It doesn’t look good, Guardian. It doesn’t look good at all

Last week’s advert in the Tribune de Geneve was in English, despite the predominant local language being French. The primary target audience were Uefa representatives and functionaries, who are not drawn from the local Nyon catchment area, and will most likely speak English, with secondary target audiences in the UK. I hear both targets were reached.

There was a short-lived chat about which language to run with in Switzerland, but consensus was quickly reached that English was appropriate and sufficient. No translation was ever made.

Very much related to this subject…….

There was an incident when I was at school (many years ago). Two boys had exactly the same maths homework. This would have been fine had the work been correct, but the made exactly the same mistakes, so the teacher had sufficient proof to establish that he didn’t have two independently produced pieces of work.

The class lesson that day was, if you’re going to coordinate a response, you better get your facts right, or you’ll get caught.

Shortly after the Tribune de Geneve advert ran it was brought to my attention that some regularly-hostile-to-Celtic online loons were running with a line that an English advert had been sent to Switzerland and a French advert had been sent to an English newspaper by mistake.

This was fanciful, but not worthy of attention, because as you now know, there was never a French translation of the advert.

You can imagine my utter astonishment, therefore, that The Guardian claimed they didn’t run the advert because it was submitted to them in French, despite, as surely the world now knows, no French language version of the advert ever existing!

“If you’re going to coordinate a response, get your facts right.” It doesn’t look good, Guardian. It doesn’t look good at all. You’ve been caught in PR vice.

You know how PR works in Scottish football. Celtic and most clubs play with a straight bat: “This is the news relating to our games and events”, but there are clubs, personalities and organisations which are only tenable because of expensive and persuasive PR.

You remember the Poppy banner issue, which became news a full two days after a game, by which time PR could persuade journalists to run with a story which until then had no news value. You are only too familiar with some of the vacuous characters ushered into the game by newspapers demanding Lloyds Bank approve a takeover, while PR spun incredible lies about finance and probity.

The next time Celtic, or their manager, is vulnerable on a subject, look out for this Malign Influence.  It battered Ronny Deila when he lost games, and recently went for Peter Lawwell.

My thanks to The Guardian advertising people, who confirmed to us this morning that the advert they received was in English. That’s the other thing about coordinating a Malign Influence, you need to get buy-in from a lot of people!

I sincerely hope your hope is good hope.

Supporting Celtic on an uneven playing field when we have had ample opportunities to challenge this in the last few years and indeed the next few years ( the big tax case outcome), is going to be very difficult when those Honest Mistakes, bigoted songs and even worse hatred start to re-appear with a vengeance when the new but dead club hit the SPFL.

Not sure if Brendan’s infectious smile that has brought us so much sunshine over the last 2 weeks or so, will block this out :-)

Don’t get bogged down by posters asking stupid questions. So, are you in your own seat for the Leicester game?

Read the email trail earlier, looks like the cash was taken and withheld to stop you going elsewhere??

A lesson to be learned (as all lessons are) get the advert approved first before you part with the cash?

Not a dig by any stretch.

    Gearoid, I’m well thanks.

The collusion issues along with the Kincora scandal and the lack of public outcry is a sad indictment of the one way coverage the British media have of crimes commited by British governments throughout history.

The honours list released with the vile Alan Shearer and that nasty bit of business Stuart Broad getting honours exemplifies how ridiculous it is.

A few years back it was refreshing that Paul Weller knocked back an honour as he would be a hypocrite to accept it

  7. Been really bud at work this week so haven’t been able to follow the Res12 stuff too closely.

However what did surprise me was the Herald asking for business then rejecting it.

Could it be that they were acting for someone else who wanted to get sight of the ad?

Did anyone else notice that this story was completely swamped in less than 24 hours by a tsunami of of grief and wailing and gnashing of teeth about those bad republicans.

Although I agree with Hebcelt that the “honours ” system is well by its sell by date, I am still dissapointed that Kenny Dalglish did not get the recognition he deserved.

Copy came from Res 12 guys as we agreed. We did have an input but it was their copy and it came in on 27th May. The ad space had to be booked well in advance and had to be paid for. The newspaper was made aware from the very beginning re the subject matter for the ad. If you read that email trail again the guy who took the booking and was pretty shocked at what happened points the finger at Senior management.

The ad has no legal issues, in fact it is pretty weak. That was the intention though as it would have reached a big audience who know or care little about Scottish football.

Someone, in my opinion, spiked the ad. Remember the Herald approached us, were very keen, never at any stage saw the copy but pulled out due to a decision taken by ‘the powers that be’ – so someone got to both papers in my view.

I don’t think they knew who to speak to at the Swiss paper and remember we changed papers after receiving intelligence from Switzerland. I am hearing the ad was very well received there incidentally.

Meanwhile UK media spending on Res 12 from our budget is £0.00. Awareness for Res12 issue is through the roof.

Wait to you see what is going to happen next week. Keep your seatbelts fastened, we’re going after the can of worms!

  15. Imagine my surprise. Sitting at home tonight on my see-saw watching the Euro’s when a trilling vibrating buzz of my phone occurred. There’s me watching my recording of Eurovision and Mark (we have dropped surnames now as we share alarm calls n all) is there at the other end of a connection trying to get a hold of me again. So as my see-saw lands I swipe my mobile communications module from it’s perch on my swing and to my surprise it wasn’t Mark, my best new buddy and friend ever but another. I love Mark so much that the others friendly text comes somewhat as a disappointment. Anyway as you know. I like Mark lots but in also on terms of friendship with my current trilling wobbling vibrating buddy . So I swipe to read the text.

And there it is! A wee bit of Res12 info that the direction is looking mighty awesome. So my buddy, not a buddy like Matk because he’s the best, has said something that makes me think I should put a rolling 48 hour hold on my Q’s of the good guys. The text did not put my mind at ease re. the PLC inAction as it seems my trust in them is burned. But for now the high held of esteem resolutioners can resolution away in the knowledge that I’ll only be putting Marked questions to Mark of which I will not speak if the answers or the questions because he’s mad mentally a friend that I’ve never dreamed of liking like a buddy above all.

So like the Mississipi I’ll let res12 just keep rolling along for a rolling 48 hour period or so while I concentrate on playing on my see-saw and breaking electronic comms lamb with my besty Mark.
