Jozo and stupid mistakes

687

Success in football often comes down to who doesn’t make mistakes at the back.  For all France’s pace on the break, it was their sheer solidity at the back which saw them through the World Cup.  England reached the semi-final, with little more than a mid-table select, but they made remarkably few mistakes, and just as importantly, understood the importance of set-pieces – don’t give them away and exploit them when you get them.

Viewed through the prism of an educational World Cup, Jozo Simunovic’s chest-high Alashkert was worthy of a red card on the basis of sheer stupidity.  It was an intolerable mistake, a relic of a former era.

That Uefa doubled his suspension to two game is no surprise.  Perhaps they have a stupidity threshold.

“We could go on forever about what he might have meant,,so if we just take his words at face value then if I was BR I wouldnt be happy at all.”

I don’t follow your logic here. This is how I break it down.

    1) I take the words at face value (with all those comments about Computer Game Fantsy Football)

    2) I would be indicating I am unhappy by saying those words

In doing so, I think you are still investing Brendan’s words with the meaning you hold. It is reallly easy for BR to make his unhappiness evident (as opposed to coded and discernibe only by those with similar disaffected views)

    He could have said:-

” I am not content with what we have so far and feel we can do better in the window to come”

or ” We will have to work hard in the remainder of the window to repair the losses we have suffered with Armstrong and Roberts”

Those are clear and unequivocal declarations of dissatisfaction without stating that there is an irrevocable breach in trust. But he did not say that, instead focusing on the critics who want him to replace every injured and tarnished piece of bling with a new piece of bling.

As for the 2nd point, IF (a hypothetical) BR walks before 10 , and IF it is not to what he sees as a better job or for personal circumstances then, yes, it could be because of Board Interference. It could also be, because he has grown bored of the same situation and will invite new job offers. it could also be because he recognises the limitations that he operates under in Scottish Football and, despite appreciating the Board’s efforts to ameliorate this for him and Celtic, he has had enough of operating under this glass ceiling. You just need a bit of imagination and empathy to find potential reasons and motivations that may not wholly accord with your own or my personal view of Celtic.

And, as for the 3rd point on so-callled KT gate, I have very little to offer. I have no inside sources at CP so I do not know and I cannot evaluate the likelihood that PL (or anyone unconnected with Celtic such as KT’s agent) let it slip that he was definitely leaving. Again, there are umpteen possible explanations for why such a state might have come to pass.

PL told a journo or a member of staff a lie about KT but asked them to keep it secret, in order to flush out if they could reliably keep a secret or whether they were a source of leaks within CP.

Someone else told the leaker that this had come direct from PL, without PL’s knowledge, and the person disseminated the information.

The KT deal was a done deal but one of the parties changed their mind after they thought it was agreed.

Someone lied that they had inside knowledge and disseminated a groundless rumour.

KT’s agent leaked the rumour in order to get bigger bids and a bigger bonus for himself.

And umpteen variants on this theme.

Finally, on the matter of non-disclosure agreements. If you believe there are widespread non-disclosure agreements that prevent the perfidy of PL and DD from coming to light, I think you have more faith in conspiracies than I would credit. We were told the same thing about MON, WGS and NDFL railing against the “Board Policy” and not being backed as they wished. But none of them have come out and slandered the people who treated them so. If they were just bound by non-disclosure to reveal nothing, then they would be able to say nothing> But WGS adn NFL and Ronny have beenfulsome in their praise of how PL supported them adn MON has said nothing adverse, apart from the “slow lane” comment which is not peronalised against the policy but a recognition of our market limitations, in the same vein as Brendan’s stoic comments were. Do we really believe that Bobo Balde was bought off into silence? A guy who was his own CO? A guy who saw out his contract, as he was entitled to do, and left owing Celtic nothing and Celtic owing him nothing/ What stopped him from talking out?

Or, alternatively, there were no non-disclosure agreements and there were no scurillous secrets to keep. What would Occam’s razor say? People who left the club under a cloud would surely be motivated to put the record straight- Look how Craig Burley, Murdo McLeod and others have treated Celtic after they left! The idea that PL and DD have the power to prevent us finding out the terrible things we have done, defies belief. It speaks to a belief that, if only they could speak the truth, they would be telling me what I already believe but have no evidence for.

I find it unconvincing that managers like BR would come to a Celtic where they thought they were going to be screwd over by unscrupulous characters. I believe that, until there is evidence to the contrary, that the winning managers stay where they are because they enjoy good working relations. Wim Jansen quit and told us why. MON quit and told us why. WGS quit and told us why. NFL quit and we were told that he was disillusioned with the lack of challenge in Scottish football. I have never heard Neil say so but he has never contradicted that expressed view and he has praised PL. RD quit, under advisement, because we were in danger of going backwards in Europe and a few senior players undermined him ( and most of those left round about the same time).

As of today (hypotheticals aside) BR hhas not left. He has not sted he will leave. he has not stated, at least in any clear and uncoded way, that he is unhappy with his lot.

He is not a man who has needed interpreters to articulate his thoughts previously. So, I will continue to believe that, If BR is or becomes unhappy, he will let the Board and management of the club know and, if the sources of his unhappiness cannot be rectified, he will tell the players and then the fans that he is leaving.

I don’t see a man who speaks out of the side of his mouth.

My bottom line is not to believe anything unless I can vouch for the reliability of the source so I ignore most rumours and the track record tells me I am right to do so. E-Tims were trying to convince me last week that BR had handed PL a piece of paper with names on it and PL promptly lost it and BR did not know he had lost it and never asked him about progress on the deal until it was too late, leaving BR mad with PL. Now, I would have to remove every vestige of critical thinking and intelligence to invest that scenario with any degree of believability. It is right up there with the guy who clained Celtic never practice corners at Lennoxtown because their corners are so bad.

“I dont follow your logic here”

If he is happy he doesnt say Im not sure. He gives positive spin or pro club spin ala working hard to improve and will try until last minute.

By not giving pro club or positive spin I believe, as others do ,that he is a little miffed and this is his way of saying it.

“In doing so I think you are still investing his words with the meaning you hold “

You might be right but would you not agree its not a positive statement and if not why not as everything is rosey apparently?

“He could have said Im not content with what we have so far etc “

Of course he could have . Not his style though. And the windows still open so I doubt he would be soo rash as to judge before the dust setlles.

He wouldnt be showing clear signs of dissatisfaction,, before the window shuts anyway. And I doubt he would in public anyway but I will come to that.

“As for the 2nd point,,because he has grown bored etc “

No way would any Celtic man in this situation leave before the 10,,absolutely no way. Unless ( apart from new club and personal situation as we established ) he felt he had to go. And you wont hear the real reasons but I will come on to that.

You again mention “ Glass Ceiling “

I showed the other day how we could smash what we consider to be our glass ceiling with careful trading and besides on this upwards trajectory we are on course to smash our own self established glass ceiling. It would not be unrealistic for us to smash not only the 100 million barrier this time next year but also the 150 million barrier with 50 for one (possibly ) or two sales just for chat sake.

It again then would not be unrealistic for us to “ get raided “ and sell three stars next summer and smash the 200 barrier .

I feel any glass ceiling is a barrier of our own making. Sitting ontop of these idiots in the EPL,,there aint no ceiling. Or limits to their madness while the dosh is swishing around the way it has been and how long have we been getting told its about to crash.

NDA’S,,,I am staggered at your response and how you dismiss them. They are standard at bigger clubs and your host signed one we were told recently though its up to yourself whether to believe JJ or not.

The past managers you mention do not slag off the club ,,fans or board ,,it is true.

I know what I think,,and its only what I think. THat yes you do sign a NDA upon taking up the reigns. ( Remember craig whyte wasnt allowed to diss minty is his nda ).

But aside from that they are gentlemen who mean no harm and even if they did have a gripe with some board members at the time the realise thats football and its best all round to keep your dignity. Plus there is every chance of a return in the future so why rock the boat ?

And future prospective employers would much prefer someone who did the job and shut up rather than take a chance you run to the press and slaughter you when you dont get the players you want.

    Its a form of politicking.

Ronnie,,,effing joke imo should thank his lucky for getting that shot even if he did find himself in a scrap with 3 or 4 times the budget.

WGS,,,diplomat and has been around block . Doesnt rock boats.

Lenny,,,could tear them a new one if he wished but I suspect harbours ambitions of that hotseat again so no.

MON,,too long in the tooth and tbh he cant really complain after was allowed to go part time on full time wages in years 4 and 5 I believe due to sick wife. This after being backed heavily and being allowed to keep until bosman rather than move on his buys.

Bobo,,,He went into negotiations,,didnt get what he wanted and left for free. He doesnt have a single thing to complain about. And he wasnt frozen out on PLs orders as WGS brought him back in. I suspect his heart wasnt there and he didnt want injured in case it scuppered his big move so WGS said sod this I would rather give someone else the experience and he did.

“ The idea that Pl and DD have the power to prevent us finding out what they have done etc “

They do have that power,,legally and in real life. Its called a non disclosure agreement.

“ I find it unconvincing that managers like BR would come to a Celtic where they thought they were going to be screwd over by unscrupulous characters. “

This is a strange statement no one has suggested that. When you hear and see the first few interviews he does after getting the job he is soo relaxed and happy.

We have a got a good manager ,, probably couldnt do better ,, and have just had record seasons . If smart the board would heavily back him. So far we have broke even. And he gives a non positive answer when asked about the activity. Throw in Pls previous form and I have joined the dots but am hoping I am wrong as it would soo foolish and petty to be penny pinching right now on the PLCs behalf.

“ I dont see a man who speaks out the side of his mouth “

Hes a diplomat and his words are measured and planned I believe. No he doesnt speak out the side of his mouth but hes not calling it plainly either. He cant nor would he as I said above he has to go along to get along. You cant turn on the owners unless youve made it in the game and are above them and dont care. Hes not like that.

“ As of today (hypotheticals aside) BR hhas not left. He has not sted he will leave. he has not stated, at least in any clear and uncoded way, that he is unhappy with his lot. “

Is the happyclapper way to look at it so for balance here is the mineshafters view of that interview,,,

BR turned down the chance to say he was happy with how things are progressing on the transfer front and instead chose to give a very neutral uninspiring answer despite being the leader of a club on the crest of a successful wave of silverware and spectacular financial results.

    Hmmmm.

Etims,,,within the last couple months KT leaving Scotland. Celtic leaving Scotland. Transfer list lost. etc

Ignore the crap and Ive have said before the blogs have their own issues. But lets no forget what each blogger did and said during these times.

    So,,you didnt answer the question.

If BR walks before 10 without a job lined up then its the board and you will apply to become a mineshafter. Yes or No

By not giving pro club or positive spin I believe, as others do ,that he is a little miffed and this is his way of saying it.”

That can be turned on its head- If he is unhappy, he does not say “I am not sure”- he lets you know he is unhappy because his way is plain speaking.

I am glad to see that you acknowledge that his words are NOT a CLEAR sign of unhappiness and that meaning may be being invested in it that is not there. Others were not so careful in considering there may be alternative explanations which did not chime so readily with their own pre-held beliefs.

“I showed the other day how we could smash what we consider to be our glass ceiling with careful trading and besides on this upwards trajectory we are on course to smash our own self established glass ceiling.”

You did outline a suggestion of a different way of doing things but, sorry, I was unconvinced by some of the over-optimistic assumptions about more expensive trading leading inevitably to more successful returns. I did not think you factored in enough caution about buys going wrong, about having to retrench and swallow losses. My challenge remains- show me a true comparator club that is doing it better. The glass ceiling is real and not self-imposed. We have not changed strategy with the higher wage:smaller squad strategy nor with the Odsonne signing. These options were always available within model but previous managers chose to operate differently. Plus we have the transfer inflation factor to continue. The over 6 or 7 million which secured Odsonne, a PSG reserve and U-21 player, would have previously bought us a seasoned EPL performer and established full international like Hartson, Sutton or Lennon.

“No way would any Celtic man in this situation leave before the 10,,absolutely no way.”

And yet Neil Lennon did leave and Neil was a Celtic man with a prospect of a 10. Ronny Deila did leave with the prospect of 10 still undamaged. Why can we not account these two guys as Celtic men?

“NDA’S,,,I am staggered at your response and how you dismiss them. They are standard at bigger clubs and your host signed one we were told recently though its up to yourself whether to believe JJ or not.”

I did not dismiss their existence- I know they exist- I did show scepticism as to their effect. They do not constrain any embittered ex-employee from hinting at their dissatisfaction at treatment far less saying it openly once a passage of time has elapsed. Craig Burley, Wim Jansen, Davie Hay, and Murdo McLeod all revealed aspects of their treatment by Celtic with which they disagreed. Bobo fulfilled the terms of his contract- why would he then allow himself to be silenced? What leverage did the board have to keep Bobo quiet IF he had beans to spill. We have seen Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace speak adversely about their treatment by Rangers. We saw Craig Gordon and Stephen Pressley speak with complaints about their treatment at Hearts. Are Celtic uniquely capable of silencing dissent?

You speculate on reasons why none of the ex-managers have said anything adverse but ignore the simpler explanation- they actually liked the way they were treated. It is not that WGS adn NFL have failed to say anything adverse about the club’s treatment of them; it is that they have both praised DD and PL for helping them. That’s not diplomacy and job-hunting; that’s lying if their true feelings are that they were undermined.

And as for JJ, I believe Jinky Johnstone but I do not trust the words of the guy who runs a blog that claimed Rangers were stealing water from a Catholic Church in Ibrox. Do you?

“If BR walks before 10 without a job lined up then its the board and you will apply to become a mineshafter. Yes or No”

The answer is still No for the reasons outlined.

Now, if Brendan left and said it was because he was being screwed by club officials, then I would not need to invent a reason to feel let down. I would take him at his word but I would not try to read unspoken and unconfirmed meaning into his actions. The man has the right to speak for himself- he does not require unoffical biographers or interpreters.

So, why the confidentiality clause culture ?

Remember this, when Neil Lennon walked out the Parkheid gates, it took the club six 6 hours to cobble a statement together. Hmmmm.

Also at this time, Roy Keane was offered the manager’s job, but, when RK put his head round the Parkheid gates, what he saw, made him run a mile. Hmmmm.

“ . My challenge remains- show me a true comparator club that is doing it better. “

No NO NO. We stand alone. The reason you have not found a comparable club is because there are none. Stop looking . This is unique. The atmosphere and pressure at the club is just right at the moment for our transfer strategy . We have the right amount of pressure it seems where you can have fun and be serious. The circumstances promote talent to grow and express itself.

And no one else,,,no one,,can offer what we can. You are guaranteed medals ,, and you will get European exposure right on their doorstep plus look what happened to the last guys we said this to. The minute Virgil became the worlds most expensive defender every one of our players should have rose in value ten percent to those clowns down south.

“ The glass ceiling is real and not self-imposed. “

Well where is it? I need to know to agree or disagree.

“ We have not changed strategy with the higher wage:smaller squad strategy nor with the Odsonne signing. “

Yes we have. Odsonne represents the next generation of transfer for us. In making a signing at that price what we are doing is cutting out the frogs ( pukki, bangura etc ) and saying lets just get someone we know is gonna do it. We arent seeing anymore chances at striker level,,1 to 3 million buys who we are lumbered with and will probably not cut it . Paying the big bucks for one so young tells us a few things,,they see his value rising,,they totally see him making it,,we dont just pay big bucks for experience anymore we also look at potential . We never used to do this. We only paid out around 6 for Sutton BBJ and Lenny all of whom depreciated whilst with us . When he moves on he could or maybe should bring a record fee also. We have taken the next step on the ladder but I would argue its natural progression.

“ These options were always available within model but previous managers chose to operate differently. “

Thats crap. They werent allowed to or needed players for the here and now and couldnt take the time and effort the way BR has. PL accepted players from his favourite agents , and the manager worked with what he got. Until now I suspect. The times we are in afford us to have this strategy and previous times would not have suited what we are doing now.

“No way would any Celtic man in this situation leave before the 10,,absolutely no way.”

I mean within touching distance. Brendan can plan for it. Lenny would have been killed imo had he stayed and been driving us to 10 and Ronny as I say I feel was in the right place at the right time and is one lucky sumbitch to have landed the position. But my sentiment stands,,right now no Celtic man would walk within 2 years of the 10.

On the NDA’S,,,you have brought ex players into the debate for some reason. I dont think they sign them and Im talking managers. But on Bobo,,I dont get your point. BB should have zero gripe with the club,,he played , was well paid, new contract talks were not a success so he left on a free. I dont think he signed one and if he was offered one in my opinion it was because he was involved with the non football side of things also ala being his own agent.

Like I say I believe we have our managers sign them so thats one reason they dont talk trash plus they know future employers would be put off by that. Besides,,people clash. Perhaps they all are friends now and they did have a good time working together. Thats not the point. The point is you wont hear the truth if things sour. You will hear the fudge.

“ Now, if Brendan left and said it was because he was being screwed by club officials”

Holy crap,,he cant say that. Hes not allowed because he signed an NDA.

It seems we are at a standoff here. You say if he says he was screwed I will believe him and I say he cant tell you he got screwed because he signed an NDA plus he wouldnt as hes a gentleman with feelings for the club.

    Gym at 445?

Jings, crivvens. When I worked dayshifts,I believed in being paid for my recovery. First hour or so,productivity was erm not so much.

Sod getting it out your system on your own time!

PS-I should point out that “getting it out your system” refers to the “coming-to” process, not necessarily a general unfitness for life!!!

  18. BMCUWP. I get a buzz for the rest of the day by going to the gym at that time.

Besides I still need to loose more weight as my liver is 50/50 whether it will be ok or not.

At least I have a good hip ?

As my old mum used to say be thankful for what you have as there is always someone worse off than yourself ??

Apologies, mate. I didn’t realise you had health problems. In which case, more power to you.

  20. Reading back I’ve got to say that I am very, very disappointed in some of the posts from last night and this morning.

I mean, does the sanctity of the ellipsis mean nothing to you people?

I’m looking at you Mahe the Madman (,,,) and Roddybhoy (……..)

    I think I’ve made my point…or dots…or something…

    ;)

  21. One of the things that kept the lights on across the city last year, was the pay at the gate mob who were turning up each week. With the selling of a lot more STs,for the Honey G revolution, that will be seriously diminished, and with the aforementioned ST money now showing a gaping hole in the stern,August will be a month they could very well do without.

Only one home game scheduled.Aberdeen,Motherwell,Kilmarnock,Celtic, away, could make September a rather glum month also.We will see,but the Runes have been cast.No taking them back now.

There is an argument that the three dots of the ellipsis, when at the end of a sentence, can be followed by a full stop.

Not much chance of excusing five though.

    Turkeybhoy – yip.

My tuppence – In order to maintain the pretence of equality around Glasgow football ( a pretence which is the only hope for certain media orgs’ survival) ..

… a coordinated effort ( which includes L5 and the broom cupboard they operate out of ) is in full flow to spin ANY negative story about Celtic.

It appears that this souring of the milk has had some success.

Folks, respectfully, a double treble, record unbeaten run, CL qualifications – what’s not to like?

Borrigter stuck around for the money, Griff ate McDonald’s – really?

    Hail hail

“Borrigter stuck around for the money, Griff ate McDonald’s”

Is that the best they can do? Oh,they’re in bother…

  26. BMCUW,

It might be the best they can do,but my f-k,there are quite a few on here outdoing them. The whingeing drivel and doom and gloom from some on here really does beggar belief.More intent on investigating every nuance in what BR says, than what the team is doing.Their Level 5 cheques should be in the post.

Just dont bank on cashing them.

  27. I see the Record are now running with the jolly jape from John Robertson, allegedley “Trolling”BR about the Tyncastle grass.

From a manager whos team got gubbed 5-0 .

    Oh how we all laughed.

  28. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    BMCUW – agreed.

    We should rise above it.

A general rule of thumb if I may …

If it comes out of the backside of a dog, cat, cow, pig, sheep or chicken it is probably excrement.

If it comes out of the DR, ET, Hootsman, Herald, STV, Vital Football or Transfer Tavern …. likewise
