Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

  1. If we have to go for a homegrown, my choice would be.

    Jackie Mac

    Steve Clarke

    Paul Hartley

If we go foreign, top of my list would be.

    Thomas Tuchel

I agree with you about Jackie’s ability as a captain, quietly efficient.

Personally, I think it’s too early to consider him as manager.

The league will be a given, we need someone with European experience who’s prepared to work within the present financial structure.

I kno we bang on on here about how’ bigoted’ Scotchland is but on Byres Road [I kno..] last week I saw a same sex couple walkin’ hand in hand in broad daylight; to be completely accurate a mixed race same sex couple.

    …nobody appeared bothered

Would that have happened in the 70s, even in the West End, close to the BBC and the Uni?

    I doubt it.

So things are better; clearly there are those who are deeply entrenched in their bitterness but most of us are just tryin’ to get on.

The over inflated egos and salaries of EPL failures, are no good to Celtic.

    They are ridiculously overated.

We should be being clever, however, I will be surprised if our custodians are capable, smokescreen my a***

NL called their bluff imo, and good on him for doing so.

So we cant afford an ex EPL failure, who cares.

Just get us a European coach who knows what he is doing, that would do for me.

If the PLC don’t want to progress in Europe…fine, just say so.

    Dan Petrescu….go get him

I’ll be honest, when I hear someone refer to their partner, and then realise they are same sex,it is still a jolt.

Not that it bothers me one bit,I’m happy for them. But,liberal as I believe myself to be,it is not my natural reaction.

Rather,it is the one which I believe to be correct, humanitarian, whatever.

I hope that our current twenty-something’s don’t suffer from the same ‘conditioning’

As to your reference to the 70s,I was at GU in the very early 80s. Some aspects of it were deeply unpleasant.

Jack and Victor as the new management team?!

    With Winston as coach?

    At least they’re all Tims.

    HH!!

They are indeed. Was playing golf in Thailand with “Winston”,he was out for 10 days, when he got a phone call from,”Victor”saying he had tickets for the Semi Final of a League cup game against the former huns.He flew home 5 days early.

Sadly,it was the game were that useless Dutch twat scored a screamer into the top corner.Think it ended 2-1 to them. Can only imagine how sick he felt.Great Tim .

I think that people get too fixated with “the budget” as being the big stumbling block in terms of finding our next honcho.

The real problem is the backwater that is Scottish football – difficult to really “make your name” at Celtic these days as I am sure Neil Lennon could testify.

I wouldn’t say no to Dan petrescu as manager. He doesn’t seem to stick around all that long though.

  17. Never has the appointment of the managers role at Celtic been off less significance .

We take it for granted that we will win the league irrespective of who is in charge.

We will castigate any manager who fails to win cups and do well in Europe.

The job is a thankless task until the new Sevco are playing in the same league as us.

I think some on here are forgetting that our last manager was appointed with far less experience than any of the candidates mentioned so far including roy keane and owen coyle -in fact he had as much experience as owne coyles granny yet it worked out no bad for us.

Wish folk would wait 1. for actual appointment

    2. actual signings

    3. 6 mths to see how we are doing

  20. Lenny going was not planned.

Keane was our no 1 target.

Having not got him,we should not panic.

As always let’s take our time and get the best possible candidate for the role.

The club would be better telling the fans that we are at the start of the process and this is going to take some weeks.

This daily thirst for an appointment needs to be quenched.

I agree with all your posts on this.Does not take much to widen our horizons.Going ,if we do,for one of the mentioned candidates, without looking at what someone from outside these shores could bring, would just seem lazy to me.

  23. Dontbrattbakkinanger, there’s fine version of Bobby G’s song by the Radiators, live at Tipitina’s.

    Incidentally, according to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Doughnut_Day

    Friday is National Donut Day.

Even more auspicious, Sunday is National Jelly-Filled Donut Day. So in the absence of a National Jelly and Ice Cream Day, I think that we will get the white smoke over Celtic Park on Sunday.

The daily thirst for an appointment would have been best avoided by not undermining Neil Lennon.

He had served his apprenticeship and come through with a record which should have seen him rewarded with a better contract, better budget, and more influence.

He wasn’t,and the people responsible must carry the can.

And stick to what they know, and were hired for in the first place.

Europe is most certainly the place to find the man we need..

Bergkamp I’d expect will join Arsenal at some point, but with Wenger signing a new 3 year deal – 3 years is enough for our current needs. Deep thinker, smart, tactically aware…we could be an ideal fit ?

I totally agree mate – we need to cast the net wide and I’d like to think we could appoint someone who will be there long-term in order to implement a strategy of some kind.
