Inter will know they’ve been in a game

865

Someone asked me a few weeks ago if this was a must-win game.  Clearly it’s not, the cup games are must-win, as is the coming league game against Aberdeen, but tomorrow night is an important weathervane, indicating if the club is on the road to recovery.

Since that great high against Barcelona, we have faced Italian opposition twice, both in 2013, losing home games 0-3 to Juventus and Milan.  You can trace the decline in European performances through a subsequent Champions League group stage which concluded with five defeats, and last summer’s abject qualification campaign.

Indications are we are a better team now than we were in August, or even when qualifying from our Europa League group, but there is still an almighty task ahead tomorrow night.  I suspect none of this recent history will affect Ronny and his players.  The manager has told the players they can win.  Most of them are playing like they have a point to prove, all of them are looking forward to the challenge.

Inter will know they’ve been in a game.

Feynoord have been the only team to visited Basel in the last 15 years that caused the English Football Pub to close on match day, riot police called and pedestrians terrified, not a nice bunch….

  5. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Delaney’s, enjoy your half day and your pre match swallay.

Further to your posts last night about James Forrest. The old guy who sits next to me is close to having a heart attack if Forrest starts a game. He can’t stand James. He even managed to criticise him after James scored the winner against Karagandy.

    Enjoy yourself tonight.

Your posts above put a smile in my heart and the start of a wee tear in my eye.

Delaney’s – you always put a smile on my ugly mug! And we both know there’s no chance I’d have been beave or daft enough to say that within earshot of your Mum!

Hoping for a sell out @ CQN Corner tonight. My Dad’s first time there. My son’s umpteenth, going by the look on his face!

The cynic tells me tonight is a guaranteed win for us, and the return leg will be very close and down to some bizzarre refereeing.

    Or vice versa…..

Then again it’s only the Europa Cup, which brings in minimal millions, so who knows…

I really need to stop thinking aloud.

I just want to see us play our best on a level playing field. This has proven to be a rare thing in recent years, and many years past.

I’ll chip in for the air fair.

Trying to get the Mrs back to Belfast early. Would love to be going but hoot, Milan away and Aberdeen would defo have seen divorce papers filed…….on second thoughts anyone got a spare.

ACGR caught your posts.last evensong. Thought you were on the run after burying 16 under his patio. Neither posted for couple days. Absolute pleasure and blethering with you and the rest of the reprobates.

  14. I don’t really understand those wanting shot of John Guidetti. Yes, he’s having a bit of a dry spell but in 22 appearances he’s scored 11 goals and has 9 assists. That’s really quite impressive.

Leigh Griffiths who is in great form right now has 8 goals and 3 assists in 25 appearance, by comparison.

I’d have JG in a shot if we can get him.

  15. SydneyTim,

Last night I watched the Basel Porto game.Basel, usually a very dangerous wee team at home, were totally played off the park by Porto, who played the most ferocious pressing game I have seen, since Barca at their best.Basel could not get a decent move started the whole game,a beautiful long pass, and great finish got them their goal, but that was their only shot at goal.If th pressing game is played by all the players, then it can be very successful,as Porto proved.Last night Porto hounded them as soon as the ball left their keepers hands.

The commentator was saying as well that Porto are one of the fittest teams in Europe. They have scored something like 17 goals in the last 10 minutes of games.

I think we are on the right road with Ronnie.

  16. Scrolled back over last 4 or 5 pages, fell back in love with the blog. Just love it when all the talk is about Celtic and ghuys helping each other out. Have had a few med problems, still not out of woods but feeling good this morning. My Celtic travelling buddy, has just headed off for Glasgow and as far as I remember for the first time in 15 years, I’m not going with him. A bit sad about that but I need to get myself sorted. Hail Hail to All, Hoping for a memorable day today, but win lose or draw, I’ll wake up happy in the morning to be part of this remarkable Celtic Family, I’m oooff ooot now but I declare my sabbatical over and I’ll be back pitching in my own bit of nonsense later on. HH

  17. Hail Hail, the Canadian Celts are here :-)

Hopefully both of you 2 will be sorted :-)

Hail Hail, only 10 hrs 45 mins to go

Great to see you back on, even though I did notice a couple of posts earlier in the year :-)

    Nice

  19. So winning the Europa League generates around £7M in prize money. The same as getting being in the CL group stages and winning 1 game.

  20. weeminger,

I would have him in a minute also.My crib with him is not signing a contract with us.I am sure Celtic will have offered him our top pay package. Its of no use at all to Celtic if he plays, then walks when the season ends.We will have enough to do in the summer.

If he would sign on then I would be delighted.I really like him as a player.
