the roller coaster days on a blog.

I will call out the terminally gloom stricken Private Frasers because they do not reflect my feelings on the here and now. Things are bad, we get that, things could have been dont better, ditto, but the often childish arguments about who should have done what are tedious. They change nothing.

An inflection point for me, was the personal insults to Neil Lennon, it was disgusting, it moved on to several players, they got attacked at Celtic Park, a low point in the supporters history, if any of my family members had been involved in that I would have disowned them.

At the lowest points in 93/94 I do not recall any violence towards celtic staff, even the worst of the board members, they got a sherricking sure, but their homes were not publish in the press, or highlighted in the fanzines. But somehow that is ok on the internet of today.

That continues on the blog, people hide behind anonymous names, insult and attack Celtic staff, comment on their personal lives, it has moved beyond football performance and disappointment about results, it is now more sinister than that.

Anyways I am away to get my horse for the water polo.

  16. Every single one of us loves this club. No exceptions. I don’t even think there are many hunterlopers on here as people reckon there are, and if there are then they are the saddest of sad bastards becasue their team has just won the league, it’s a beautiful night out there, most of the country is coming out of Covid restrictions and if they have nothing better to do that’s just tragic.

This is the real tragedy of what’s happened these past few days; whatever you thought of Eddie Howe, that was a unifying candidate who would have brought this club and support back together again.

And look at us. This is it now. This appointment has split the support more than ever. For that reason alone it’s a shocker and unbelieavble. I know at some point I’m going have to get behind this, but I won’t do it until then and then reluctantly, and angry, and I expect to watch an absolute car-crash.

I was furious about Lennon being appointed; everyone knows that.

This time? Scared shitless. No joke. For the first time in a long time I’m seriously, seriously scared.

And I don’t want to come on here and fight with anybody feeling this way because I have a bad notion that we’re all gonna need to lean on each other in the next 12 months.

  17. ADI_DASSLER NOT FOR 2ND BEST on 31ST MAY 2021 6:15 PM

Surely people dont think we asked Howe weeks ago and he said ‘Yes but I want the backroom staff with me.’ So Celtic then said, ok let us know ?.

Surely he spoke to them first ?.

    Naw ?

    ————

Why is this so difficult to understand?

Howe is the preferred candidate – he wants to come, but understandably wants his backroom staff with him.

Bournemouth are involved in Premiership play-offs. Eddie Howe is duty-bound not to contact his backroom staff and because he is an honourable man with years of work & good relations with the club, he sticks by that, but tells Celtic that he can deliver the whole package when the play-offs are over.

Then arson happens at Peter Lawwell’s house – the house of the most important figure at Celtic for nearly two decades. This together with the rioting right in the centre of Glasgow causes the backroom staff and their families to think again. I will translate for some of the deniers on here “what the f*** is going on in Scotland”.

Call to Eddie “sorry Eddie there is no way we are heading up there”

Eddie tells Celtic that he cannot come without his own people.

Celtic issue statement that the deal is off due to circumstances not in their, or, Eddie Howe’s control.

This will all be confirmed in due course – it is in Celtic’s and Howe’s interest that it is. Timing will be once the new manager is in place.

  18. Hello Neil, its Eddie

I am doing my due diligence, thought I would give you a call,

    Ok, shoot,

so what does it take to be a great celtic manager, what do i need to do.

Em, make the players better, have them play football in a certain way, beat everybody with loads of goals, never get beat in scotland, win all the trophies with no exceptions, be in the Champions league after christmas, only buy players that we can sell for massive profits, while bringing 3 players a year from the youth set up then selling them for massive profits, call out the hun referees, call out the cheating, call out the press, .

ok neil thanks, i have heard enough

zoom call – aye lads, i knew it was a rubbish job, we are staying in england.

I think Lennon would be the last person he spoke to.

Common practice in Management circles. Ask the guy who did the job last what is going on.

You would be suprised at how many Managers rate Neil Francis Lennon.
