Joe Baker, Hargreaves, Fraser, playing to the galleries

908

Neil Lennon’s suggestion that fostering Fraser Forster from a lower-league loaner to an England international is “one of the best things [he’s] been involved with as a manager” is difficult to dispute, despite his various trophies and Champions League exploits.

Owen Hargreaves earned an England cap before he made an appearance in either of England’s top two divisions, although he was playing with European champions, Bayern Munich at the time.  Hargreaves and Lanarkshire’s Joe Baker are the only two to have been capped for England without playing in any of the country’s four leagues.  I’ve no idea if there are any others to have earned a cap without having played in the top two division but there must be precious few.

In short, Fraser’s appearance between the sticks on Friday was exceptional.  We can now help fulfil the international ambitions of English players, just as long as we continue to compete in the Champions League.

Playing to the galleries

There’s a great line in the movie, Wall St, when Martin Sheen says, “If you live long enough you get to see everything”.  Today we got to see the incredible sight of Craig Whyte’s former PR, who represented him before and during his Outstanding Contribution to Scotland, who in fact, represented him well before this, when Whyte was stalking STV as they teetered on the brink of oblivion, use Twitter to turn on another member of the Whyte coterie, for being a part of the Whyte coterie.

It reads like playing to the gallery, which the Daily Record, is a particularly useful punch bag for.  No one cares what you say about the Daily Record, so exploit a common enemy and pile on.  Tub thumping like this is embarrassing.

Puppet master

It will be interesting to see if the Record investigate who first suggested Whyte turned his attention to Rangers, after his STV ambitions ended….

  2. The trouble at Amsterdam wasn’t the only football related violence involving a Glasgow club on the night of Wednesday 6 November, but you wouldn’t know that from the MSM.

The Dunfermline Press reported it as follows:

    Police probe Ibrox assault claims

A POLICE SCOTLAND have con¬firmed that they are investigating claims that three Dunfermline fans were assaulted after the club’s match with Rangers last week.

Allegations that members of the Pars support were targeted after the team’s 3-1 defeat at Ibrox Stadium have been passed on to officers in Glasgow, who said that they have received a report that two 15-year-old males and an 18-year-old were assaulted.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman added that they did not require hos¬pital treatment after the incident and that their enquiries were ongoing.

The Pars blogs were full of it and I know of some who will never go near the place again such was the hostility of the home support but you won’t read that in good old Scotland, where we don’t speak about such things when it involves the second most powerful organ of the Scottish Establishment.

  4. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

No offence guys but can we get back on topic?

All this talk of black pudding, square sausage, haggis, tattie scones, Morton’s rolls is out of order.

Alright nobody mentioned the last two but the mind wanders.

It’s out of order because Nobody has sent me any in the post.

“Strongly agree! In fact, I had a funny wee experience at the weekend. I was looking a photo of the Dutch Embassy protesters posted on the CQN Facebook page when I noticed a face I recognised. One of me old muckers from Coatbridge. We used to drink in The Galleria. Hadn’t seen him for years. Anyway – thanks to the power of the internet we are in touch again after a number of years adrift. After we’d exchanged a couple messages it brough back some musical memories – so off I went to put No More Heroes on the record player. My original purchased from Mr. Jamieson’s record shop in the Main Street – still has the price of £3.49 pencilled in the inside cover. :-)”

Bought many a record in Jamieson’s. They used to stick the singles in a Lilac poke.

The Galleria – I spent many a night in there as well. Wasn’t that between Jamieson’s and the Rainbow?

Rainbow Cafe? An institution! Mr. Jamieson used to give you a free single when you bought an LP. Was promotional stuff of course but seemed like a bargain at the time. :-)

I spent many a happy Happy Hour in The Galleria!

People seemed surprised that the Edinburgh tram-line was taking so long to complete – they’ve had over 100 years to put shops on the other side of Princes Street and still haven’t finished it yet.

Places with cobblestones in Edinburgh are called tourist attractions, but in Glasgow they are called slums.

And WTF is Greayfriars Bobby all about?

  7. praecepta.

I usually drink the drink of the country I’m in. So Rioja will do for me.

I’m there for 7 days and I don’t want to spend all my time drinking.

what are the plans after you arrive off the plane,I better keep the phone handy.

I spent the day in Edinburgh with my wife Christmas shopping.

In Jenners they have a superb range of malts for sale.12 year old Glenlivet is available there at just under 40 quid!!!!

20 quid in Tesco’s at the weekend.

Had lunch in a place called Indigo Yard, 2 meals for a tenner, superb food and superb value.

So it’s definitely a case of shopping around.

Anyway, the point of the story is this.

I don’t drink on Mondays or Tuesdays, don’t ask.

Get home after walking miles in Edinburgh to find my CQN Annual lying behind the door!

So, large Glenlivet in hand, I’m settling down for a good read!

Many thanks to all those who put this book together, it looks fabulous!!

    Thanks again!

As you say, Moonbhoys, I am happy in the knowledge that I will not be in their presence again, one way or the other……..they really are Scotland’s Shame….

  14. was in Edinburgh for a long weekend last month ….my mate Kelly said I should view the Parliament buildings…..what an absolute eyesore…very shoddy concrete work ,I told the bobby at the door .”you should be looking for and locking up the clowns that shuttered and poured the concrete here” …got a wee laugh …good pubs though …and the girls got to shop till they dropped..so alright for a couple of days …..but no “braw” for the capital…..

Pretty much summed the place up.

I live in auld reekie and it times in the summer it’s OK but in the winter it is a depressing place to live.

It’s very expensive and is geared more to tourists than locals.
