It’s over, Mr Johnston, you let your club die

449

Former chairman of Oldco Rangers, now director of Newco, Alastair Johnston, took aim in the media at Celtic supporters yesterday, saying “I always wondered about the mentality of certain Celtic supporters, not by any means most of them, who basically said our club died in February, 2012.”

Why do they do this to themselves?  If it is an attempt to convince people that liquidation did not happen, it will fail.  All that will be achieved is the re-telling of the facts.  Rangers entered administration on 14 February 2012.  It failed to come out of administration and a liquidator was appointed to dispose of the remaining assets.

Secvo Scotland Ltd bought a “bundle of assets”, including the stadium.  The administrators, Duff and Phelps, changed Rangers name to RFC 2012 Ltd and gave permission to Sevco Scotland to use the word “Rangers” in their name.  Without this permission, Newco would have gone through a similar naming process as Clydebank – Airdrie United – Airdrieonians, who were only permitted to use the word “Airdrieonians” 11 years after the liquidation of oldco Airdrieonians.

If I’m honest, if we were in those circumstances, I would tell myself every day that the Celtic I grew up with was the same as Newco Celtic.  I would have no incentive to do otherwise, so Johnston and anyone else who cares, can think what they want about Newco.

He is welcome to his thoughts, if it helps him through the trauma of what he did as chairman of Oldco during the EBT years, and the club’s failure to prepare over many years for HMRC’s legal challenge. Johnston’s board made no provision to retain enough money to trade through HMRC’s challenge, despite that legal challenge being underway years before it got to the crunch.

What he tells himself does not change the facts.  Oldco is in liquidation.  All player contracts ceased.  Assets were sold off, a deal to use the name had to be agreed.  Sevco Scotland became an associate member of the SFA while Oldco was still a member.  Oldco voted on whether to admit Sevco Scotland to the SPL.  Sevco changes its name and were granted entry to the SFL Third Division.

Johnston played a role in the demise of Rangers.  He was chairman and had a responsibility to direct the club away from dangers.  He failed and now presents an alternative reality, which is easier on the mind.

He also said, “it will be 120 years or so before you can tie with us.”  For each of those 120 years, Celtic fans and others will say, “But Rangers died in 2012”.  Just as Rangers fans are content to believe their club continues, belligerent denial is not going to change how others regard liquidation.  It’s over, Mr Johnston, you let your club die.

There was other guff about “thriving” not “surviving”.  They think they are going to win the league and that their circa £11m annual deficit is an indication of thriving.  Again, I disagree.

    JOBO BALDIE @ 1:08 PM,

“…‘first’ AD year was Year 1 then then the end of the 1st decade was the end of 0010….

    =======================================================================

No sir. The start of year 0010 .

The end of a decade in the life of a person is the start of one`s tenth year. Not the end of it.

ie. the day of one`s tenth birthday , not the end of that year.

Birthday in Spanish Cumpleanos. ie ” completed years ” may better explain it .

  2. I beleive you can draw parallels with what is happening in u.s with trump and Fox news and over here with the Scottish media and sevco.

Trump brazenly lies because he knows his supporters only watch Fox news and he will not be challenged by Fox news. He can make the most outrageous lies and claims and his supporters believe it all.

Johnston can make also lie and make outrageous statements because he knows no one in this country will challenge him.

After rangers were liquidated Walter smith wished the new club every success. A fortnight later he was claiming that rangers had been demoted. He knew he wouldn’t be challenged.

I would urge every celtic supporter to turn their backs on the Scottish media. Tv, radio and the newspaper industry. They all have an anti celtic agenda. I take my news from the BBC in London, channel 4 and CNN.

  4. CANAMALAR @ 4:41 PM,

While I agree with you on the point that Alistair Johnston was trying to make and that the Celtic hierarchy did everything they reasonably could to facilitate this. You won’t get AJ or the rest of them stating it’s the same Club, they’re too well drilled for that…

    They use euphenisms:

“But the reality is Rangers survived and not only did they survive, they started to thrive again.

They shoot down “facts” that few accuse them off…

“I always wondered about the mentality of certain Celtic supporters, not by any means most of them, who basically said our club died in February, 2012.

Of course they didn’t die in February, who said they did.!? They went into administration, they were then liquidated after the end if the season at the end of June.

No the fact is only the diehards and uninformed believe the same club stuff.

Sevco Rangers is a continuation of Oldco Rangers, by way of several deceits. 5wa et al.

Q: If Alistair Johnston believes Rangers are the same Club he Chaired, why doesn’t he state they are the “same club”?

A: Cause legally it’s not and he know’s it’s not

My view of his comments… twofold… venting ten years of guilt and frustration while putting extra pressure on Celtic, stirring up the old firm rivalry.

The main reason IMO – Rangers have one more battle to win (it should be a walk over for them), it’s this, if/when Sevco win their first major trophy they will want that win to be added to oldco’s total…

    Championships 54

    SFA Cups 33

    League Cups 27

If we can stop them doing that, we stop the continuity myth.

If we don’t the last piece of the jigsaw is in place and Rangers continuity is then a reality:(((

I wouldn`t go into the Biblical area . Too complicated for me.

    I`m well outgunned there.

It was just the ” end of a decade ” suggestion.

  11. The tactics were poor and for the second time they managed to swamp the middle and look decent. They play the same way every week so we were not caught cold. The old saying you don’t take a knife into a gun fight.

We should always match up in the middle of the pitch, it’s a key area and even very poor teams get joy when you allow them to outnumber you. My preference would be to vary our formation across 431(free)2, 433 or 352 dependent of other teams relative strengths. In all cases out width should come from our fullback/ wingbacks or attackers running the channels.

Lennon gets paid a bucket load to select the team, formation and style of play and he made a poor selection against sevco. I am all for signing better players but it will count for nothing if we don’t use them as we should.

Jamsie had a stinker and I won’t defend that, however Lenny was telling /shouting at him, to stay narrow during the game. He was following his, managers instructions which begs the question, why not play Ntcham in middle?

Yes, it’s the way they’ve played the game all the way through. It works though.

The idea he was Chairman of a wonderfully run Club that just one three in a row and in eight months some carpet bagger had ruined 140 years of cherished dignity is laughable in some ways but really it is a complete and total disgrace.

    CORKCELT @ 6:33 PM,

Yes, I’m with you, they are ready to rubber stamp this…

  15. Chairbhoy – Yep, I’ve banged on about this for years…………

    The Bible .

    Who`s Bible ?

    :-)

The King James Version used today was updated in 1769, with spelling changes and some more modern phrasing. It has been estimated that there were approximately 100000 (one hundred thousand) changes!

The most popular translation of the bible prior to the King James Version was the Geneva Bible. King James was the only reason why the KJV was so popular for so many years instead of the Geneva Bible.

    History ? I really couldn`t say .

When I first joined this Blog more than 10 years ago, we all more or less agreed “win the midfield, win the game”.

Why doesn’t the manager see that?

  18. Is this the same Johnston who went to court and ring-fenced around £400k as he knew his (then) club – not company – were going bust? Aye, a veritable fountain of rectitude.

    HH

  19. chairbhoy

Once more on the money. I doubt if any of us thought Celtic would ever equal Big Jock’s/Billy’s 9 in a row, though the Martin/Gordon era could well have achieved it apart from EBTs, masonic referees and players taking bribes. As noted the same club myth means that they are always ‘going for 55’ whereas we are on the verge of our own record. Of course the completion of the liquidation process might just put a different slant on the myth. As would another league title for the Bhoys. Lot a diggers in the ranks, time to dig deep.

How many managers have you ever known to admit they got their tactics wrong … honestly interested if you could name a few, especially managers who have won things

    Philbhoy 7.06pm

Hope you are getting back to full fitness, but if “winning the midfield” was as easy as saying it am sure we could all be “fitba managers” … my kid on “fitba manager” view is, like many Celtic fans The Tav was one of their weaker defensive players Mikey J got the nod… even though Mikey is a terrific young player who will hopefully have many Celtic v Sevco (for AJ purposes) victories but at this point he has been hung out to dry by both Brendan & Neil in the last year (in my opinion) … I also think young Frimpong was as culpable as Bolingoli at times, again a young Bhoy who some have already elevated to hero status after a dozen (first team) games in his career, not fair on the Bhoy at all….

But again Neil Lennon seems an easy target for some fans/supporters, which is fair enough if they also dish out the plaudits in equal measure, but beating the Sevs in their midden somehow doesn’t suit the narrative when they manage to beat us …. Lazio home & away are massive results this season, the Italian super cup holders haven’t lost since we beat them in Rome (I think that’s correct :-) but all of a sudden this Celtic team & manager have lost all their tactical knowledge & fitba ability …. the Sevs whole season was on the line on the 29th December, ours wasn’t …. sometimes that is the difference on any given day …

Yes, I’ve got a big white leather bound “Catholic Bible”, it’s a family heirloom, with lots of Classic Renaissance Biblical art work. Have been reading it since I could pick it up.

The KJ Bible is a work of literary genius, originally written at the time of Shakespeare, a golden age for the English language. It has many phrases we say today that are part and parcel of our sayings. They of course may be well removed from the original Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic or Latin.

    CELTIC MAC @ 7:28 PM,

Yes this team have an incredible winning mentality that has seen unprecedented success. There was a great interview with Sinky before last seasons Scottish Cup final that personified this.

My worry is, that this attitude is worth another man, if we loose our self belief then it will be tough to pull back from that, that’s why it’s important that we do dig deep. Ones things for sure, we’ve proven we can and our record breaking run continues.
