It would choke Scottish Government to acknowledge Celtic contribution

807

You read the Scottish Government’s response last week when a Glasgow business won £40m worth of export income, shared with others in their sector from Dingwall to Kilmarnock? Celtic’s Champions League success this month has been phenomenal economic news for Glasgow in particular, and Scotland in general, but it would break the Scottish Government scarcely concealed agenda towards Celtic for them to acknowledge the contribution to our economy.

Instead they peddle some hoary old trash in attempting to defend their thoroughly discredited Offensive Behaviour’ Act, which sought to “equalise” supporters behaving lawfully with those behaving in a sectarian manner.

The Government, which for years placed great political capital into respecting the will of the Scottish Parliament, suddenly decided Parliament’s voice could be ignored by Government, when the chamber voted to repeal the Act in November.

It would choke these people to acknowledge Celtic’s contribution to the country’s economic welfare. They want your votes, they don’t want to listen to you, or Parliament, or any other body who may represent you, unless you conform to a cultish utopian vision.

We live in the age where governments across the globe bang the Bogeyman Drum, while indulging in crass selective seeing and hearing. This Tartan-Peronist outfit would be wise not to cherry-pick how they tackle Celtic supporters, or our club.

True, but I have seen numerous places that the fee and wages will amount to £3 mill, a tad ott for my reckoning, delighted he is back but, and it’s no like me to say this, the money could and should have been better spent on something permanent.

Meanwhile some PSG fans are worrying that he was only signed because of his name,

“Killian”?.Is that not a bit Timmy sounding?

My post was a tongue in cheek variation on the usual ‘are you a hun?’ question.

For the record, I too am an infrequent poster. I avoid politics on this forum and happen to agree with the football views you’ve posted.

Apologies if that came across as nippy.

Let’s hope Paddy signs up today, and that if it is a loan there is a clause to buy at the end of the season. I can’t imagine Lawell was down in Manchester last week to negotiate a loan deal on the same basis as last year, hopefully we are in for a pleasant surprise.

Kenny Miller was cut a lot of slack.

    More than Johnny Hayes.

Love to know the thought process that occured, with Celtic on the verge of securing an excellent young talent, that led you to conclude that a not insignificant number of fans include his first name as a factor in their excitement.

Doing Celtic supporters a huge disservice, I’d suggest.

  5. Cults

Not interested in getting into the name/ valuation debate but I must say the PR’s development I have found quite exciting to watch.

After the cup semi last year I was highly critical of him and believe he cost us that game. The view, although fair, was not well received on here.

Nonetheless his development over the period has been significant and while I would prefer the move to be permanent, and maybe it will become so, I do think it is a good signing for us

I for one will welcome him back, but will criticise where appropriate

    ” initial years loan ” .

Italian fitba media claim that UEFA have yet to approve the deal. . . Some think PSG might still have to unload some players. Fly a kite pundits suggesting Verratti to Real / Barca / Bayern and Pastore to Bayern /Inter . I used to go to Palermo games to watch Pastore . Often fabulous ,occasionally very poor.

  9. Not saying that Roberts on loan wouldn’t be a good signing but if a £3 Mio loan fee plus £30K a week with no option to buy, we should be spending the money elsewhere for me.

    Im standing by my opinion.

Theres a developing romance between Celtic support and Roberts based primarily on the fact he was a young exciting talent who is a crowd pleaser. He is also a potential match winner in big games.

The fact that he has a good Irish name only ADDS to the romance given our club’s history and connection to Ireland.

Id LOVE him to.sign but not at any price.

  12. Ps

The CQN podcast on Kidso Reilly by Aidso Digney is well worth 25 minutes of people’s time. Exactly as I remembered him …..Celtic to the core.

On the other hand some of our rivals would have you believe that because hes English that will hinder him.

    See how ridiculous that sounds?

    I think its all nonsense.

He’s judged as a footballer regardless of his name, where he was born, even who he supported as a kid.

We’ve enjoyed having the guy for his football ability for 18 months. I think you do the Celtic support a disservice by suggesting his Irish first name is any sort of factor in their excitement but will agree to disagree and leave it there.

They have played some great football over the last few years only to bump into a freakish Dublin team.

I was expecting a tough game yesterday but Dublin strolled it

I think if it keeps going like this we should opt out of the native game and apply to rejoin the mainland

  16. Re JH

If he can play fullback it’s a big benefit to the team, easier position to play as opposed to being a winger. Numerous examples of failed wingers being converted to fullbacks.

I think he’s good enough for us on the wing, was unlucky not to score on Saturday and looked dangerous during his time on the pitch.

My ambition is to have Einstein quote me on a science blog.I think I might be unfulfilled. ;)

  18. MacJay, you did cite Johnny and Paddy, so forgive my interpretation.

My point is as a club open to all performance on the pitch determines success and entertainment value, ability and sheer gallusness will determine cult status:-)

It’s Paddy’s ability and that gallusness(is that a word!) that brings adulation.

And the bromance with Kieran, he is one of our own.

  21. Oh and whether on loan or permanent I would welcome Paddy Roberts back with open arms.

    A fine footballer.

£6.5m rising to a possible £8m has also been rumoured.

Whichever, he will be most welcome, Saturday might have been a different result with him in the side to unlock a determined organised, and pretty decent side.

    Come home Paddy Roberts.

  22. I think I read somewhere recently that Roberts and Hayes had the joint highest number of goal assists in Scotland, last season.

I may be wrong and don’t know where to check …

  23. BAWSMAN…

    Hence ‘unfulfilled’. :)

Although there is a rumour it was his holding company that died and he’s actually on Utopia Island with Hendrix,Presley,Morrison,Gaye et al. ;)

  24. Patrick Roberts is a very talented football player;

    Patrick Roberts is apparently very pally with one of our favourite players;

    Patrick Roberts plays in the same position and with some of the style, as The Greatest Ever Celt;

Patrick Roberts first name , even subliminally, reinforces the Celtic/Ireland connection.

Which of the above is not true?

    JJ

  25. During the previous 18 month loan deal for Paddy we paid 40% of his wages and no loan fee, approx £800k total for a player of that quality is great business.

This time around we don’t know what the deal is but it will be in the best interests of Celtic. I would doubt any more than a couple of million all in. Hopefully the one year loan is structured in such a way that a permanent deal could follow next season.

Anyway, enjoy the little magician while he is here.

  26. DOC

I share your views re Paddy back loan or buy. As regards unlocking St J, though, I felt we did unlock them a few times but hit the bar, narrowly missed or brought out good saves from their `keeper.

I do agree, though, that Paddy is a very good player to have against the ten man defences of the SPFL.
