It would choke Scottish Government to acknowledge Celtic contribution

807

You read the Scottish Government’s response last week when a Glasgow business won £40m worth of export income, shared with others in their sector from Dingwall to Kilmarnock? Celtic’s Champions League success this month has been phenomenal economic news for Glasgow in particular, and Scotland in general, but it would break the Scottish Government scarcely concealed agenda towards Celtic for them to acknowledge the contribution to our economy.

Instead they peddle some hoary old trash in attempting to defend their thoroughly discredited Offensive Behaviour’ Act, which sought to “equalise” supporters behaving lawfully with those behaving in a sectarian manner.

The Government, which for years placed great political capital into respecting the will of the Scottish Parliament, suddenly decided Parliament’s voice could be ignored by Government, when the chamber voted to repeal the Act in November.

It would choke these people to acknowledge Celtic’s contribution to the country’s economic welfare. They want your votes, they don’t want to listen to you, or Parliament, or any other body who may represent you, unless you conform to a cultish utopian vision.

We live in the age where governments across the globe bang the Bogeyman Drum, while indulging in crass selective seeing and hearing. This Tartan-Peronist outfit would be wise not to cherry-pick how they tackle Celtic supporters, or our club.

That’s my point, maybe inelegantly made by me. The player’s name makes no difference. Whatever he’s called, if he can do it on the pitch he’ll do for me. And Roberts can. And towards the end of last season, he frequently did.

McCourt was undoubtedly cut a lot of slack. I don’t think it was because he was called Patrick. Brattbakk was cut a lot of slack, and it sure wasn’t because he was called Harald.

We just wanted these guys to do well. We wanted McCourt to be the genius that, occasionally, his football suggested he could be. We wanted Brattbakk to score for Celtic the number and kind of goals he had done for Rosenborg. Ultimately it didn’t work out for them, but they gave us some treasured memories.

Those memories would have been the same had they been called…whatever.

  5. I think if William ‘Billy’ Hitler signed for us his name would have an effect on how we viewed him.Unlikey,I know,as apparently he’s a striker (unusual in itself as he’s no union man) and we only play one up. ;))

I have no doubt that the mega clubs get their way but in this particular case some informed journos are of the opinion that PSG might have to do some window dressing / creative accountancy to allow UEFA to continue to pay lip service to that FFP thing..

  9. Dear Paul……

Not sure where that rant came from. Did you just get out on the wrong side this morning? Unless you know something the rest of us don’t what on earth stimulated your latest leader.

Amongst many things which really rips my knitting the expectation that governments or ministers have to comment on every bloody thing that happens in life is way up there.

The less heard from these people the better unless or until something they actually have responsibility for happens or is about to happen.

    Paddy….

I admit to not being much of a fan of the young man until and after the New Year game at Ibrox. That day and thereafter my image of him as a bit of a one trick pony and sand dancer was totally transformed.

His ability to see either killer passes or find advanced spaces is, imo, unrivalled. His ability to take on men AND integrate into the team structure is such an advantage. I haven’t even mentioned his shooting prowess.

Clearly I am now a huge fan and I’m happy to accept he will often enough try to do too much. Anyone who saw Jinky would tell you it didn’t always work for him!

Really hope he signs on …..but nothing to do with his name and I doubt there are any who think that’s important at all.

The language, tone and general argument in article from Paul on the SNP government struck me as extremely odd -I don’t remember never read this obvious political bias. It sounds straight from the text of a piece by Labour for Celtic on Twitter. The Law undoubtedly needs to be changed but an article demonising SNP as anti Celtic is harking back to a time in the 1960’s when SNP were not trusted by Celtic fans in general. This has undoubtedly changed and my sense is that this article will be widely criticised on here for being a piece of overt political propaganda unworthy of CQN

If Paddy Roberts was called David Roberts I think there would be a lower valuation placed on him by our support.

Mind a similiar clamour to re-sign Patrick Bellamy following an eventful loan?

He scored less goals and had less of an impact at the club than young Roberts.

Did I say Patrick Bellamy, I meant Craig Bellamy of course.

  20. Living as I do in the South part of this Island I tend to be wary of forming opinions when I’m not living day to day in my home city of Glasgow.

There are however issues and circumstances that are easy to form an opinion on through common sense or first hand knowledge/experience.

The odious bull (I know it should be bill) that is the Offensive Behaviour’ Act really is one such case where it’s easy to see how ill conceived legislation has targeted a community unfairly and has indeed been used unjustly to the detriment of those being charged in addition to wasting the time of the courts.

Compare and contrast “Supporters” being charged for wearing t-shirts or singing songs that I assume will be deemed as to be offensive (not looking to start a proscribed organisation debate etc). I say assume as nobody has ever made it clear what is deemed offensive beyond the Famine Song which was declared offensive yet which people singing regularly go unpunished and video evidence shows the Scottish Police ignoring the behaviour.

Contrast that with images of persons dressed as the Pope with a noose round their neck, Adults dressed in Nazi uniforms with minors dressed as holocaust victims and then to round it all off adults dressed in a manner as to suggest abusive behaviours towards children. All there for public consumption but when the Scottish Police and Crown Judiciary look they say nothing to be done. No offense/offence has been committed.

The Government have a lot to answer for as do the Police Scotland whose habitual ignorance/failures to act to the nonsense on display is a disgrace.

Add to that the abject failure of Governance in Scottish Football where you have an executive actively engaged in fraudulant and criminal behaviours (allegedly) and undermining the credibility of our national game.

I really hope to see the bull condemned to the scrap heap and accountability placed firmly on the heads of the enforcement community who have ample powers to arrest and prosecute those engaged in acts or behaviours for which there is no place in a decent and modern day Scotland.

As for the SFA, if ever an organisation needed torn out root and branch then this is it. Regan is clearly unfit for purpose and if any justice is to be had then the asked for Judicial Review must be led by organisations and powers out with his control. I really do hope this goes all the way. Not for title stripping, not for one-upmanship over any other team in the city but rather for truth, transparency and fairness for all clubs.
