It’s all about the money

There is no point bleating that tonight’s Europa League final is the weakest imaginable, Newco are there because they are good enough to eliminate two German sides and a few weaker opponents.  If they win, fair play to them, they deserve their day in the sun.  I expect them to lose.

Either way, the outcome will determine relative financial strength in Scottish football.  This season Newco will return an operating profit for the first time in their history.  Sales of Patterson to Everton and the management team to Aston Villa, already ensured a bumper year.  The run to a European final could make them the highest earners in Scotland, eclipsing Celtic in this regard for the first time.  It will bestow no more than a stay of execution to a side with gaping structural deficiencies.

The importance of Celtic winning the league this season cannot be overstated.  Irrespective of what happens across the city, access to Champions League income ensures our place at the top of the income chart is virtually assured next season.  If we are there alone from Scotland, the benefits Newco gain from this season will seem no more than a dead cat bounce.  If two clubs are there, we compete on equal terms, against a team spending from income, not debt.

It’s all about the money, nothing else determines long-term outcomes.

BBC Scotland, particularly Goodlad, hurting really badly. Other reveals all his pals are in Seville.

    Happy days :-) 🏆🍀

  3. That was a shockingly bad game of football last night. So technically poor. The Conference final should be a lot better.

PS Final line from the Celtic fan anchor on Virgin last night was

‘in the city of oranges, Rangers are singing the blues’

  4. Whoever ends up in their group will have the best connections to the EUFA Fixtures committee.

I still cannot believe there are 7 teams worse than them in the top flight of German football.

They played like the Harlem Globetrotters — all flicks / tricks / Hollywood but no passing.

  5. the long wait is over on

Just a wee reminder for any this morning getting the “if only Kent had taken that chance the trophy was ours” narrative.

    No.

Roofe clearly runs the ball our before crossing – even the worst VAR in Europe would have chalked that off.

I’m pleased to report that the anomaly in the Force that was detected recently has passed without further incident.

    Enjoy your day.

  7. Good grief, the BBC girl just mentioned the L word. Same one who spoke about administration yesterday, had same line today but added Liquidation.

Still think the huns will win on Saturday but I’m not that bothered. A bit like, pissed off if the huns win v less pissed off if the minis win. Won’t be any consultation after last night, which was on track to be a greater achievement than the first moon landing.

  8. Rangers fans brawl in Glasgow after Europa League final loss as woman dragged across road by hair

The mass fight broke out in Glasgow city centre shortly before midnight – just hours after the Ibrox side lost 5-4 in penalties.

It happened in Jamiaca Street, and around 12 Huns kicking feck outta each other.

    They just cant help themselves.

    LOL

    HH.

Though VAR failed badly, again, in a critical match. A clear penalty was missed.

  10. Yeah at risk of sounding churlish, that was a poor final. Barca and Dortmund should be ashamed of themselves. I can only guess that teams that qualify for the CL through their league don’t attach as much importance to the Europa league as perhaps the likes of Frankfurt do. But still, the sight of a team finishing with Sakala, Sands, Davis and Arfield almost winning a European final is hard to to get your head around.

  11. The Huns are playing in the ” Scottish CONSOLATION Cup this Saturday

I wonder IF Mr Ramsey will get to take a Penalty ?

    Picinisco,

    Fair enough but…

Hard hat on – I dont think that was a penalty.

seen them given of course but if that was given against us I’d be furious

  14. celticforever on

I was watching the final in Oslo last night where I work

and the first thing a totally neutral Norwegian commentator

said at the half time break was that Lundstrom should have

been sent off for kick to the head

That foul and numerous other fouls plus Mad hun refusing to

book him during our cup semi against thems leads me to believe

he must be invisible or seen as some kind of saint

Anyway right result in the end

    Forza Frankfurt

My initial thought was penalty to Frankfurt and other angles

actually confirmed what I thought although I was watching

    with green tinted specs

Maybe my bias increased my opinion that it was a Frankfurt penalty

  16. Weebobbycollins on

I’m sure you can recall the images of 2003 in Seville. Plazas absolutely packed with Celtic fans. Can anyone show us a similar photo from yesterday? No! It just didn’t happen. There were never 100,000 orcs in Seville.

    Seville saved…

And post game they were so disappointed and exhausted after a long hot day of drinking, hence they simply left, tail between the legs and went on their way, no remaining energy to pick fights.

The BBC report is really trying to stay soo positive…with quotes from fans proud etc 😂😂😂😂😂

  18. Nice to see their ” best fans in The Wurrllld” waited to applaud their Team when they were recieving their runners up Medals.

    Almost total exodus.

Positive you say … just got sent a clip from one of their fan media things and seemingly last night was “outcome bias” ??????

The EF player takes a step and then goes down – probably fatal to any claim imho.

still ,all’s well that ends well…

    ;-)

  21. THE LONG WAIT IS OVER on 19TH MAY 2022 9:36 AM

Completely agree. I would have been gutted if such a penalty had been given against us….but, the rules are the way they are precisely so that VAR can function with refs without leaving things to too much interpretation and sentiment. Pens change games and results, so, in the end, I’m glad it wasn’t given!

  22. vinniethedog on

Burnley must have been more than that ..nearly that at the game..!!….don’t know how busy the their fan zone was !

  23. TLWIS @ 9.55

The TFOD2.1 practice for penalties / free kicks — looking for and making the most of any contact as a matter of course.

EF were not practicing for / playing that game — that was the difference last night.

The TFOD2.1 Booster club in the media have their language pre-packed for such situations.

Giving the MIB a decision to make.

    I’ve seen them given.

    Their was contact.

If the roles had been reversed then theTFOD2.1 would have gotten the penalty.

And the commentators would have lauded the MIB / VAR for the decision.

Dutch VAR guy — surely not given the TFOD2.1 manager connection.

I’m with you, what would I enjoy more, EF getting that penalty to finish in 90 minutes or the penalty shootout?

I go for the latter 👏👏👏👏

  25. Penalty all day, Booking for Tav pen ignored for a jersey pull, booking minimum ignored for a high boot from Lundstrum, these change the game cos the rough house tactics are allowed to continue, Eintracht were also very poor when they got to the box.

Why can’t referees and linesmen see the blatant holding that Bassey inflicts on every opponent, it makes him look good he is built like a heavyweight boxer and plays like one, their goal again reminiscent of Abada’s and Jota’s against them ball watching where it matters on the 6 yard line, well done Eintracht you deserved it, refereeing was woeful a hand picked Dallas cowboy.

  26. Talksport … Jim White live from Malaga

    :-) :-) :-)

Their “prize” now is the fans behaved … imagine the only triumph you have is actually being a normal human being

    Happy days

The Huns will now try and add the “behaving normal” cup to their stars

  27. Strange lack of pictures coming from Seville.

I found the whole thing strangely low key compared to 2003 and even their invasion of Manchester in 2008.

Maybe thats because I’m almost 20 years older and a tiny bit wiser!

Or maybe it’s because of the standards?

We lost to a team who went on to win the CL the following season, a manager who cleaned up in England and won major honours over the galloping decade, players who went to top clubs and dud the business at club and international level.

Anyone believe Frankfurt will win the CL next year with the same squad? Nope, me neither.

Well done to Frankfurt but to lose to a team who wouldn’t have qualified for Europe from their own domestic league must be really frustrating.

I also saw a stat that Celtic have a better win rate in Europe this season than the zombies. And that the zombies won only one away game during their run to the final. It was an outlier year for the Europa league final. Two teams who ultimately struggled domestically, beat some big names on the way who were not at their best etc

Oh and VAR. I am very worried that we now have even more opportunity for corrupt officials to deny us. Very worried indeed.
