Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

  1. Morning all.

So a wonderful all day/night shot on Saturday was stained by being on the receiving end of sectarian abuse; not by nuckledragging burly blokes, but by three fairly respectable looking late 40s/50s ‘ladies’ from Bathgate.

This exists in our country and shows no signs of quelling.

Malky Mackay is the only contender with any real stature left, unless we get a left field option.

I wonder if that smokescreen can be spun into a magical invisible cape for PL

The dynamic duo…Rajman and the Bhoy Blunder, leaving everyone in their wake with their awe inspiring cleverness….Genius

The smokescreen of mystery and illusion….step right up

The impression I was left with was that a close working relationship wouldn’t be a problem.

On another point, after sitting in the same seat since the stadium was redeveloped, it’s time to say au revoir to section 142 and ola to section 406.

  6. igc,

Sometimes the women are worse than the blokes.

I was attacked by huns on the way home from ipox in the early eighties, as i tried to get up from the ground a female in her forties volleyed me in the face.

Just one off the many reasons i don’t want any form off them back.

    I hope you’re right.

I was impressed by Jackie Mac as captain. He was quietly effective. IMO he was a better captain than Neil Lennon.

I think he’d make a good manager at Celtic.

Though as with Neil Lennon, it would be one step forward two steps back for a couple of seasons until he grows into the role.

    Still can’t see it though.

Long time since I read anything by Stuart Woods.

That reminded me of his stuff.

Be warned, sleepy days like his rarely remain so.

  10. Sitting outside Glasgow’s Maggie Mays having a nice cold pint, my two friends and I were seated next to the three ladies.

Soon a conversation over the lovely weather broke out. After the small talk I asked where they came from with Bathgate the response.

The question was then directed back to which I replied ‘Carfin’.

“Oh, you’re one of them.” Came the retort.

Normally not one for making a scene and having a fairly amiable demeanour, this just did not sit well with me.

Knowing exactly what she meant I gave her the chance to think about what she said, “One if them?”

Another of the three interjects, asking her friend, “Where’s Carfin?”

“Och, it’s full of them” giggle giggle.

    I just couldn’t, I couldn’t!

“By ‘one of them’ I’m presuming you mean a catholic. It so happens to be they I am but pretty sure it’s not a prerequisite to staying there.”

I asked if they were deliberately being rude or was this just banter.

“Ach, we’re just having a laugh”.

And so to highlight the point I asked if they would refer to someone of another denomination or colour as ‘one of them’

No answer was given as they stood up, called me a name that shan’t be repeated at this family show hour then stormed off.

Unfortunately, I think I know what the real answer to my last question would have been.

I hope somebody has the sense at CP, to realise that all the candidates for the job, are all vastly overated…Keane, Clark, McKay, Coyle, Laudrup, even Moyes.

We should be looking in Europe, there are plenty of better coaches, who would cost much less, and bring good European players…..Do the research instead of reacting foolishly by offering the job to coaches who aren’t good enough.

Arent there decent coaches in Spain, Italy,France,Germany, etc

Ex players, and sacked EPL coaches are not the way forward.

I don’t know who these coaches are personally, but then again, that’s not my job is it.

Think outside the box, if it doesn’t work…try something else.

I wonder if you lot are going to look back on PL’s time here in years to come and think…..he actually did a great job?

Kinda like how things went with Fergus…..but before anyone shouts at me…..i did say kinda…..as in Fergus was not as appreciated while he was AT the club.

It may be a sweeping statement but i reckon everyone would agree that it is almost impossible for Celtic to compete financially with any team in the EPL and many in their championship……fair enough?

Another sweeping statement…..i reckon everyone would agree that it also hard to even attract players that we can afford to come play in Scotland…..fair enough?

With these 2 things in mind then would it be fair to say most, if not all of you would agree that it will be as hard to attract someone of the calibre we would like to see to manage us especially with the added ingredient of the treatment our new manager might be subjected to?

In an attempt to compete with the finances these clubs have at their disposal we have tried to develop a scouting network and academy in an attempt to compete in the way some other financially constrained European clubs have done over the years.

Will our set up improve year after year through experience?

    How effective will it become?

Not sure exactly how much input PL has had in all of it but he will have had plenty…..surely?

So at the present time in such a tough market for us to compete in, we have a team with international players in every position, well apart from VVD(we need to get shot of him).

    Pretty good going….no?

With the economy and the pinch that has been felt PL as CEO has still managed to help put these times in place while wiping out any debt that we had and at the same time managed to improve Paradise.

    Pretty good going…..no?

In my opinion we are in fantastic shape…..and maybe we will continue to improve?

I always wondered how we managed to get a shirt sponsorship deal with Nike…..somebody must have been doin something right….no?

Does anyone think that company became associated with Celtic when the pro IRA singing had all but stopped?

Maybe PL and the “bored” played their part in trying to drag OUR fans into the present?

Anyway…..i think there is so much for US to be happy with…..no wait……delighted with yet some think this man in particular and DD to a lesser extent, should not be anything to do with Celtic because of how they run the club?

If it takes them 2 weeks to appoint someone then so be it…..i am sure they will know what they are doing.

    Goin to work now.

    Have a good day everyone.

I’m struggling with that one – background similar to Keane’s, no euro experience, a bit drab, no evidence of tactical genius, etc.

  31. I don’t want a short term candidate…we need someone who will come in and lay a structure in place that can stand us in good stead for years / decades to come.

Cruyff did it at Barcelona, Wenger at Arsenal…give us a long term plan, style, system than we can build on and improve.

So that rules out Malky, Oweny for definite….McNamara still a helluva long way to go

Europe is most certainly the place to find the man we need..

Bergkamp I’d expect will join Arsenal at some point, but with Wenger signing a new 3 year deal – 3 years is enough for our current needs. Deep thinker, smart, tactically aware…we could be an ideal fit ?
