It’s all about the money

909

There is no point bleating that tonight’s Europa League final is the weakest imaginable, Newco are there because they are good enough to eliminate two German sides and a few weaker opponents.  If they win, fair play to them, they deserve their day in the sun.  I expect them to lose.

Either way, the outcome will determine relative financial strength in Scottish football.  This season Newco will return an operating profit for the first time in their history.  Sales of Patterson to Everton and the management team to Aston Villa, already ensured a bumper year.  The run to a European final could make them the highest earners in Scotland, eclipsing Celtic in this regard for the first time.  It will bestow no more than a stay of execution to a side with gaping structural deficiencies.

The importance of Celtic winning the league this season cannot be overstated.  Irrespective of what happens across the city, access to Champions League income ensures our place at the top of the income chart is virtually assured next season.  If we are there alone from Scotland, the benefits Newco gain from this season will seem no more than a dead cat bounce.  If two clubs are there, we compete on equal terms, against a team spending from income, not debt.

It’s all about the money, nothing else determines long-term outcomes.

But each to their own … if you or JHB are not Celtic fans I commend your indefatigably

    —-

I have need to overstate my impeccable Celtic credentials – I have a mind of my own and I call it as I see it.

I do respond to reasoned replies – I have been back & forward with you a couple of times. I have genuine interest in opposing views – but I won’t get into a dog-fight and trade insults. I post only what I would be happy to say face to face, if need be.

Those who shout the loudest and get their pals to ‘pile in’ on their playground jibe “you cannae be a Celtic supporter”, are no better Celtic supporters than I – “sticks & stones…..etc”

Honesty, I would really be worried if some ever agreed with me…..we are different types with differing views…..c’est la vie.

  2. Apologies JHB

I have previously stated you’ve always been courteous to myself … I do detect sometimes a wish to move the subject on to something else … but I suppose that’s what any blog is about … still wary about your Celtic credentials… but quite easily you might think an an eijit

When it’s Celtic related nobody should complain

Hope you had your Frankfurt top on tonight

The Huns not going straight into the CL helps Celtic :-)

Which should please ever Celtic fan

  3. Stone wall penalty tonight …

If not a penalty it can’t be a corner

    Goldson didn’t touch the ball

2mins later centre hang slips .. Aribo scores (his last goal before going to Villa) … Sliippy Gee will understand how the Frankfurt Bhoy felt … well apart from the Frankfurt Bhoy still got a medal

    Happy days

I bought an Eintracht Frankfurt pennant 43 years ago in Germany.

Got it out of a box of memorabilia Wed morning, hoping it would bring good luck.

If only I’d realised I also bought a Dortmund one too, I could have looked it out weeks ago and maybe saved a lot of fretting !

  5. SPIKEYSAULDMAN

    That’s braw.

That said, there was no fretting here. Was looking forward to them losing to possibly the worst team they have faced. Showed that in a large part they rode their luck. Like many I wanted a spot kick defeat. They should have been 3 down in first half.

They ain’t as good as some would make you believe.

Was weird though. The game was on CBS Sport here and to hear their songs in my living room was awful. I sent out a work email to explain what the songs translated to.

Yes, I have a few yank friends that know the game and watch and understand that I can email. They ain’t all clowns.

    What a week.

  6. My wee Europa final memory tonight

Wife & stepdaughters out watching the “final”

Gets to penalties and am crapping maself, MissGFTB is on her phone checking flash scores while am watching BT … she is 30secs ahead and when she shouts “they’ve missed” I started jumping about like an idiot, I then said calm down Frankfurt might miss .. then the wee yin shouts “we’ve scored” … I didn’t realise I had convinced her we were Frankfurt fans am just hoping in her 13yrs on this planet that Celtic are us and every team facing the Huns are we :-) … my job is done

Am I right in saying that not only have old firm fc got to play CL qualifying rounds, lost the pot 1 seeding but also handed 5 million quid to Celtic?

    Delicious!

  8. SLÁINTE ANGE 1.27am

I think the “pot” is only Celtics I’d they don’t make the group stages … if they win tonight they would have been straight in therefore effecting Scotland’s pot

For now … they will have one or two qualifiers

    Happy days 🍀

  9. Splendid viewing on BT Sport last night where wee Rory almost roared himself hoarse, but the clearly hungover Huns couldn’t lift their favourites. Celtic paid Hamilton for his pandemic commentaries, what a waste of time and money that was?.

What a kick in the balls, a boot in the head turned out to be and the bloodied Eintracht captain barely recovered despite miraculously staying on the pitch. Lundstrom does Dallas and didn’t even raise a Madden scowl.

It had to be a slip for Sevco’s goal, but not decisive tonight Josephine, a victory over 90 minutes was predictably precluded with no rancid return in Govan. Celtic’s new Columbian favourite legend Rafael Santos Borre dinked a wee Larsson, and the tea was masking.

Delicious irony that five penalties to Rainjurz was one too many and Annan Ramsey reduced Tav Pen to tears.

I do not expect them to qualify for the group stages.

    Happy days indeed!

The have down well in Europe but am over the moon they don’t go straight in … I still can’t see many Celtic supporters wanting a misfired of Jack, Lundstram @ Kamara … but trust me if they had won that penalty shite out (sic) they would have been the better than Murdoch Auld & Hay …. In the eyes “our” media

Hopefully play our cards right and squeeze what’s left of life out of der hun newco filth.

  13. Two things went in the huns’ favour last night. They went first at penalties. Always go first as even if you miss, there’s pressure on the other team to score. The penalties were into the hun end, which should also have been an advantage. I’ve seen us distract the kicker and see them miss, with our fans behind goal going ape-shit as whoever lined up to take the kick. Last night, the huns never moved. In fact, you hardly heard them for most of the night, whilst Eintracht fans were far more vocal. I only watched the 90 minutes and thought Eintracht were slightly the better team in first half and even more so, once the huns scored. I still.expect the huns to win on Saturday but it ain’t making up for last night. Hopefully Seville is still intact.
