Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

At home against any Scottish side I am looking at a win.

I will settle for 2-0 instead of 4-0 though due to the game last night.

I love it when you willfully ignore the argument being presented.

Of course there’s a contextual element to this kind of example too.

If you’re standing at a KKK meeting shouting obscenities at them then it’s unlikely you could categorise it to be racist. They are after all dressed in all their finery.

If, on the other hand, you are shouting it at a group white men you are doing so purely on the colour of their skin, and in that instance it could reasonably be assumed that there’s a racial element to it.

  4. Wolfsburg are second in Bundesliga 8 pts behind Bayern and 10 pts clear of 3rd.

They will be strong favourites to beat Inter and also to lift the Europa League. Would have been another great tie for us and a while since we played a German team in ko rounds. Next season !

Need to make sure we are right for Sunday, both physically and mentally. May be sluggish in the first half so hope Ronny picks an 11 who are focussed and ready.

Would imagine the 4-2 will take care of itself but the 3-1 will be vital. Think Johansen will start (doesn’t do tiredness) and KC may well start as will GMS who only played 35 mins last night. If SA has the energy he should be ok and if Leigh is fit he will be raring to go.

First half lethargy may be our enemy so a big vocal drowd plus the players’ frustration may be enough for a win.

Then on to St J at CP on Wednesday – 6 points from those 2 games should set up the SPFL title for us. HH

  5. Happy with what I saw of the performance (on a stream, which didn’t settle until 2 mins before the sending off): When I saw VVD’s tackle, I thought “that’s a booking”, at that time I hadn’t appreciated VVD had already been booked once. I thought the first Inter booking was a little harsh – the ref had a bad day, but that happens. The Inter players made the most of things, but so did some of ours at times (JG), so of course the referee gets taken on. Like it or not,, that’s part of the international game, complaining about that is like complaining that British teams are more physical. If we are good enough, we overcome that, we have in the past.

However, I agree with MWD, we lost this tie at Celtic Park. The margins are not great for us, and against a team like Inter (who http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ shows have a squad worth 5 times the Celtic squad) these things count. And although we can say that Craig Gordon made mistakes, he’s still the best Celtic keeper I’ve ever seen (Billy McNeill’s memory is not predicated on losing the ball to Prati against AC Milan in 1969!). But our progress is good, very good in fact. Holding on to what we have got is the real worry.

At the moment, the glass is 3/4 full.

  6. In response to the reply to my previous post forget about football for a minute. In big business there is undoubtedly corruption, industrial espionage or whatever. As a business it makes sense to take steps to counter such illegal activity that might be occurring. When millions are at stake then for a business not to take such possibilities into account and put in place some kind of measure against them is inviting such activity to repeat again and again at great cost to that organisation. To be clear I am not saying there has been any illegal activity but with the track record of corruption in Italian sport it is irresponsible not to consider that it might be occurring.

  7. Quite apart from what I would term the rather sinister element of many of the decisions of the officials last night – like sideline throws, penalty denied and no free kicks allowed to Celtic that I can remember in danger areas in the first half particularly and blatant corner kick just before Virgil got the line – John Guidetti’s display was a huge disappointment. This was the player I was really banking on to deliver in the San Siro. His timing and control were shocking. But give him credit for keeping us in the tie with his strike at Celtic Park.

Celtic have played a massive fourteen matches in Europe this season and I’ve really enjoyed the run. Sure Legia and Maribor were a letdown but then we had a new management team and the squad is now super fit and Ronny has a settled team. The central defensive situation will have to be sorted if Denayer and Virgil are for the off. Question mark over Guidetti will he go or will he stay.

Another big match on Sunday and Aberdeen are talking a great game at present and our young squad will be well up for this and will be well recovered by Sunday. Young players will thrive playing on front of 50,000 fans.
