Jockeying for FTT already done

735

Following RangersTaxCase’s information that Rangers-HMRC First Tier Tribunal report was in the hands of both parties’ solicitors on Friday, I subsequently heard the report runs to in excess of 300 pages.  It will be published by the court authorities in due course but I don’t expect anything this week.  Any attempt to spin or release excerpts from the report could be considered contempt so it is likely that we will hear nothing formally until then.

Once the report goes live you can expect an already-prepared summary with plenty of focus on what the FTT denied HMRC.  HMRC will not achieve a clean sweep, some matters were dealt with correctly, but there will be no surprises on these pages for the thrust of the findings.

I’m looking forward to an entertaining and final dose of bombast from one of the parties, hopefully in keeping with some of the all-time favourites from March 2000, “Rangers are moving on to another level from the rest of Scottish football”, “the Glasgow giants are setting an agenda that no other Scottish club can match”.

That famous article in The Herald asserts “The Ibrox chairman [Sir David Murray] has spent several months and many sleepless nights piecing together the plans which will eliminate Rangers”.

It does, of course, insert the word “debt” into the end of that sentence but sometimes fewer words paint a more accurate picture.  While we’re on a related subject, well done to Sports Direct FC for reaching the summit of the Third Division on goal difference.  That manager’s definitely worth keeping. Ashley’s money is being wisely spent.

  1. Oldest Auschwitz survivor dies aged 108

The oldest known survivor of the Nazi German death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Antoni Dobrowolski, has died at the age of 108.

Official Auschwitz historian Adam Cyra, who works at the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum, said Mr Dobrowolski died in the town of Debno, in north-west Poland.

Mr Dobrowolski, a primary school teacher, ran secret classes during Germany’s brutal World War II occupation of Poland, when the local population was barred from receiving an education.

Arrested in 1942 by the Nazis’ Gestapo secret police, he was first sent to Auschwitz, in annexed Polish territory, and later transferred to Gross Rosen and Sachsenhausen, both in Germany.

He survived until the latter camp was liberated by Soviet and Polish forces in 1945.

Returning to Poland after the war, he first ran a primary school in Debno and then a secondary school.

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the most enduring symbol of the Holocaust, Nazi Germany’s World War II campaign of genocide against Europe’s Jewish population.

After the war’s end in 1945, the prison camp was transformed into a memorial and museum by Poland.

A year after invading Poland in 1939, the Nazis opened what was to become a vast complex on the edge of the southern town of Oswiecim – Auschwitz in German – initially to hold and kill Polish prisoners such as Mr Dobrowolski.

They later expanded it to the nearby village of Brzezinka, or Birkenau, as they took the Holocaust to an industrial scale.

Of the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis during the war, 1 million were murdered at the camp, mostly in its notorious gas chambers, along with tens of thousands of others including Poles, Roma and Soviet prisoners of war.

I see Motherwell’s most famous non-billionaire has broken cover yet again, this time to give an interview to Bill McMurdo of all people (the son of the agent).

    What’s he up to here?

His comments give very little away, but definitely cast doubt on the purpose of Sevco’s original investors. He seems to be doing his best to spook the supporters, or else fire a warning shot across the bows of Ticketus.

What does he gain by undermining the IPO?

Was he promised something from Ahmad when Whyte set him up with the opportunity, a slice of the action? Has Ahmad now reneged on the deal?

Are Sevco’s original investors actually many of those who lost a ton when Ticketus was skelped? Are Ticketus now plaing hard ball on Whyte’s personal guarantee?

I cannot see Whyte benefiting from the IPO failing and so I conclude that he is mischief making. Nothing he has said so far is seismic, but he hints that he has earth moving equipment to hand.

The major issue for those considering investing in Sevco is this:

Is Sevco’s central purpose to build a profitable football business?

    Or

Is it to recover much of the investment that was lost when Ticketus bit the dust?

The answer to that will determine how long the latest pantomime lasts.

  4. Ken Gallacher is now deceased and I’m aware of the old tag, de mortuis nihil nis bonum. But old tags are not necessarily correct tags.

Towards the end of his Glasgow Herald career Mr Gallacher’s articles on rfcaswas were totally uninhibited by any notions of integrity, decency or objectivity. Apart from the one quoted by Paul today, two other articles come to mind. One was a full page hymn of praise to Smith, the manager, in which KG insisted that the Ibrox man was the equal, if not the superior, of Stein, Busby and Shankly. (For sheer slavish sycophancy this piece of prose ought to be studied at journalism schools as an example of how not to do it.) The other article was a a vitriolic personal attack on Fergus for daring to question UEFA on the occasion of John Collins’ transfer to Monaco. It would be hard to come up with a similarly malignant piece from the back pages of any newspaper before or since.

It’s interesting he comes out with that, because I thought his earlier statement clearly blamed Sally.

The fact that it wasn’t picked up by the media clearly irked him,so he decided to go large on it.

  17. Delight as 10 young Celts included in Victory Shield squad

By: Mark Henderson on 22 Oct, 2012 16:48

A TERRIFIC 10 Celtic Youth Academy players have been named in Scotland´s U16 squad for their Sky Sports Victory Shield clash with Northern Ireland on Friday, with one more player on stand-by.

And, remarkably, this means that over half of Mark Wotte´s 20-man squad will comprise of youngsters from the club´s youth set-up.

The young Celts in contention for a place in the starting XI for the game in Dumfries are Conor Cullen, Sam Wardrop, Jack Breslin, Aidan McIlduff, Aidan Nesbitt, Connor McLaren, Steven Boyd, Joe Thompson, Calvin Miller and Ciaran Lafferty. Ryan Caird is on stand-by.

This latest piece of positive news was another indicator of the excellent work going on behind the scenes within the club´s academy.

Celtic´s Head of Youth, Chris McCart, said: “It´s a very positive message for everyone that works in the Academy. The Victory Shield is the highlight for the youth players at international level and the spotlight falls on Academy players from each country, so it´s great that we are represented so strongly.

“When Scotland played in the previous game against Wales at Pittodrie, we had five players who started that game and Ciaran Lafferty also scored in the match, which was great.

“They were a credit then and hopefully we get more starts in this game. It´s a great reflection on the work the Academy coaches and scouts are putting in.”

“Youth development is not about publicity, it´s about putting the hard work in,” he added. “The coaches and scouts are out in all types of weather working really hard, so there is a lot of work going in behind the scenes.

“This age-group falls under Michael O´Halloran and they have come up through the younger age-levels all the way through.

“Michael, along with George McCluskey, has been working with them this year and they will be absolutely delighted, but again, it´s a great reflection on the Academy and staff.”

Many of the players who have been called up were involved in winning the prestigious Nike Cup earlier in this year, which saw the young Hoops overcome the best youth sides in England.

That saw them qualify for the global tournament in Shanghai, China, where they turned in some excellent performance and which was also a valuable learning experience.

“This is the team that won the Nike Cup with the British clubs and went on to represent Britain in China,” said McCart. “It was an excellent achievement and they worked very hard to beat the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool in the final and semi-final, respectively.

“It´s a very good age-group and it’s obviously getting recognised now at international level which is good.”

Contested between the four home nations, the Victory Shield is broadcast live on TV and will be another important part in the youngsters´ football education.

“It´s excellent,” added McCart. “If they want to go and play for Celtic they need to handle playing in stadia in front of crowds and in televised matches and the Victory Shield certainly replicates what we are trying to achieve as part of their development.”

  18. Miku has spoken very well for Celtic in the pre-match press conference, considering he’s only been in Glasgow about a fortnight.

He said he thought Messi is probably the best player ever, but added that Celtic know Barcelona will have 11 great players on the field, no matter what line-up they go with.

Very interestingly, he said that if Barcelona promote a central defender from the youth ranks (he didn’t name Marc Bartra, but his is the name in the frame given all the injuries and the suspension of Busquets) it would be no surprise because Barcelona have always shown themselves willing to bring in the players they have developed.

This is interesting from Miku because I take it he knows, as lots of people do, that Barcelona have been exceptionally reluctant to give a debut to Bartra before Puyol can line up beside him to guide him through. By the way, James Forrest, Tony Watt, Victor Wanyama and Adam Matthews are all younger than Marc Bartra. Tony Watt is four years younger than the guy.

In conclusion, Miku said: “Of course this is a difficult game, against the best team in the world and the best player in the world, but Celtic are a good team too, with good players, and we have come to try to win a point or three points. We have a team that can get something from this game.”

The team may be young but there is quite a lot of international experience there and tomorrow night will be a night to remember for the players. It’s a case of my alltime favourite team against my second favourites and you just can’t beat that.

    • Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi has enjoyed a steady rise through the ranks, being promoted to UEFA’s Premier

category in July 2009 before moving up to Elite status in May of the following year.

    • Born in Florence on 25 August 1973, Rocchi began his refereeing career in Serie C back in 2000, spending the next

three seasons learning his trade in the third tier of Italian football.

    • Stepped up to Serie B in 2003, subsequently also taking charge of top-flight games, Rocchi was given regular

assignments in UEFA competition as a fourth official from 2004/05 onwards, featuring in the group stages of both the

UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup.

    • Handed his first UEFA Cup refereeing assignment at the start of 2008/09, Rocchi took charge of four matches in

total in the competition proper that season and was in the middle for six more in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League.

He finished the season by working as fourth official as Club Atlético de Madrid beat Fulham FC in the final in Hamburg.

    • Often entrusted with some of Serie A’s biggest matches, Rocchi made his UEFA Champions League refereeing

debut in August 2009 when SK Slavia Praha took on FC Sheriff in the third qualifying round and featured in the group

stage for the first time in September 2010 when FC Schalke 04 defeated SL Benfica. In summer 2012, took charge
