Justifying bitterness

1111

I have two significant concerns about Walter Smith’s comments yesterday. He spoke about the events which followed Rangers liquidation in 2012:

“There was no necessity for Rangers to be put down into the Third Division.

“That will always stay in Scottish football. There will be a bitterness in the Rangers ranks. It will be a massive motivation for the club. It would certainly be for me.

“How can they forget what happened to them? Nobody could forget that.”

I’ve spoken to people at Celtic about security concerns ahead of the weekend. The game itself will almost certainly pass off without incident, but what happens on the streets of Glasgow and surrounding towns is anyone’s guess.

You will hear nothing even close to inflammatory from Celtic, senior fans groups, or anyone who cares about the club’s fans and wellbeing. Justifying bitterness due to (mis)perceived persecution ahead of this fixture is inciteful.  I’m astonished Smith said this.

On his subject matter, let me give you an alternative scenario:

Newco Rangers are parachuted straight into the Premier League, hundreds of creditors are abandoned, they have a full squad of players and are not a penny in debt. They would have been out signing players within minutes of registration (they even tried to sign a player while still in administration).

With Oldco having won the league accumulating debts they would never pay in 2009, 2010 and 2011, Newco, free of legacy financial commitments, would have an excellent chance of winning again in 2013 and beyond.

This plan was one strand of Craig Whyte’s lunacy and it would have killed Scottish football. Celtic, and others, would have been left to consider, do we pay these millions of debts, or liquidate and spend the money on players instead? I had this very conversation with a senior figure in the game in October 2011, when the realisation of what Whyte was planning became evident.  Utter mayhem would have ensued.

The damage done to the Rangers brand of clubs by allowing Newco access only to the bottom tier was huge. It’s consequences are yet to be appreciated by most fans.  Newco may never win a top flight league.

But the question was not whether to impose a trauma on ‘Rangers’ or allow everyone to carry on as we had before, this was not an option. It was whether to allow the existing rules and processes to stand, allow responsibility for the enormous mismanagement of Rangers to be carried primarily by Newco, and have other clubs deal with the fallout, with or without a ‘Rangers’ club in the league.

Whyte’s plan replicated what he’d done in other industries, but it would have devastated Celtic in particular. We were beaten for years on the field by a team who could not pay their bills or correctly register their players, then we would be beaten again as they walked away from debts without consequence, which is why I wrote this article in October 2011 on the Prepack route for Rangers Newco.

Pretty much all of what I wrote about in that article came to pass, it had to be stopped (and you’ll never know the key movers in doing so).  Smith should consider if the boot was on the other foot, if he would be happy to allow his club to be subverted in the manner he suggests would be good enough for others.  It was simply never an option.

    JFH,

It matters not jot when it was first mooted, when it was adopted was when it matters, it could not be “kicked into the long grass” until it was adopted now could it, no matter how you try to frame it.

The tone of your posts, never mind their content, is most off-putting. I have met 2 of the Res 12 guys and can assure you they are top guys, Celtic to the core. Had you taken the opportunity to meet Morrissey, you would have learned a great deal and would not be posting absolute drivel on here.

I haven’t been given the opportunity to meet Morrissey. When I readily agree to Auldheid’s invitation to meet face-to-face with a funder, the offer was withdrawn immediately.

Are you outing Morrissey as the ‘irate generous benefactor’?

ad hominem? How come? Since I’ve started posting I have stuck to dealing with the issues, and not with abusing the personalities involved. Any ad hominem attacks has had me as the target.

  9. Res 12 is becomming most frustrating but I don’t think that is due to glass hearts pumping in the chests of those from the support who are trying to see it through to respectful conclusion. Can’t say the same of those who are prone to wearing the Celtic tie though.

Canamalar, have you not sussed who is baiting you yet?

DD, sorry mate I never knew Tommy, not that I can remember anyway, but you have my sincere condolences.

Not all Celtic Supporters want to play against the hun, but every Celtic Supporter wants to hump them… more common ground than not.

Did the huns win a court case against the SFA without Scottish football suffering penalty of any sort. Is taking your home association to court through legal dispute a right under European Law over and above pompous UEFA imagined authority?

Are there boastful faciscts who crave attention within the Celtic support?

  10. Joe Filippis Haircut on

CANALAMAR. Before anything can become a Resolution it has to be discussed and agreed and then the wording framed well before it goes to the AGM. That for me and most folk would be considered as the start of any resolution. You however choose to say the start of the Resolution was when it was first put forward at the AGM so we are going to differ and I wont change your mind and you certainly wont change mine so it seems we will just have to agree to differ.H.H.

    ======

I firmly believe T&R is the way forward. I blogged about it in March 2011 on Celtic Underground and have commented on the article itself in the comments section.

The BIG question is why is it so hard for some to accept they did wrong?

  12. West End of East End on

Just to change the subject back to the football for a change. Was talking a hun colleague this morning who’s been quite chirpy lately and was of an opinion that they would do us on Sunday. This morning he was telling me that Forrester is out, I had to ask him who Forrester was as I don’t watch or read any of their games / reports etc. Also, O’halloran & King are also out as they’re cup tied. I know who they are I told him as we’ve played against them. Shiels & Law will be brought in I was told, told him I’d heard of them as they were reserve players for Killie & Motherwell.

But my point of the above is that it was nothing like pre 2012, non of the nerves or tension I used to feel in the build up. I’ve not missed them and don’t have the same feelings as before when we played the old huns.

I’m not going on Sunday for a number of reasons, hate Hampden, 12 noon KO, will be having a good drink on Saturday night and I drive to the games, parking miles away, plus I just don’t want to listen to them either. Stay safe those that are going or going out to watch it…

    Re CQN cliques

My opinion is that there is a few cliques andId say they thrive on bullying other posters who deviate from their groupthink mentality.

I don’t know too many posters on here precisely for that reasons – the guys I have met are the free thinking non cliquey types. I suspect the blog was developed with them in mind to facilitate an exchange of independent views on Celtic issues.

Kojo was a great example. I never met him. I didn’t share his personal/ political values and outlook on many issues, but I always enjoyed reading his contributions. In some respects he was less narrow minded than some of his views may have suggested. He was always open to critique and accepted criticism without reverting to personal attacks by way of response. As I say a right winger with views and values very different to my own but a genuine free thinker with insightful observations in relation to our team.

The blog does best when it is tolerant and Celtic focussed. The biggest flaw of CQN is an obsession with Hunco.

Sometimes I think this is engineered to distract attention away from our own board goings on…?

  29. MIT

Ah but that’s not what I was saying at all! :-)

I’m of the belief that no Celtic supporter should be telling another whether to attend or not this particular game on Sunday. I know many who are going but I also know some who’ve chosen not to be there despite being offered a ticket. I respect their reasons and they respect mine for going.

    Unfortunately, that point was lost.

    Kill Ultra,

Did sign a resolution 12 support form and we did converse early on.

However I do not know him from Adam so have no idea why he would make that claim.

It took him 2 weeks from making that claim till he provided a checkable link.

Expecting me to trawl through all the correspondence to find him was never going to happen.

I have conversed with many supporters throughout the time Res12 has been a live issue, sad to say I don’t know 95% of them either but then they probably know that.

WEST-END-BHOY. Motorpoint are ok to buy a car from one or two things to watch out for make sure it is a UK vehicle and not an import they bring in lots of imports the spec can be slightly different to UK vehicles also when you sell the car if it is an import dealers are not to keen on buying them. Also watch all the add ons they try to put on to the price as they can add up .I have bought several cars from them but if you shop around you will find you are not saving as much as Motorpoint say.I would certainly say go and have a look but like any garage keep your wits about you.
