Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

  1. The flare culprit was;

    An idiot – possible

A fan from outside Scotland who was unaware of our previous – possible.

Someone with an axe to grind who knew their actions would result in trouble for Celtic – possible.

The fact they were standing beside an “ultras” flag makes me lean towards the latter possibility.

Just my opinion like. No axe to grind.

  2. I’m not sure why the green brigade are being held up about the predictably stupid use of pyro last night.

The individual(s) responsible for the incident should be identified and banned but to lay this at the door of the green brigade is nonsense.

My understanding and I’m happy to be corrected is that the GB don’t attend away games as the GB.

Those who use pyro seem to have no care for the club and their fellow supporters.

I don’t know if these flares/smoke bombs/ fireworks carry any real danger but I have been close to their effect recently at Rugby Park and I would prefer not to be.

Citing that other club’s supporters across Europe use them as some sort of defence is whataboutery of the highest order. I don’t care what other clubs do or don’t do.

My club, Celtic are being damaged by the actions of a few selfish wee tubes who think it’s big and clever.

    It’s not.

    Wise up.

  3. On Radio Scotland last night, Willie Miller said, when ref was being discussed, that he was surprised that anyone was surprised by his performance and that we should have been wise to it.

Fair comment from someone who reffed many a game in his time.

Yeah agree. I doubt he will ever have a worse half than he did in the first leg. Fantastic signing.

Hope yer flares are ironed. Lot of scrutiny around them at the minute.

“Ah don’t know much, but am telling you that guy is never a football player, a basketball player, maybe.

    Never a footballer”

  6. I like the fact that Ronny is building a team of fighters, we have quite a few who can stand up for themselves in the team now and will fight for the jersey and who can sort it out if necessary:)))

If I were in charge of Celtic the next time we face an Italian team I would consider contacting a discrete middleman to hire a private investigator and get him on to the referee’s case as soon as he was appointed.

This is more like the paranoia that we would expect on a Govan centered website and imho inappropriate and does this blog no credit.

Do you honestly think UEFA would not react very badly to such a proposition?

‘It is unlawful though to show hostility towards Rangers supporters based on a presumption of their religion, thus is “Orange bastard” both sectarian and unlawful, Orange being an exclusively Protestant identity, and religion being a protected characteristic.’

By that logic, if there was an organisation that restricted its membership to white people, lets call them the KKK, it would be racist to call someone a KKK bastard, because skin colour is a protected characteristic.

Regarding the Devlin case, media reports are sketchy, but there seems to have been at least a half hearted attempt to object to the religious aggravation part of the charge. Whatever, it can not be regarded as a definitive statement of the law. Doubtless the court was very busy and the sheriff pressed for time.

I thought James Forrest looked lost night, I’d like to see him given time though to sort out whatever issues he has. His running style looks all wrong, but his attitude needs worked on as well. I don’t know how many times he loses the ball and throws his arms up in the air. He wont get any sympathy from the rest of the team or crowd with that attitude. Take him aside for a spell and work on these things as he could still turn out to be a player. GMS will be a first pick over him from now on anyway…

Agreed. Don;t go for that myself.

The difference in the two ties bar the mistakes was Inter had £10m+ front men.

I think you can do better than that. Go on. Give it a go.

  13. Livibhoy

The difference in the tie was the referee’s decision not to award a penalty and red card for the same type of foul that brought VVD’s second yellow.

What about “NAACP bastard”? Do you accept that there’s a racist element to that?

The issue here is not how an organisation behaves or goes about it’s business but who it represents.

What if it was Jason Denyer shouting ‘KKK bastard’? That surely could constitute racist behaviour.

Perhaps you could point out what it is about my statement that you consider to be wrong.

  16. For me the term hun means a belligerent attitude to others. A state of mind. It can apply to anyone.

It is the case though that it is an attitude more discernible in numbers terms amongst supporters of TRFC but not exclusively so.

If you want to stop being referred to by that term change your attitude . No one else can do it for you.

That would be my answer but I’d never make First Minister.

Hope Inter’s comparatively ‘bigger’ name makes the odds on Wolfsburg to qualify greater than they should be, according to current form.

If we had a striker like Icardi and a winger like Shaqiri the tie would have been over at home. These are the margins at times. Happy with the performance and effort from our Bhoys though.

When the NAACP have developed a history of lynching white people because of the colour of their skin you might have a point.

  21. Yeah, me too.

And, given those efforts, and lack of recovery time after playing with 10 men, I don’t think a draw on Sunday would upset me too much.

Duplicity, deception and dishonesty. The 3Ds that apply to Craig Whyte and his cohorts.

What are the chances they obeyed the rules in 2011 to justify retaining their UEFA licence?

    We need to talk.

  25. Well I’m not even gonna mention the ref , We have seen it all before . What I will mention is the fact that under Ronny D we are seeing a team on the up . As yet we are not the finished article , but we are getting there . But as previously stated celtic will need to replace the centre of defence , (. Which Imho is a blow ) the reason being that instead of getting in replacements for the positions we could improve on , the club will need to start looking for 2 central defenders first , which I would imagine will eat up the budget , but other improvements are required , and would be welcome IMHO .
