It’s only a flesh wound. King goes Full Python

1151

Celtic hammered Newco 5-1 home and away last season, knocked them out both cups, won one other game and conceded a late equaliser, allowing Newco their only moment of (cough) glory last season.

We finished 39 points ahead of Newco (who were 33 points from bottom). As we set off for the summer, glowing after the first invincible treble in history, chairman of Newco, that complete muppet Dave King, told the assembled media, “In footballing terms I don’t think Celtic are as far ahead as they could have been – certainly with our new signings.”

The two 5-1 defeats now look like Python’s Black Knight losing his legs one at a time, but protesting they were little more than flesh wounds. Except Python was a parody, this guy is being serious!

So, Brendan, Peter, Dermot, get the finger out. These people don’t believe 5-1 is a substantial enough winning margin. When we pitch up at Ibrox on the weekend of 23/24 September, ‘go Medieval on their ass’ to borrow from Quentin.

Take five minutes to update yourself on The Road to Lisbon cyclists, who traveled from Celtic Park to Estadio Nacional last month.

This has been a phenomenal and inspiring effort by a group of Celtic fans – and so many donors.  What a great thing to be a part of.

Thanks DD much appreciated, that’ll be my 10:56 post that has been deleted along with BMCUW’s post regarding one of the individuals I cited. Funny old thing that.

Seems to be rule for some on here and not for others.

Have a great weekend everybody, yes that includes YOU trolls and Mods as well.

  3. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Pog, I just noticed your 10.56 post was deleted about some posters on here who for whatever reason (s) are not the most popular.

  4. Myself personally wouldent want to listen to a bunch of dobs for 90 minutes, it’ll be an orange fest of hatred against Catholics and anything or anyone Irish, I’d be as far away from it as possible, it would be like going a walk through Glasgow Green on orange walk day here, no different at all, and to pay to get in and listen to it at a stadium in the orange quarter Belfast, you must be joking, naaaa not for me I’m afraid, CFC done the right thing to take nothing to do with it in my opinion.

  5. Afternoon all

Did not see Radiohead last night- I am more of a Laurence Welk fan these days so Thom and his boys are a bit ‘modern’ for me but I thought ole Neganon’s post about them was just him at his most deliberately grumpy a la the cat whose real name is Tardar Sauce.

Now to Fopp and see if they have any Paul Whiteman.

  9. Yep they can dig them up, it’s a new one on me but who am I argue it?

Rangers could make up to £5m this season from the sale of their replica kits after renegotiating their merchandising deal with Sports Direct, according to Dr Peter Rohlmann, an expert on football shirt sales.

No really my scene rock music mate, I am happy Jazzer at heart, with a sprinkling of soul!!

Got a lot of good quips this morning as I walked through Dalyan market with my Jock Stein Tshirt. Won’t be long till they’re selling genuine fake ones!

As for beer, Efes is rather fine, fruit cider is available but costs more, local cider, Vincent, is also good but dearer than beer.

As for currency converting, definitely best bet to take English money and change at post office, PTT.

BCW – Noticed the bhoy from Marmaris Celtic Bar at Dalyan Market – if I had known you were in town I would have sent him back with an Efes for you.

This area of Turkey is just magic. Enjoy

I’m always puzzled to read of Orange Walks.

Living in Drogheda, the scene of the Battle of the Boyne. There is a Summer Fair in the grounds of St Peter’s Church of Ireland, today. It will be attended by anyone who fancies a Saturday afternoon out. Christians, Muslims, non believers, the old and the young, anyone and everyone.

St Peter’s was also the infamous scene in 1649 where Cromwell’s men set fire to the wooden spire of the church where around 100 had taken refuge seeking sanctuary. Many jumped to their deaths others died in the fire.

Estimates vary but 2,000 to 4,000 citizens of Drogheda were killed by Cromwell’s men on the 11th of September 1649 (our 9/11). Men, women, children, Catholics and Protestants were slaughtered. For those not killed slavery in Bermuda was also introduced by Cromwell.

Catholic clerics described the scene in the town…

‘unparalleled savagery and treachery beyond any slaughterhouse’.

Later in 1670. Saint Oliver Plunkett established a Jesuit School in Drogheda, ‘for the education of Catholics and Protestants’. Oliver Plunkett’s family had owned land at the nearby Beaulieu (which had been ‘taken’ from the Plunkett’s by Sir Henry Tichborne…He was .a prominent figure in the previous Siege of Drogheda of 1641. Tichborne was also a Commissioner for the Plantation of Derry…His ancestors live peacefully there now and operate a Vintage Car Museum in the large period house next to St Fechins, GAA Club).

St Oliver was arrested and moved to London and tried in dubious circumstances for High Treason. Oliver was executed in 1681. Prior to his arrest, St Oliver had taken refuge in a place townland called Killarty, Clogherhead.

Next up here was 1690 and the Battle of the Boyne here, which is now largely forgotten. The Orange Order have purchased land on the battlesight but nobody here thinks about those days now. The vast majority of folk here have never actually seen an Orangeman, Orange Walk or a Freemason for that matter. There was once a large Obelisk built on the Boyne battle field. Lord Sackville laid the first stone in homage to King Billy’s victory over his Father in Law. The obelisk was reduced to rubble in an explosion in 1923.

After St Oliver’s execution his remains returned to the Drogheda and were looked after by the nuns in Siena Convent. During the War of Independence an armed guard of IRA Volunteers, secretly protected Saint Oliver’ remains from desecration by the Crown Forces and in particular the Black and Tans.

So, with all of this carnage here over the centuries and especially the 17th Century it can be puzzling to read of Orange parades in Edinburgh and the Six Counties. This afternoon I can stand in the grounds of St Peters (COI) and gaze up at the spire during a Summer Fair, while listening to the laughter of children. Today’s children in Drogheda include refugees from the carnage in the Middle East. I can also spare a moment to think of 1641, the horror of Cromwell in 1649 and then think of what was to come 41 years later to the town.

Tough times followed the Battle of the Boyne.

The Rising of 1798. Robert Emmet in 1803. The genocide of An Gorta Mor. The Land War. The Fenians. The Invincibles. The War of Independence. Civil War. The failings of the Catholic Church. The armed and political struggle for the Six Counties, poverty, emigration, recession and so on.

Thanks to the bravery of the many generations since Pope Adrain IV’s Laudabiliter of 1155 legitimised the later Anglo Norman Invasion of Ireland. Cromwell and King Billy have gone for good. Their form of sectarianism has left this part of Ireland, hopefully never to return. Westminster left and took it’s sectarianism with it.

    As St Oliver famously stated upon the Jury’s verdict ;

    “Deo Gratias”

    (Thanks be to God).

St Oliver’s relics now rest peacefully in the nearby St Peter’s, Catholic Church, Drogheda.

  21. Paul,

It is all good stuff mocking King.
