Improvements clear two weeks on from home Astra game

2373

It’s a bit frustrating being so close to qualification for the knock out stages last night before a momentary lapse cost us late in the game, but there were plenty of positives.  60 minutes into last month’s game at Celtic Park against Astra, taking four points from them looked very ambitious.  We played considerably better last night in the corresponding home game, or in the home game against Dinamo Zagreb.

Celtic are functioning better in midfield, while defensively they’re also looking solid.  We acknowledged some weeks ago that without Guidetti or Commons we would struggle to create and execute chances, and so it proved.

With Anthony Stokes also out the picture, Leigh Griffiths got the nod to replace Stefan Scepovic and instantly brought some drive to the forward line.  He was unfortunate that his ‘goal’ was disallowed for a debatable infringement, but he just brings the kind of purpose inside the box that we didn’t have until his arrival.

We’re now four games unbeaten in this competition, and we’re improving.  The evidence suggests that Salzburg have also improved since we took a point from them on match day one.  Last night’s result in Zagreb was impressive, but Salzburg will face their stiffest test of the group at Celtic Park.

Still fancy our chances of winning the group.

  1. Don’t know what Chris Sutton said.

Don’t buy the Record or any paper for that matter and have no desire to read back and see what he has said.

Let me guess though , another dig at RD.?

Sutton was a hero of mine , a fabulous Celtic player who along with his team mates and Martin gave me some of my best moments following Celtic.

That he now has digs at our manager is sad.

Another fifth columnist in a sadly growing list of past heroes who are happy to stick the boot in.

    What could be his motivation?

    Money? Probably.

Loyalty to his old pal Neil? Possibly

A desire to de-stabilise our club? Doubt it.

I suppose looking at it Chris retains a deep fondness for Celtic and wants the best for us. I am sure that is the case.

Just so sad that Chris, Charlie Nic and others express these concerns in the format they do.

I guess x Rangers players can’t be critical of Sevco and Super Sally as they never played for Sevco.

    As for today…..

McInness is a total fud and his team will be on the end of a helluva skelping.

    In RD I trust

  8. 67 heaven I agree. But year by year the poppy appeal gets hijacked for an agenda I really don’t like. I used to go out of my way to get a poppy. Now I’d don’t bother.

I listened to a call last night on Clyde where the caller said he was moved by the ceremony at hearts yesterday but of course the main reason for his call was to say he hoped the celtic supporters don’t let themselves down today. Then keevins went on the say the same.

this has now become an annual baiting event to try and attack the celtic support. Differences in opinion are not allowed. Facism rules.

Poppy day is way way passed its sell by date.

UK is obsessed with war ,old wars and even older wars and new (illegal ) wars.

Its a blatant attempt to brainwash a fresh generations of recruits for warmongering Westminster’s next adventure.

    ==

Correct, not sure why the UK are so hung up about individuals having to wear a paper flower. The only time I object to it is when it is forced on individuals – IE TV everyone has to wear one or when football clubs chose to force it on their supporters and their mainly foreign players.

  12. Was it Mother Theresa of Calcutta who said, “War is the mothers of the world crying for their dead children.” Perhaps we should remember them today.

  13. York Minster has a book which has a record of all the deaths of all the soldiers (and nurses) who died in WW 1from the York area. I had to photograph the book and I saw the pictures of soldiers 17, 18 years old who were mown down before they had a chance to live. I saw pictures of 2 and 3 members of the same family who went to France and never came back. I will give a minutes silence for them.

Think i also remember people who were at the game were amazed it could be heard on tv because only couple of dozen singing on way in.

And im nearly sure alot of celtic fans sing when entering any stadium.

  16. Frank Ryan's Whiskey on

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,

Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,

Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs

And towards our distant rest began to trudge.

Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots

    But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;

Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots

Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas!Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,

    Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;

But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,

    And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime . . .

Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,

As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,

He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace

Behind the wagon that we flung him in,

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,

    His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent(14) for some desperate glory,

The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est

    Pro patria mori.

    Poppy Debate

I have a little metal one, been wearing it on my jacket when at work

I have respect for those who went to war – most on here have never had that prospect to deal with – not sure how brave I am or how I would have dealt with the fear

So I chose to wear a Poppy out of respect for people like you and me who just happened to be born a generation or two before us

But I will admit that I also wear it because I believe it is compatible with the morals of being a Celtic supporter – equality, no bigotry, compassion, forgiveness – all the things Celtic and a large proportion of its supporters live by

I am NOT saying that if you don,t wear a Poppy you are not any of the above – but I do like advertising my beloved club as one with better morals

Your choice just don’t judge those that do or those that don’t

  19. Turkeybhoy,

My Dad was one who was in the Far East during WW 11. Just about every Catholic in Parkhead, including the most outspokenly Republican, were conscripted. Hardly a one had a job in the reserved occupations in the Forge. On their return, they made up the bulk of the support in what came to be known as the Jungle. Prior to that, it was always the Hayshed, due to its resemblance to a barn.

  20. Good morning CQN. On the road between Kemnay and Aberdeen. Dry and sunny and I’d say fresh, rather than cold. Good day for a game of football.

Had a few wee goldies last night and have a bit of a drouth. A nice pint will go down very well once we’re parked up.

We have a Dons supporter with us. He was in the pub last night and my son offered him a lift to Pittodrie. Nice guy, especially since he absolutely insists on buying us a beer when we get to the game.

Have bet 2-1 Celtic and Virgil for first goal, for no other reason than he is due a goal.

I’ll be delighted with any victory, even an offside penalty in the 94th minute that is deflected in by a seagull.

  23. Tricoloured Ribbon on

I have no problem with anyone wearing a poppy.

Remembrance Sunday should be a private issue for those who wish to go to a cemetery or a cenotaph.Privately.

It should not be a jamboree of armed forces marching onto a football pitch with flags and wreaths and the farcical sight of football players being FORCED to wear a poppy on their strips whether they like it or not.
