Inter will know they’ve been in a game

865

Someone asked me a few weeks ago if this was a must-win game.  Clearly it’s not, the cup games are must-win, as is the coming league game against Aberdeen, but tomorrow night is an important weathervane, indicating if the club is on the road to recovery.

Since that great high against Barcelona, we have faced Italian opposition twice, both in 2013, losing home games 0-3 to Juventus and Milan.  You can trace the decline in European performances through a subsequent Champions League group stage which concluded with five defeats, and last summer’s abject qualification campaign.

Indications are we are a better team now than we were in August, or even when qualifying from our Europa League group, but there is still an almighty task ahead tomorrow night.  I suspect none of this recent history will affect Ronny and his players.  The manager has told the players they can win.  Most of them are playing like they have a point to prove, all of them are looking forward to the challenge.

Inter will know they’ve been in a game.

If Macanbheatha’s son is now sorted for a ticket, I can be at the Corner for 7.15, no problem.

I’ll check back at lunchtime to confirm things if you’re on the blog.

I disagree and this goes for those that have the opinion that any loan is a waste if they don’t sign on permanently.

If JG was to score goals that propelled us to the final or even semi final of Europa, or wins us the treble then he does two things. He (obviously) brings us prizes and the money that comes with them, he increases the feelgood factor around the club and brings fans through the door. Importantly he helps increase (or cement) the profile of the club. Even if he doesn’t sign he helps increase the attractiveness of the club not only to potential purchases but also to top level loanees who can see that such a move enhances career prospects either with the team they came from or to a higher level club elsewhere.

I would take a new top level loanee in the same position year after year over an average long term signing every time. If it brings success to the club.

I sincerely hope he sees the light after tonight and signs up.

  10. weeminger,

I have no problem with class “Loanees”either. My thing is,if it is a season long, and we know this, then its easier to make future plans. We have agreed a deal with City,so as long as JG keeps us hanging around,we have to sit and wait until he makes up his mind.

I really hope the Cup Finals, and nights like tonight, help sway him.He could be a great player for us for a good few years.

    Enjoy tonight.

  11. Got to worth a couple of Lev?

Stefan Johansen to score and Celtic to win 1‐0…………….90/1

  12. The Battered Bunnet on

Really looking forward to the match tonight. Not because I have any specific expectation though. I think it’s because I have no idea what to expect from this emerging Celtic team.

The game will give a measure of the distance travelled under Ronny Deila, and moreover, a measure of the distance still ahead.

Will it be a great performance and disappointing result? A solid, safe performance that keeps the tie alive? A poor performance but an unlikely result? Will we be left to rue the space left behind our full backs, or applaud the audacity of playing 2 at the back versus Inter Milan?

Matthews and Izaguirre have run the course and distance against better teams, Brown too. But for the likes of Denayer at the back, Biton and Johansen in midfield, pretty much all of our forwards and indeed our new bhoys on the block, this is a new test with a new standard.

Looking forward to seeing if they can cut the Serie A mustard.

I mentioned yourself in one of my first post just before Christmas, hope that didn’t put you off the blog, hope everything is good or getting better with yourself, met a few dads on the school run this morning, everyone buzzing about the game tonight, I try not to get too confident but I fancy us strongly tbut would take 0-0 right now, fancy wee Griffiths to score so not putting a penny on him, sometimes my cash can nullify any of our inform strikers, I think it was me who knocked Guidetti off his great run, anyway 10hrs to kick off, Monthehoops !

  18. Right I really need to get to work, just as well I’m the big boss

  20. Sorry earlier, Tom. Just saying what was on my mind this morning.

I used to get nerves before any Celtic game. Haven’t any just now, although I may well do come match time. I think it is because my expectations are low but I feel sure that we are on the right track. I DO believe if we were playing in a more competitive league our players would improve. They have the potential, imo, and we have the manager to get the best out of them.

    WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED.

Well a big night tonight for the hoops all I want to see is that we have progressed since the Maribor game.I think it is a big ask for us to win the tie over the two games but we can give a good account of ourselves and show the footballing world that we are on the right track with Rony it will be good to see Parkhead full again and I hope the crowd are in good voice and we have one of those great European nights. Well that’s my gear all laid out for later, tickets are in my coat pocket. Only dilemma I have is that my wife bought me a new scarf this week, do I wear a new one on such a big night ?

As you can tell I’m a bit superstitious on big game nights, would never dream of putting a bet on Celtic, so what about a new scarf ? This is going to bother me all day. Thoughts ??…

Although `only` the last 32 of the Europa League, this has the feel of a BIG game about it.

We could have had a much less attractive draw and still been put out the competition so let`s enjoy this one. If we win, brilliant. If we lose, it makes the League that little bit easier.

There are very few occasions in sport which match Celtic Park on a European night. There are none which surpass it. Let us leave the ground knowing we have played our part.
