Israeli recruiting anchor

965

Anchoring to a distant geographical base is not intuitively how you would expect a football club to recruit but Celtic are clearly working their contacts in Israel these days.  Beram Kayal has worked out well in the two and a half years since joining from Maccabi Haifa, as has Nigeria international, Efe Ambrose, who joined from Israeli club Ashdod in the summer.

Neil Lennon recently mentioned he needed cover for left back (despite right-footed Adam Matthews performing heroics there against Barcelona), so it is no surprise that Israel international Rami Gershon is in town today.  Gershon has played less than a dozen games for Standard Liege since leaving Israel three years ago, although he was a regular pick for loan club Kortrijk.  Should he sign he will be a low-risk addition to the squad but he has almost certainly received commendation from the same sources who recommended Kayal and Ambrose.

Best of luck to Rabiu Ibrahim, who left for Kilmarnock after promising much but delivering little as a prodigy at Sporting and PSV Eindhoven.  He was the low-risk addition of last January.  You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs……

    Just dropped in to say…..

More – Cheapo/Bargain-Basement/Freebie/Loan/Trialist -types of players being recruited.

    Hmmmmm

Where does all the money go ?

Oh, me and another 20-30k of empty seats can’t be wrong ?

I would say that is at least 50/50 with perhaps the chairs shading it.

the money goes in players pockets btw.

Great rant about Sally not getting a winter break. Honestly, I had the same one earlier. Great minds think a like or fools seldom differ?

There will be some criticism along the way but IMHO Neil Francis Lennon has brought in a man who will change the way our players act and think.

Its 52mins of Donegal all Ireland but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  4. I wouldn’t sell any player at this time, but I think PL will be saying a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.A big name player will be sold.HH

What argument? In your original post you complained that you had paid £600 (money being important) to watch “rubbish” and be “exploited” at Celtic Park. In your last post you described our team’s football as “mince”.

Maybe we should get the link to that poll site and ask the posters if Celtic are mince. Wonder what the result would be.

fanad – we’re under no financial pressure to sell in this window and our main players wouldn’t want to move to bottom half EPL teams when they’ve got a CL tie against Juve coming up.

Selling certain players at a price that suits us in the summer is a different story entirely….!

Celtic became only the third team in UK to break 700k mark for home attendances, they’ve attracted 730,451 to home games so far this season

That’ll be the mince football that’s attracting so many people, eh;)

  10. Just heard that John Barrowman got injured falling off a horse at the panto today.

I wish him well but I’m sure he’ll be back in the saddle in no time!;-)

  11. I`m not giving them ma money till they sign `big` name players. They should be signing £12million players from places like Norway n`at. I`ll then wait to see if they turn out good, but if they`re duds then they`re still no gettin ma money. 20-30k of empty seats canny be wrong, but if everybody was like me there would be 60k empty seats. Then they`d need to sign loads of £12m players to get anyone to go. Why don`t Celtic sign hundreds of big time charlies, just spend recklessly, speculate to accumulate, it works, just look at ra gers, they`re runnin amok in the league. And not with cheapo bargain based players like Scunthorpians Kenyans, Hondurans etc. I might go to the pub and watch it on an illegal stream and spend ma dosh on Guinness instead.

Would your song and splendid beauty take

from me the dead loathsomeness of these ways,

the brute and the brigand at the head of Europe

and your mouth red and proud with the old song?

from me the foul black treachery,

spite of the bourgeois and poison of their creed

Ryan McGowan moves to China so save himself for RANGERS. By Keith Jackson

The defender is temporarily in China after troubled Hearts agreed a £400,000 fee with Shandong Luneng Taishan.

According to reports, the move will only be short-term until November until he can play for Rangers – who are under a transfer embargo until September. Shandong Luneng Taishan are only keeping him warm and ticking over until the unjustified transfer

    embargo is lifted.

The stable Glasgow giants turned McGowan down in the August window but McCoist admits the player is still on his radar.

He said: “He’s a good player absolutely. Ryan is a player we obviously tried to get earlier, but we decided that we did not want to upset Hearts by taking so many of their players at the one time and on tick. The Chinese have agreed to look after him for us until such times that we feel we can pounce absolutely”

“He’s like everybody else, we keep a completely open mind and we monitor players who we have been watching and we will continue to do that.

“I would absolutely rule nothing out. Absolutely”

Rangers are unable to recruit new players this month but can sign free agents from September 1, meaning McCoist will be looking to secure his targets on pre-contract agreements over the coming weeks.

He said: “There is no progress as yet but we’ve got one or two dozen players we have been running the rule over that we’ve got on the radar.

“Our chief scout has been keeping us updated but there is nothing to report yet. Absolutely nothing”

While making plans to bolster his squad later in the year, McCoist is also keen to reward some of his current players with new deals, including defender Chris Hegarty, who is on a one-year contract.

The manager said: “If there is one player in the squad who probably deserves a contract, it would be Hegarty.

I haven’t had any great lengthy discussions with him, just brief fleeting discussions with him. I am not avoiding him absolutely not”

“He’s earned the opportunity to get himself a new contract, with the way he has come clean and smart to training every day. No Iphone head phones a short back and sides and always wearing a shirt and tie”

“We have to look outside but we have to reward the players who represent the traditions of this club well and he is one that we will absolutely look at eventually. No doubt about it”

While a new deal could be good news for Hegarty, there was bad news for another young defender, Darren Cole.

He could miss the rest of the season if he does not loose some weight from the strict dietary conditions that the Rangers supremo has imposed on him which forced him out of the midweek win at Annan, having recently returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

McCoist said: “The immediate signs are that, unfortunately, it looks as though he is still young and has a good bit of puppy fat on him. It´s not the lads fault as he is very young still and puppy fat is notoriously difficult to lose in the winter

“I don’t want to pre-empt the situation but, for sake of room on the bus and petrol costs, we will do well to see him again this season. It’s a real shame because he has been disciplined with the diet but the scales dont lie.

“I can see he has grown up tremendously well both physically and mentally and I can see the vast change in him. This, teh weigh in, has just come at an horrendous time for him.

“Hopefully he will handle it okay and the pounds will start to drop of him absolutely, he will just need to come back much thinner and get ready to go again and get his pre-season.”

Meanwhile, McCoist believes a winter break for Clydesdale Bank Premier League teams, while the Scottish Football League sides are still in action, is another example of the disparity within Scottish football.

However, having won their past 11 games, the Light Blues boss is pleased his Irn-Bru Third Division leaders have the opportunity to maintain their momentum when Elgin City come calling tomorrow.

He said: “It seems as though we’re not all singing from the same hymn sheet again.

“One of the leagues gets a winter break and the other leagues play.

“I just think we should all be doing the same thing, whether it’s playing or having a break.

“If we were going into a break now, I would have to say that it would be coming at a bad time for us because we have had a fantastic December and the boys are winning games.

“I have to admit, I’m not too disappointed I don’t have a winter break.”

  17. i remain worried that for all the position we have, we have attained, we look to maintain…

… i remain worried that people are disgruntled at our team not doing exactly what we chastised the dead mob for doing.

    The undescribed desires and…

Complete superiority – cricket scores – top drawer signings – no sales

They buggers gilded the lily on the back end of Thatcher’s years and rode the wave of property BS with a healthy dollop of metal sales.

It’s 2013 and most people can hardly afford to petrol their cars til next payslip never mind maintain a faithful support of the club they love.

There’s many want to but can’t.

So take a big step back and think about what Celtic are achieving in the face of some of the grimmest times Western Society has had to face.

Yes, – and it’s a statistic I like to trot out.

But, we have an odd problem with dwindling attendances and I’ve posted before

Celtic need to think long and hard to look for every conceivable solution instead of at best

‘frozen prices on season tickets’ that may not even staedy or maintain this seasons plummet.

The main problem is that despite what others say it’s not just about cost, and sadly it’s about apathy.

  21. tommytwiststommyturns on

fanad – agree with you regarding next season’s SC uptake, which will be down by thousands. In fact, I’m debating whether to renew my own in section 408! I’ve had that since our return from Hampden, but I’ve been swithering for a number of years.

We will sell a couple of players in the summer transfer window and combined with this season’s CL windfall, we will still be in a stable financial position. We’re only doing what Ajax and others have been doing for the last two decades and the sold players will be replaced by well-scouted, low-cost alternatives.

  23. bournesouprecipe,

I know what you mean. However, I suspect that this season’s exploits, augmented by one or two judicious signings, will encourage take-up.

Lots of the support have struggled with no or below inflation pay rises, unemployment and the rising cost of living. It would be good to see a return of an old fashioned cash father and son gate, and perhaps discounted on the day hospitality deals to encourage one off upgrades, if that would be possible.

The oft discussed membership scheme would help, too.

Most of all, if all the support chose to endorse and advertise our successes we might benefit from word of mouth, too.
