There is no point bleating that tonight’s Europa League final is the weakest imaginable, Newco are there because they are good enough to eliminate two German sides and a few weaker opponents. If they win, fair play to them, they deserve their day in the sun. I expect them to lose.
Either way, the outcome will determine relative financial strength in Scottish football. This season Newco will return an operating profit for the first time in their history. Sales of Patterson to Everton and the management team to Aston Villa, already ensured a bumper year. The run to a European final could make them the highest earners in Scotland, eclipsing Celtic in this regard for the first time. It will bestow no more than a stay of execution to a side with gaping structural deficiencies.
The importance of Celtic winning the league this season cannot be overstated. Irrespective of what happens across the city, access to Champions League income ensures our place at the top of the income chart is virtually assured next season. If we are there alone from Scotland, the benefits Newco gain from this season will seem no more than a dead cat bounce. If two clubs are there, we compete on equal terms, against a team spending from income, not debt.
It’s all about the money, nothing else determines long-term outcomes.

I remember going back to Asia in 2003 (where we lived at that time), after being in Seville then coming back to Scotland and losing the league by a single goal.
The emptiness lived with me for months- a season with nothing after all that promise.
At least we didn’t lose on penalties!

EF should have been out of sight by then. Any decent team would have been.
The narrative will be that the plucky Gers lost in a heartbreaking but classic European final.
Truth is neither team deserved to win.
EF were really poor.
What a state German football must be in if that mob can beat two of their teams and take a third to penalties when they aren’t even – officially – the best team in this little place.

How will the Seville defeat affect the the huns team and supporters.
After our Seville defeat I was absolutely devastated and never ever watched the game my wife had taped for me.
I enjoyed our journey to Seville, but defeat mentally drained me and the next season was hard , very hard to get motivated.
It was the end of an era for us and MON left in May 2005.
There is no doubt this huns defeat will have massive ramifications.
Hopefully the temporary CQN infatuation with the huns is over and we call all get back to all things Celtic and beyond.

What a shame for sevco tonight. I was truely sad to see them pick up losers medals again. They have been a breath of fresh and we should all be grateful for their efforts, don’t you know!!! I just hope that sevco supporters now leave sunny Spain the way they found it but i will not hold my breath. God bless EF.
