Jockeying for FTT already done

735

Following RangersTaxCase’s information that Rangers-HMRC First Tier Tribunal report was in the hands of both parties’ solicitors on Friday, I subsequently heard the report runs to in excess of 300 pages.  It will be published by the court authorities in due course but I don’t expect anything this week.  Any attempt to spin or release excerpts from the report could be considered contempt so it is likely that we will hear nothing formally until then.

Once the report goes live you can expect an already-prepared summary with plenty of focus on what the FTT denied HMRC.  HMRC will not achieve a clean sweep, some matters were dealt with correctly, but there will be no surprises on these pages for the thrust of the findings.

I’m looking forward to an entertaining and final dose of bombast from one of the parties, hopefully in keeping with some of the all-time favourites from March 2000, “Rangers are moving on to another level from the rest of Scottish football”, “the Glasgow giants are setting an agenda that no other Scottish club can match”.

That famous article in The Herald asserts “The Ibrox chairman [Sir David Murray] has spent several months and many sleepless nights piecing together the plans which will eliminate Rangers”.

It does, of course, insert the word “debt” into the end of that sentence but sometimes fewer words paint a more accurate picture.  While we’re on a related subject, well done to Sports Direct FC for reaching the summit of the Third Division on goal difference.  That manager’s definitely worth keeping. Ashley’s money is being wisely spent.

  2. SPL warns Hearts over wage delay

Hearts have been reprimanded and warned by the Scottish Premier League for the delayed payment of September salaries.

The same problem arose this month, with six players and manager John McGlynn receiving their wages six days late.

An SPL disciplinary sub-committee will examine the October breach of their regulations on Wednesday.

Hearts had a transfer embargo imposed for the September offence, which will run until the League is satisfied the problem has been resolved.

The ban on player registrations is not a specific punishment but is now an automatic trigger when a club is late with payments.

The sub-committee, which met on Monday morning before the SPL quarterly gathering at Hampden, consisted of chief executive Neil Doncaster, secretary Iain Blair and Dundee United chairman Steven Thompson.

In a statement, the SPL stated: “The charge was admitted by the club. The club has been reprimanded and warned with regard to its future conduct.

“The club remains subject to a player registration embargo.

“A second charge against Heart of Midlothian Football Club regarding its alleged failure to pay coaching staff and players on the due date in October will be heard on Wednesday 24 October.”

Hearts were pleased to have avoided sanctions at present and will argue on Wednesday that the October problem has also now been resolved.

“We accept the result of today’s SPL board sub-committee hearing and are satisfied that this specific matter is now resolved and closed,” they said on their club website.

“We also acknowledge the second charge against the club, the subject matter of which the club believes has been resolved internally.

“However, the club notes that this will be dealt with separately on Wednesday.”

SPL clubs were expected to consider a proposal to change the league’s voting structure , but no decision has been reached on that topic.

An 11-1 majority is required for major changes, such as redistribution of wealth, and some clubs are pushing for all votes to be decided by a 9-3 majority.

If we play tomorrow night with anything like the skill and spirit and composure we showed in Moscow, I’ll be proud and happy whatever the result.

The potential of this young group of players and their manager is truly thrilling. I haven’t seen anything like it since our Quality Street Kids in the early 70s.

I think my heart might burst tomorrow when I see them walk out in the Camp Nou. We are back where we belong, we are a hugely talented young team playing the best in the world on their own patch, where we are regarded as friends thanks to our club, our history and our magical, wonderful support.

Doesn’t get much better than tomorrow night.

This feels like our new Derby game. It should be. After 100 years of living with toxic, bullying loathesome neighbours in the kailyard, it would be nice if we had a new rivalry based on mutual respect towards the good things – skill, genius, decency of behaviour, integrity.

  11. Just finished watching an excellent documentary ‘You’ve been Trumped’ that was broadcast last night. The film is about the building of Trump’s golf course and the impact it had on the local residents and the environment.

Absolutely shameful the way the people in Menie, Aberdeenshire were bullied by Trump and his lackeys whilst the police, council and the Scottish Government stood by and watched (the police actually seemed to act on behalf of Trump and paid no attention to the concerns of residents).

I was aware that there were issues regarding Trump’s project but living in England I was completely unaware of the way ordinary people were dealt with by Trump and his acolytes.

If you haven’t seen this documentary I commend it to you. I believe it is on again tonight and is on the bbc I player.

Absolutely disgraceful piece of recent Scottish history.
