Karagandy manager on Celtic and his own players

1898

Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier.  He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.

Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.

He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.

“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.

“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.

“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.

“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

    Zombies reacting now on the Herald comments post Gibbons article. So far one fairly weak argument re the march on hampden and another typically vile contribution slurring the name of the greatest football Scot ever. Sad thick people.

  3. Re the Glenn Gibbons article, the damning of the sainted Walter Smith will not go down well in the general MSM or among re peepul, but Glenn is 100% right, Smith and McCoist were the trusted custodians to Rangers and Sevco “traditions”, yet they gave their blessings and handed over the keys to riches to both Whyte and Green, before Smith slipped off stage to a hero’s acclaim.

    Hell mend every one of them.

    Years from now, social historians will scrutinize press reporting of the whole Sevco scandal and wonder why it was only reported on by a small number of journalists.

    And why this was tolerated by society.

  9. Top of the morning to you all from a sunnyish Fife.

    Glen Gibbons of the Scotsman points out that Walter does do walking away, but he/his paper is not the first to report this Walter-ish trait.

    In 1992, The Dundee Courier & Advertiser reported how Walter walked (between two police officers) out of St Johnstone’s football stadium at half-time and was not allowed to return till half an hour after full-time.

    So Walter has walked before!

    I’m on record as saying I love the atmosphere the gb bring, but hate the flares and breaking of seats.

    What sort of “celtic fan” wrecks their own stadium???

    Just what are you implying by “Celtic fan” by the way???

  12. Ally McCoist actually said this, in the same breath –

    “I haven’t made my mind up yet as to whether or not I will abstain from voting as a shareholder. But at this stage I would say that if you have a vote you’d be stupid not to use it.”

    Seems Ally hasn’t decided yet whether he’s stupid or not. It’s not a question I’m struggling with, myself.

  13. Can’t say I agree with cancelling league games for friendlies, however lucrative. Would much rather have seen us at St Mirren picking up another three league points.

    And, as always, I’m more interested in no injuries that the result today.

  14. Good morning. If anyone was in any doubt as to whether Neil Lennon faced the challenge of building a new team for 2013/14, below is the combined experience, from the last 3 seasons, of our current centre-backs:

    in 4-3-1-2

    Ambrose/Mulgrew :: played together once

    Lustig/Mulgrew :::::: played together once

    in 4-4-2

    Ambrose/Mulgrew :: played together twice

    Walter walking is no surprise, he’ll shortly be followed by Swally for ‘personal reasons’ ( is, he couldn’t manage a two piece jigsaw). Apparently CM is in deep conversation with CG about what’s required to head off a shareholder meeting.

    Trialists should be worried.

    Good to hear Neil saying that all the outgoings have been completed. ….no last day crisis finding replacements. …

    We have signed two centre half’s. ..

    As I said yesterday draw looks ok and I feel more confident that we’ll progress into Champions League proper this season….in turn attracting better players.

    Some Ulstermen must have the absolute right to march, when where and as often as they like.

    Other Ulstermen must not be allowed to march.

  24. Sunny morning in Dublin.

    Ferry over to Belfast was mobbed with horribles presumably over for some orange waddle.

    Plenty of Tims dotted around Dublin though .Not seen any scousers yet.

  25. Chris Sutton in the Retard is a good read too, on different matters. When is the deadline for adding new players to the CL squad list so they can play in Astana?

  26. what’s with all the board bashing?

    celtic attempted to keep victor, hooper and wilson, but they wanted to leave, several other players left because celtic did not want them. celtic have brought in 4 players so far and are trying to get a couple of other players in, but it needs to be the right players, not just any players.

    so far celtic have invested in the first team and stadium improvements. celtic have already stated they are attempting to buy other players and have announced plans for the 1st phase of the celtic triangle, which I suspect will cost about 7 million or thereabouts.

    so we know celtic have made a significant profit and we know celtic are planning significant spending, is it that hard to understand? lets have some faith in the football club and remember this;

    Wilson was a free transfer – sold 2.5 million

    victor was a 900k signing – sold 12.5 million

    hooper was a 2.3 million signing – sold 5.5 million

    who’s to say virgil, rogic, derk, steve m, balde etc… will not step in an up to the mark

    keep the faith HH

  27. Off to Dublin in the green. Should be down for midday. Not really expecting too much result wise today, we’ve much more important games coming up so I expect a good few players being rested. Looking forward to a good day out, hopefully we give a good account if ourselves. HH

  28. Hearing that games being scouted today are

    NAC v Heerenveen

    Eintracht Braunschweig v Werder Bremen

    Correct.

    The players who have departed have been sold for way more than they were worth IMO. Good business that further ensures we never find ourselves in the RFC boat financially.

    I always say it- we have no chance in CL so participation is a bonus. Dominating SPFL is the main objective. For me being the undisputed top team in Scotland for ever and ever is most important.

    great article from mr.gibbons not much retaliation in the comments box from der hun,it must be sinking in how sir cardihun has been a player in this debacle especialy to lure them in stupid after stupid to buy a sb in the rustdome and then he leaves and green comes back omg!loved the line”we must pray that when your head stops spinning,your face is to the front again”pmsl i had to read the article twice to make sure it was really recent and not “awenawed” in any form.yeah great piece i wonder if it will catch on maybe the lamb has been freed mmmmmm?

    i see liverpool tv have a programe tonight at 8pm ish on the game after hillsborough at Celtic park..was at that game in the main stand with my m8,both of us in tears at the mins silence in a packed paradise a feeling i hope i never experience again at a football game,it was great to see their players smile again after the match after what the club had been through God bless the 96 and their families hope every one has a briliant time together celebrating the meeting of two great clubs h.h

  33. Good morning folks,

    Apologies if this link has already been posted, one of the finest Celtic bloggers on the go.

    http://tirnaog09.blogspot.co.uk/

    Simply a brilliant read. On reflection reading those words and then thinking about the current situation with our club on and off the park and also the biggest scandal besieging Scottish Football ever with oldco, newco, the MSM the SFA etc, one words that jumps out to me about Stein is that he was class, pure class.

    Of all those currently involved with our club and out with our club and involved in the scandal that is Scottish Football I struggle to find any person whom I could instantly look at and say they are class.
