Instant gratification and the road ahead

607

Instant gratification is no good for people, it gives our brains the wrong signals, but still, when it comes……….  Within 4 minutes of making his Celtic debut Daizen Maeda opened the scoring against Hibernian.  It was his first chance, his first proper involvement in play and pivoted the game away from Hibs, who should have already been ahead after Joe Hart and Josip Juranovic pondered in their six-yard box.

Such was the anticipation ahead of last night’s game that for some of us it brought back memories of Jorge Cadete’s debut against Aberdeen (delayed by maleficence at the SFA), or Paulo Di Canio’s against Kilmarnock the same year.  Maeda’s impact was every bit as clinical.  His 90 minutes was reminiscent of Kyogo; constant movement, gyroscopic balance, few touches and an outcome-determining performance.

If Maeda had a dream debut, Reo Hatate’s reached fantasy levels.  When we first heard of Reo he was operating as a left back, with the cursed title of a utility player.  The transformation he brought to Celtic’s play had to be seen to be believed.  His role was to create and then utilise space, the former achieved by perpetual movement, the latter by ranging passes that switched play and swiftly pushed Celtic forward.

As a consequence, it all looked too easy for Celtic.  They had options everywhere, a teammate in space, a forward pass tempting them into attack.  Hatate’s movement impacted what happened everywhere on the field.  It was a kind of omnipresence, even when he was 40 yards away (the limit of his distance from play), he was still consequential.

With so many playing their first game in over a month, the relenting pace of the first half could not continue.  Celtic reduced their pressing after the break and saw the game out.  With five substitutes available, it was curious that Ange Postecoglou waited until 74 minutes before brining on Yosuke Ideguchi, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Mikey Johnston.

Our third and final debutant of the night had a lot to live up to.  Yosuke adopted the No. 6 role at the back of the midfield, with Callum McGregor moving one place ahead for the remainder of the game.  He did enough to show comfort and competence on the ball, as Celtic subverted Hibernian hopes.

As I said above, instant gratification misleads our brains.  My brain has already extrapolated last night’s performance across the remainder of the season.  Let’s agree that at the very least, Celtic have embarked on an exciting road.

    ………….

Sorry mate but you have lost me as I dont know the ” Y” Word that you refer to ?

As for solicitors serving a Writ on Celtic supporters for singing Reb songs…would anyone singing the French National Anthem be also served a Writ ?

How many Writs would need to be served on Hun fans ?

    —–

Your points are well made and encapsulate the situation perfectly. There is nothing for me to add, other than, my support.

  4. Big Jimmy,

We have both made our points in a clear manner so I’ll leave it there.

    On the writ front…

Arsenal supporters taunt Spurs supporters about their Jewish roots/support.

The Lawyer in question was an Emirates season ticket holder, his point was he as a paying customer should be able to come and watch a football match without being subjected to racist chanting and songs.

His was a point in law.

There would be no point of law with the French National Anthem that I could see.

As far as the Rangers fans go, I’d think a Rangers season ticket holder could well have a case in that respect. As far as I’m concerned they are even worse than the GB.

    Hail Hail

  5. Nae bother mate, but I REFUSE to be a Hypocrite by slagging of the GB Song Book and/or the same Song Book of many other Celtic supporters in Pubs/Parties or in the street etc.

I know that Spurs have been chanted/sung about because of their Jewish connections, but I am still in the dark about the word beginning with ” Y” ?

    No matter.

Be wary of Tory Chumps named ” JHB” agreeing with you.

    HH.

  6. I’m with Big Jimmy.

I refuse to be a hypocrite and condemn those who do what I did and what I still do in certain circumstances.

  7. JHB @ 4:45 PM,

Well you didn’t support my excellent contribution about the self-determination of the Scottish people;))

    MPSHANKS @ 4:57 PM,

Well, look, Big Jimmy is well respected by the ghuys on here that have met him and I can see why.

And I think many a Rangers fan would agree with you, that the fact I sing some songs at a Wolfetones’ gig in Luton Irish Club that I wouldn’t sing at a match at Celtic Park makes me a hypocrite.

Yet the fact is, that’s West of Scotland culture and I can put both events in context.

Do you think it’s OK for Rangers supporters to sing Sectarian songs in Ibrox?

    Hail Hail

  8. BIG JIMMY @ 4:54 PM,

No worries big man – hope you manage to get out and have a beer soon.

    Hail Hail

Just watched that interview. Woof ……ripped to shreds. The most excruciating interview I’ve seen since Randy Andy Pandy was given a similar pasting by that clever BBC girl.

  10. Just because we used to sing the songs does not give carte blanche today.

    What has changed. Answer: Time.

Like many things, what was acceptable years ago is no longer acceptable.

In 2022, criteria of acceptability has changed.

Collectively as a club and a support we must embrace change, or make no mistake it will be forced on us.

There is no ” old firm” we emphatically state, yet a section of our support endorse the view of many onlookers that we are just the opposite side of the hun coin.

Eventually time will catch up on the dinosaurs. They will have to ship up or shape out.

    HH.

  11. Talking of drinking cultures at work. One of my first jobs after graduation was with a large US based computer hardware company, the guys there went to the pub pretty much every lunchtime and always every Friday. One guy in particular could put away 4 or 5 halfs and a half lager in about 40m. He would go back to the office and find a quiet spot to sleep. Company had a great reputation and money was good but I hated it and lasted less than a year!!

  12. I don’t sing sectarian songs. I sing songs of Irish Freedom. I don’t do any of the add ons.

Is Flower of Scotland sectarian? It’s a rebel song, no doubt. But not sectarian as I see it or understand it. Nor is BOTOB and most (all?) songs of the War of Independence.

For avoidance of doubt. Sectarian Songs referencing being up your knows on blood of another “tribe”, “community”or “faith” are not acceptable.

  13. The preformance yesterday wa very good, but it was clear we dropped off second one half in a tactical change. Not the worst thing in my opinion.

I dont sign rebal songs at the football but could not care less about the rebal songs at celtic park just as I have no problem with legit protests against those that would abuse human right. The establishment are forever trying to censor the masses. Using sports events etc to raise social awareness is a powerful tool that has been used for many a year.

I do not like any songs of hate or sectarian songs. Blows my mind that some folk still don’t recognise the difference between the two. Rabal songs are not sectarian, being a nationalist or republican is not determined by religion or race it is a legitimate political worldview.

The flower of Scotland is about rebellion against the english, not sure what that has to do with scorland vs Wales, France Germany etc but no complaints when its sung at football etc.

  14. The drink culture that was accepted in the shipyards, construction sites etc has long gone.

    It’s a different ball game.

  16. Tom McLaughlin on

I had a visitor from Liverpool – a Toffee – at Celtic Park last night, so I wasn’t in my usual seat. He was very impressed with the atmosphere and the football on show. What was not at all impressive was the restricted view. We were seated at the edge of the Jock Stein stand next to the South Stand and our view of an area between the penalty spot and the 18 yard line was obscured by the huge pillar holding up the roof of the South Stand.

It is ridiculous that a club of Celtic’s stature has allowed this state of affairs to continue for more than 50 years. Why spend tens of millions rebuilding the stadium and leave it only three-quarters completed? The club needs to finish the job by flattening the stand and rebuilding it to the scale of the rest of the stadium.

What is more, the facilities under/behind the South Stand are a disgrace, with lack of space and appalling catering. Parts of the structure are falling apart with age and lack of maintenance.

Aerial views of the stadium look dreadful as it just looks so lop-sided and clumsy. An utter embarrassment for me last night, and what an impression it must leave with opposition supporters who face the same problem at the other end of the stand.

    Get it sorted Celtic.

  17. CHAIRBHOY @ 5:06

It is always about content with me, not personalities, as simple as that. Just because I have a different view to someone on a particular issue, doesn’t mean I oppose on every issue.

With regard to self-determination – the 2014 Referendum was the perfect example of such. The democratic will of the population expressed in that plebisite must be respected – the result was decisive. My view is that if, and it is a big if, there is a second referendum, the result will be even more in favour of NO THANKS!

We have the most powerful devolved parliament in the world, together with the support of the UK economy. The last two years illustrate how important that support is to Scotland.

We could/should be concentrating on developing home-grown solutions to home-grown problems instead of constitutional navel-gazing and grievance-mongering.

I have never had any problem being distinctly Scottish within the UK.
