It’s all about the money

909

There is no point bleating that tonight’s Europa League final is the weakest imaginable, Newco are there because they are good enough to eliminate two German sides and a few weaker opponents.  If they win, fair play to them, they deserve their day in the sun.  I expect them to lose.

Either way, the outcome will determine relative financial strength in Scottish football.  This season Newco will return an operating profit for the first time in their history.  Sales of Patterson to Everton and the management team to Aston Villa, already ensured a bumper year.  The run to a European final could make them the highest earners in Scotland, eclipsing Celtic in this regard for the first time.  It will bestow no more than a stay of execution to a side with gaping structural deficiencies.

The importance of Celtic winning the league this season cannot be overstated.  Irrespective of what happens across the city, access to Champions League income ensures our place at the top of the income chart is virtually assured next season.  If we are there alone from Scotland, the benefits Newco gain from this season will seem no more than a dead cat bounce.  If two clubs are there, we compete on equal terms, against a team spending from income, not debt.

It’s all about the money, nothing else determines long-term outcomes.

A wee reminder to all, meeting at 8 Ball pool hall, above Scotia Bar 12 midday. All welcome, no exceptions. Just like Glasgow Celtic.

    all fair points,

    “Dutch VAR guy ”

    Didn’t realise that.

That can’t be right given their obvious and publicly stated connection with and affection for all things Dutch.

That is why they have all those orange strips – isn’t it..?

  3. I wasn’t going to watch the Scottish cup final but I might now.

Is it too much to ask that they lose it on penalties?

I’d also take Hearts playing out of their skins and battering them by 4 or 5 but that ain’t happening.

I’ll get all my thoughts on the Zombies out of the way just now.

They’ve got a rebuild on this summer. They’ve got a Mike Ashley sized bill in the post. They’ve got a former chairman looking for his money back.

What might have been a long happy summer for them is now a pretty uncertain regretful one.

    Delicious

  4. I couldn’t really care about the SC final. I want them to lose but we all know last night was massive. Win or lose the SC, it’s forgotten about in a month. Last night would have been spoken about for decades had they managed it. We’ve a great summer to look forward to.

  5. Maybe Ashley will swap his bill for the club, what else can they do if they cant pay it?

Thanks for that. Of course I knew the outcome but I still enjoyed it :-))

PS What say all those chaps now who were predicting a riot?

  7. I really don’t want them to win on Saturday.

1 trophy with no fans in 11 years is enough.

Their lack of getting over the line in cups is a good thing to be continued.

Negative momentum to be turned around in the vital qualifiers in August is a big challenge.

We know how sickening watching them win a treble in our Seville year was. We had the ability to turn that around. We did not have to manage the squad rebuild for a further 12 months. They will have to do that now.

For me I will be kicking every ball for the Jambos on Saturday.

  8. BRRB @ 10.38

Thanks for the invitation but I cannot make it.

Snowed under on far too many fronts so I will have to pass.

Hope you have a good day / you get a good turnout.

Discuss Gullane Sands if things go quiet — the moons are aligning.

Plus asthma and TUE’s in sport.

    Finally — growth agenda.

  9. The VAR decision not to award a pen against Goldson is something I hope UEFA are looking at today. Every commentator on BBC thought it was a pen and that’s telling you something. A shocker of a call witch thankfully didn’t cost Frankfurt.

  10. GENE on 19TH MAY 2022 10:53 AM

    Absolutely mate.

It’s just in the grand scheme of things, last night was their Stalingrad defeat. Everything turns from here regardless of what happens on Saturday.

Maybe I’m a bad person but I want them to lose every game.

    Doesn’t make me a bigot.

It’s a natural part of being a football fan when you have a huge rival.

Do Spurs want Arsenal to lose every game and vice versa? 100%

Do Barcelona want Real Madrid to lose every game and vice versa? 100%

I could go on ( and on).

I can’t stand the false bonhomie that’s required of being a Celtic fan ( and no doubt of their fans too in reverse) of pretending to want them to win for “the good of Scottish football” or some other nonsense because some people conflate football rivalry with all the other nonsense that’s perceived to be being part of “the Old Firm”.

I have beloved friends , family , colleagues who are Rangers fans and I feel for them on a personal level after last night but I have too much respect for them to pretend that I want Rangers to win any game.

They feel the same way about us and I don’t have the slightest problem with it.

  12. JL attempted decapitation — does anyone check studs before a game?

Given the scale of the injury I would be looking for a sharp edge on his studs.

Still cannot believe that he was not sent of — reckless endangerment at the very least.

Do that in the street and it is 6 months away.

  13. I was glad that the predicted ‘Riot In Seville’ did not materialise -It would have been in no one’s interest.

I was pleased with the result of the game for ‘Celtic reasons’. *Rangers were the unluckier of two mediocre/ workmanlike sides, and should have won. The game was played in a good spirit. I hope that we are in the same position very soon, but of course with a different outcome.

Finally, I thought BT’s coverage was straightforward & fair – no complaints there.

  14. Big prize in offer for Tav Pen this weekend with a chance to match Celtic club legend Jean joel perrier doumbe’s Scottish cup winners medal haul.

What a truly bad attitude you demonstrate. In this modern age that is a really poor, shameful, immature point of view…

but one I concur with wholeheartedly :-)

  18. I’m just seeing highlights this morning. How dies VAR not conclude that lundstrum recklessly endangers another player (actually causes serious physical damage) and therefore send him off? Surely retrospective ban on the way?

How does VAR conclude that Goldson doesn’t trip a player in the box and therefore give a penalty?

These were not marginal decisions that could have gone either way.

Honestly I have the fear about VAR in Scotland and I am convinced that Dallas has serious influence in European refereeing circles. Masons don’t just operate in Scotia you know!

  21. Only 2 weeks until the Scotland v Ukraine game. Will we be pantomime villains?

Ralston has to be in the squad I think; Patterson has had no game time

Expect McGregor, Taylor to be in there. Possibly Forrest and Turnbull too late back from injury to feature. Nations league is more likely for their return

  24. Just back fae taking my sister’s dug a wee walk, anyone who thinks last nights result doesn’t matter to Celtic fans in my opinion is way off the mark, couple of neighbours on different streets out doing their garden both utter the words “thank eff they didn’t win last night” one said “never been so nervous watching beat the chasers” then as I go between schemes one delivery DPD driver pumps the horn with a smile and a clenched fist, then two cars slow down one with a “Hail Hail” and the other with “Mon the hoops” lol nciousky my hooped Celtic top brought the reaction from the 3 people I don’t know and obviously both neighbours support the same team as us … but in my wee survey 100% felt the exact wee as me today ….

You have posted several times about your suspicions regarding the physiques of the Rangers players. I wholeheartedly agree with you. I’ve been saying the same to my family and mates for over a year.

When I look at the change in physique of the likes of Tavernier, Goldson, Jack, Kent, Kamara from what they looked like a couple of seasons ago, I find it difficult to believe that the transformation came about solely due to weightlifting and exercise. The rage you often see on McGregor’s face too when a forward comes too close too him when challenging for a ball also makes me wonder. It reminds me of the behaviour of Maradona at the World Cup he was expelled from.

  27. Heyy Timland! Off to see my sister in (hopefully) sunny Inverness as a very happy tim.

Knowing Dr Amber has been a blessing to me. His spells are incredible with no side effects. I suffered from brain cancer for years with a lot of bills piled up on my neck. I play the lottery hoping that someday I will win big to clear up my debts, live the good life that I’ve always dreamt of. I was referred to Dr Amber by a friend of mine in South Africa telling me that he can help me win the lottery. I had a chat with Dr Amber about winning the lottery and he was so confident about his work that made me believe in him knowing fully well that he has been helpful to other people. He did a reading for me that made it clear to him that I was going to become a winner after he had prepared the spell for me. He told me the exact ticket to pick and I was declared the winner of ONE MILLION DOLLARS at the “Double Your Money” instant lottery game. I don’t know what you seek for but Dr Amber can help you.
