Inverness panic instead of asking for support

447

There has been an enormous amount of guff said and written during the last five months but last night’s statement by Inverness Caledonian Thistle chairman, Kenny Cameron, is surely is up there with the most bizarre.

“All clubs will now have to live with the repercussions of this decision. Scottish football was at a cross roads today in terms of what was on the table for all clubs regarding reorganisation, financial distribution and a road map that would have taken the game forward.

“But this has now been thrown in to disarray by this decision. This is a sad day for all clubs in Scotland.

“Certain clubs in the SFL have perceived the financial information they were receiving as a ‘big stick’ to beat them into accepting Newco in the First Division. This was definitely not the case, as far as I am concerned. What they were being told was the reality of the situation.

“We will be convening an emergency board meeting over the weekend to discuss the very serious financial implications for us as a club going forward.”

Instead of explaining to the people of Inverness that buying season tickets will prevent the club making non-football staff redundant he seems to be preparing the ground for significant cutbacks.

This is the reality for every club in the SPL and several in the SFL.  Fans, including Inverness fans, demanded that a sporting element was retained in their game.  Now they’ve gotten their way, Inverness and the rest should be putting out the clarion call for fans to buy tickets.

As football fans, this is our responsibility.  35 out of 42 clubs voted to reject Sevco into anything other than the bottom level of Scottish football.  Now we must step forward.

P.S. You don’t really need me to tell you, but buy a season ticket now!

The question needs to be asked who told them this ? I dont think its hard to guess now the plan has unravelled when the SFL voted newco into Div3 if the get a vote to join the FA.Suddenly some SPL clubs are realising the scam that was promised of Newco and there support being back in the SPL with there large following in just one season has stalled.Mondays SPL meeting could be a volitile one with a call being made from the floor to reverse the previous decision and allow newco SPL status.Anyone doubting now that Scottish football is corrupt must have there eyes and ears open.H.H.

.Dundee left ‘in limbo’ over league status uncertainty

Dundee chief executive Scot Gardiner says the Dens Park club have been left “in limbo” ahead of the new season.

With no Rangers in the Scottish Premier League, last season’s Division One runners-up Dundee have been proposed for a top flight entry.

But Dunfermline, who were relegated from the SPL last term, feel they should take up the vacancy.

Gardiner said on Sportsound : “Where are Dundee going to be playing and when are we going to be told that?”

The relaunched Rangers, who were unsuccessful in obtaining the old Ibrox club’s place in the top tier, were voted into Division Three on Friday but Dundee and Dunfermline are still unsure where they will be playing.

The SPL begins on 4 August with the fixtures currently listing “Club 12” as Rangers’ replacement. Division One starts on 11 August.

Top flight clubs meet for their AGM on Monday and Gardiner is hoping for clarity.

“I’m only hoping that we get a conclusion as quickly as possible because we find ourselves in a very difficult position,” he added on BBC Radio Scotland.

    SPL return?

Dundee last featured in the SPL in season 2004-05 and were relegated when they finished bottom of the division

“I’ve not spoken to [chief executive] Neil [Doncaster] or any of the board of the SPL. I haven’t had any emails, I haven’t had any letters.

“We have been planning to win the First Division for a couple of months and we’ve been adding to our squad all with a view to winning the First Division.

“But we’ve had to stop a lot of things behind the scenes because we could put the club in real danger if we were to take the wrong decisions; it would be very damaging for the club.

“We’re in limbo and I’m just asking for someone to just step up and say, ‘all the votes have been held now, here’s the situation’ and Dundee FC will be playing either in the SPL or in the First Division.

“I think it damages all of the game, it doesn’t just damage us. I think someone has to show some real leadership here, get a grip of things and say, ‘this is what’s required to happen’.

“We’ve got a lot of hard work to get the credibility of the game back. It will only [recover] if there’s honesty and integrity and it’s been thin on the ground. It’s going to take some brave men and women to stand up and do the right thing.”

Seriously though, if you want to improve football we need a structure that feeds players with potential up through a pyramid structure. I can only assume that they current structure has survived be cause it is works. What we need to do is improve how talent is spotted, nurtured and fed up through the leagues to wards the professional clubs. If anything we need to get rid of the kick-the-***-out-of-you style of football. It’s cultural change that’s required not major restructuring.

  5. 29th June

St Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour has released a club statement, discussing the club’s stance on Rangers Newco, financial uncertainty and league reconstruction.

Gilmour states that the club will maintain its principle of sporting integrity, but that the financial reality of that may mean cuts at the club

    Statement in full

As the temperature rises in the ongoing saga of above, it should be made clear to all St Mirren supporters that Stewart Gilmour met with Charles Green, Alistair McCoist and other representatives of Rangers Newco last week.

“I made it perfectly clear that our Directors view was that our club would not be voting for a Newco entry to the SPL, directly to the officials of Rangers Newco. This meeting was held in confidential circumstances to allow both parties to enable the other to see there respective positions.

A very positive meeting was held, however, the position of St Mirren has not changed and our stance of sporting integrity was maintained against the very pressing commercial arguments.

Regrettably, the commercial and hence financial impact is still not clear to the club, we are very hopeful that this aspect will become clearer in the next few days. This will play a major part in the decision making for the Board of Directors as to the way forward for the club in the short term.

We are obviously hoping that our commercial and television partners stay with the league through this very difficult period. It has been impossible for the clubs to downsize as quickly as we would like, due to the contractual obligations of the club, these are considerable and must be maintained to ensure the club does not slip into the fate of others.

It is possible that major cutbacks may have to be made within the company, this may well involve people in the club losing their employment, not a good situation, so please accept that the club will be unlikely to be signing any new players until this situation is clear.

Naturally we hope that if our partners mentioned above do not invoke exit clauses in their contracts we would not have to go down this route. The decision on those matters is outwith the control of the club, let us hope that the possible scenarios are not as severe as they could possibly be and that we show those partners our support to convince them to support Scottish Football.

As events unfold this may be an opportunity for real change in Scottish Football, St Mirren shall throw their weight totally behind a 16 team league structured in a similar way to the Belgium system with a large number of crossover games at the end of the season to determine Relegation, European places and Champions.

This with a change in the distribution model would allow us to look after the interests of all full time teams in the country on a football and financial basis. With a ten team league below this for aspiring SPL clubs and a pyramid system beneath that, this would allow all clubs to develop and find their place in Scottish Football.

The poll conducted has confirmed the opinion of the Board, which has enabled us to confirm our position publicly, in addition a sixteen team top league has been the fans expressed view and this now may be possible to rebuild a solid future for Scottish Football, Scottish Football Clubs and its Supporters.

If the SPL dares to try and get Sevco back into the top league then I reckon it’s time for a breakaway from the original breakaway league. I wouldn’t put anything past the two incompetents at the SFA and the SPL.

I have been thinking about the TV deal that Sky have been so generous to offer to the SPL over the last few years. I am sure you all saw that excellent article someone posted a few days back about the equivalent deals for coverage of other leagues around Europe and you will have seen how poorly Scotland’s deal compares.

To put the 16m per season deal in perspective the budget for eastenders from the BBC is 30m per year. 30m for a product that has such low overheads and has such little overheads and generates no revenue (through sponsorship etc) in comparison to coverage of the SPL which has huge overheads in the form of wages and generates huge revenues in advertising money as well as subscription money’s and generates huge economic benefits for the country to general employment.

Setanta were offering 31m per year before they went under and to me this was a fairer value for the TV deal. Neil Doncaster would be better off doing his job and concentrating on promoting the SPL product and getting better value for the SPL clubs in the form of a decent TV contract AND decent sponsorship revenue. I am personally getting more than tired of this whole mess but at least it has done one thing in that it has made football fans aware of how poor a job the SPL chief exec has done in promoting the league and how little revenue he has been generating for the clubs.

Any well run company, football otherwise, should have people running them that can plan for most eventualities. Setting aside their statements prior to them voting them out of the SPL, they should have had the foresight to plan for the eventuality of dead club either playing in the Division Three or if they end up pushing up the Daisies at Cathkin Park.

    Dino, comfortable collective,

The SPL should now look very seriously at setting up their own TV company.

At £10 / month , the number of subscribers needed to generate more revenue than the current deal isn’t particularly high.

From media reports, Sky claim to have 36% penetration of UK households, but , I suspect this is only for lower value packages. On a pro rats basis, in Scotland alone, that will equate to around 800,000 households, although I suspect the penetration is higher in Scotland than the rest of UK.

At £10 / month for a SPL match package, 200 k households would generate c £24m per annum.

If you assume that production and carriage costs , can be offset by advertising revenue, that provides a Win Win for everyone.

It would have its challenges, but, it doesn’t need to use conventional technology e.g. It could run on YouTube or some similar platform.

Stewart Regan hasn’t covered himself in glory in the last few weeks, but, he did make the point yesterday that the future of Scottish Football needs innovative thinking ….well, here is a great opportunity, to get our balls out of the vice, and create our own wealth.

  34. Dundee Utd have just hammered in the final nail

Following yesterday’s democratic vote by the SFL clubs in favour of admitting The Rangers Football Club as an associate member of the SFL, but with the Third Division being the only acceptable position, Dundee United will now focus on our upcoming campaign while working together with the other SPL clubs to ensure the stability of the SPL and Scottish football in what will be an uncertain and extremely challenging financial environment.

For the avoidance of doubt, following yesterday’s vote, the Club would not support any counter proposals for the formation of SPL 2 or regarding any other route for The Rangers Football Club to join the SPL.

Now is the time for everyone to be united as one and we ask our supporters to stand alongside us as we face the challenges ahead.
