Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

When any senior manager leaves an organisation, a degree of disruption occurs for a short time.

There is conjecture around Keane, yours like the others is made without proof.

I think it’s reasonable to say that Big Peter has attempted to speak to the fans by talking about the process and the short-list of candidates.

To be fair this is more than I’d expect.

Celtic do their business discretely, because that is good business practice and because our club have to overcome the deliberate anti-agenda of the local media operators.

On a cheerier note, I see that young “The Rangers” starlet Charlie Telfer has snubbed hunnery and is joining Dundee Utd.

I kno we bang on on here about how’ bigoted’ Scotchland is but on Byres Road [I kno..] last week I saw a same sex couple walkin’ hand in hand in broad daylight; to be completely accurate a mixed race same sex couple.

    …nobody appeared bothered

Would that have happened in the 70s, even in the West End, close to the BBC and the Uni?

    I doubt it.

So things are better; clearly there are those who are deeply entrenched in their bitterness but most of us are just tryin’ to get on.

I tend to think that there were a lot of factors in Neil chucking it. Mjallby going was a huge issue. I suspect that Mjallby wanted the job and got a flat no. Not sure why. He would have been a decent man to step in. he kenw the ground and with a decent assistant could have done a fairly decent job. Mjallby would have been as good as other candidates mentioned. I think Neil didn;t get the assurance around the budget required to ensure CL qualification but the key to his leaving the role would be around his families security. I reckon the Aberdeen game at Tynecastle was probably the final straw. No man should have to deal with that crap. We only have a snap shot of the nonsense Neil has had to put up with off the pitch. On the pitch 3 signings last season did not hit the ground running and do not look like Celtic players. Boerritger just doesn;t seem to have anything come off for him and adding to his injury problems looks one of our worst buys for years. Pukki just doesn’t look happy. I don;t think I have ever sen an unhappier player in a Hoops jersey. The guy needs a smile transplant. I suspect that he either doesn;t like football and plays the game for the cash or just doesn;t like Glasgow. Would not be surprised to see him retire young. Even when he scores he looks like it is a bind! Balde to me looks like he has something but the coaching staff obviously think otherwise or he would have got more pitch time. I can;t see any of these guys being first team players. In January we bought wisely and the two players certainly look the part on the pitch.

Smaras not being offered a new deal clearly annoyed Neil Lennon and that may have been the final straw for Lenny on the playing side of things regarding the Celtic managers job along with the budget promised for new players. Snodgrass was clearly Lenny’s top target but that went cold before Neil announced he would be leaving. I suspect that deal wasn;t going to happen. Also the players sold last summer and the potential for more of our better players to go this summer it leaves Neil with a much poorer squad than what he built for our assault on Europe that resulted in last 16 in the CL.

I hope I am wrong and the new manager is given decent funds to buy at least 2 top notch players who can play in the team and not look out of place in the CL but I think we all suspect that won’t happen. I’m afraid the cheapest option looks likely and if I am being honest that will be Owen Coyle as he is out of work and not in high demand at other clubs. I don;t see Hartley or Jackie getting the gig this early in their careers. Also Clarke, McKay and even Moyes who I believe is a very outside chance would be too expensive and expect cash to spend. My only hope is we may have a European coach in mind. I don;t fancy Owen Coyle for the gig. Not only did he knock us back previously but I don;t think he is good enough.

Time will tell who the board eventually get on board but I think they have to do it sooner rather than later.

Interesting slant in the Irish Indo, on Keane’s request not to be considered.

Apparently, it was based on “humility and maturity”.

He was going to scrap them because he felt that it had become more hassle than it was worth.

I gave him my opinion, which was, that should be the last thing on his mind but that the selection criteria for those who were invited and the cloak of secrecy surrounding the event had to be addressed if the meetings are to have any credibility in the eyes of many supporters.

Catching up with the 1966 World Cup documentary on BT. It was the first time I really felt old enough to appreciate the game and I was hooked for the whole tournament.

Anyway the England v Argentina quarter final, as it turned out, had serious repercussions for Celtic. It’s well know that Alf Ramsay called the Argies ‘animals’ after the game which saw their captain Rattin sent off. The big guy took an eternity to leave the pitch and on his way he crushed the Union Jack corner flag as a wee gesture. Rattin did England a big favour because Hurst scored the winner soon after in a match they were struggling in.

It was a hard and dirty game but certainly no bloodbath.

About twenty years ago I saw a documentary about the history of Argentine football. When it got to the 60s, lo and behold, The World club Championship 1967, they had the subtitled caption ‘now was our time for revenge on the English (yes English), who called us animals’. What followed was the narrator celebrating our treatment in Buenes Airies (2nd leg), and the real bloodbath play-off in Montevideo. Bob Kelly punished the Celtic players by fining them, if I remember right, £200 each, while the Racing club players received cars as a prize.

    Talk about carrying the can?

    Nice one Alf.

Maybe The Huns could adopt that kind of marketing as they pile on the generation numbers?

  26. I’m glad we did not get Keane as manager based on his coaching record. There is a complete media circus which follows him around and his every move in Scotland would be reported ad nauseum if he had have got the job at CP. In his press conferences over here as Ireland Asst, there have been more journos at these events than the press conference by the manager.

I like Steve Clarke and would be happy for him to be appointed. Whoever it is though, needs to hit the ground running. It will be interesting to see what any new manager makes of our squad.I’m thinking in particular of bit players like Balde, Pukki and Boeriggter. Also, I wonder what he might get in terms of a budget.

In everyday life, im a quiet guy who gets on with it….but when it comes to Celtic and our future, I cant help being scathing about the PLC, they deserve it.

DD&PL are the problem, it wasn’t Neil Lennon….imo NL called their bluff.

The control they have over Celtic, is whats holding us back…..DD is using Celtic as his personal plaything; and that is something nobody should have the power to do.

Businessmen know nothing about football…they are under the impression that we live in some 19th century autocracy, where the people have no say in their own affairs.

They are virtually untouchable, with no sense of responsibility to the fans who fund Celtic….We deserve better.
