Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

I remember as a lot of us do that Clyde game.

He was not OK. In local parlance I think the word was gash. How the Chinese captain became the fall guy is beyond me.

  4. Cork celt,

No disagreement from me on your excellent points. I would just add that we got some ECL wins under Neil when we were totally played off the park…..Barca made us look like a junior team but we got the result.

I think my main thing is the guys are professional athletes…….a healthy diet and training regime should not be too much to ask of the players.

We’ll be fine when Lustig or Matthews get back.

    Very best regards

    I agree with Westies.

What I would really like to see would be:

Efe is ok as a stop gap measure even although he plays for his country – get rid.Next: The goalie is great by the way. Izzy needs coaching. He should try to kick it where Celtic players are. Its not rocket science.

Next… I believe completely COMPLETELY in controlling the midfield. Ronny is trying to do that with 2 persons. Not smart.

How many chances did Stokes not take advantage of ?

Guidetti is looking good. Lots o0f booooos when he got taken off?????

Some kinda power struggle happening in the dressing room. I don’t think Mulgrew is too fond.

I would like it if the Green Brigade was the Worlds first Actual Harmonious Choir. The GB should try to find out if any of their group know Music ?

The Welsh choirs are good at that. What would be the best song to show off beautiful harmonies ? Celtic is the ultimate in happiness.

When Jock Stein went to Leeds

Billy McKinlay’s departure from Watford after a little over a week and two games in charge provides us with another of football’s “what the actual f—” moments.

The brevity of his reign will be added to the annals, alongside Leroy Rosenior’s 10 minute stint at Torquay and Dave Bassett’s four day jaunt at Crystal Palace.

Jock Stein at the Scottish Football Blog

And, of course, the failed appointment that has become the most famous of them all – Brian Clough’s 44 days in charge of Leeds United, the stuff now of novels, film and legend.

McKinlay eclipses another Scot in English football’s managerial shorts hit parade, Alex McLeish lasting just 40 days at Nottingham Forest in the winter of 2012/13.

But we’ve got to return to Leeds United to find an often overlooked example of the “in and out” managerial reign.

It involves maybe the greatest of all Scottish managers. Of our Holy Trinity, Bill Shankly and Matt Busby performed their miracles exclusively at English clubs.

Jock Stein is unique in achieving his footballing immortality without leaving Scotland. Sir Matt Busby tried to persuade him south to Old Trafford but Stein wouldn’t budge.

It wasn’t until after his departure from Celtic that he crossed Hadrian’s Wall, joining Leeds United in 1978 at the age of 55.

And, just four years on from Clough’s explosive time at Elland Road, Stein too would last just 44 days in Yorkshire.

Stein must have looked like the sort of candidate that could return Leeds to the glory days of the Don Revie era.

Indeed Mick Jones, Leeds United’s centre forward of the time, reckoned that Celtic were the finest team Leeds had played against when Stein trumped Revie in the 1970 European Cup semi final.

Even then it’s been suggested that Stein was only the board’s third choice. Stein might have known that – he didn’t have the chance to be picky because the job offers were, amazingly enough, not rolling in.

At the same time, however, Scotland were in a state of flux. Ally MacLeod was limping along as manager having taken the national side to Argentina and not, as it turned out, winning the 1978 World Cup after all.

MacLeod lasted just one more game after the 1978 tournament. Which left the position of Scotland manager vacant with Stein, the obvious candidate, weeks into a new job.

United’s Eddie Gray believes that Stein saw the Leeds job as a bargaining chip in his quest to get the Scotland job on his terms:

“In my deepest subconscious I felt Big Jock was trying to force the SFA’s hand. The big man wanted to be the fulltime manager of Scotland and when he moved to Leeds he made the SFA change their way of working and made him the most powerful manager they’d ever had.”

If Gray is correct then it’s a fairly impressive illustration of the size of Stein’s personality and the value he saw in the Scotland job that he was prepared to use a club like Leeds as a pawn in his game of chess with the SFA. That Stein apparently never had a contract with Leeds and didn’t move his family south might support this theory.

Others are less convinced that he had a predetermined idea of how it would end.

Rather they saw him bereft at being jettisoned by Celtic and the Leeds job coming along at the right time. It was a marriage of convenience that his heart was never really in.

His record at Elland Road reads ten games played, four wins, three draws and three defeats. Respectable but not stunning.

The Scotland job was his get out clause – just days after MacLeod was sacked Stein was privately briefing journalists that he’d be interested in taking the national job.

Leeds refused permission for the SFA to talk to him but they could do little to prevent him resigning. That’s exactly what he did.

He was officially appointed Scotland manager on 5th October 1978 – the day of his 56th birthday. He’d remain in the post until that tragic night in Wales in 1985.

The sparks didn’t fly. Novels would not be written. When Jock Stein left Leeds United after 44 days there was regret in Yorkshire but nothing like the scorched earth recriminations that followed Clough’s departure.

Stein was able to move into the role that he saw a more natural progression for his post-Celtic career.

And his time at Leeds United is proof that even the greatest managers can sometimes find themselves in jobs that just don’t suit them.

  13. Keane reveals Celtic offer

    Staff Writer

    Wednesday 8 October 2014

STEFAN JOHANSEN, the Celtic midfielder, has insisted his club team-mates are all firmly behind manager Ronny Deila.

Turned down the chance to become Celtic manager in the summer and joined Aston Villa instead

Turned down the chance to become Celtic manager in the summer and joined Aston Villa instead

His backing came on a day when the man who turned down the post before Deila was appointed, Roy Keane, revealed he felt Celtic did not try hard enough to entice him.

The Parkhead side have made a dreadful start to the season by their standards, and crashed to a shocking 1-0 defeat to Hamilton Academical at home on Sunday to slump to sixth in the league.

Deila has been criticised after crashing out of the Champions League qualifiers twice and losing two games in the SPFL Premiership and he is also been embroiled in a row over Scottish players’ dietary habits.

But his Norwegian countryman Johansen – preparing for their nations’s Euro 2016 qualifiers against Malta and Bulgaria – has insisted Deila is coping just fine.

“Ronny is handling it well,” he said. “We all stand together and the players are fully behind him.

“So are the supporters, but if the press and some other fans have different opinions, then that is allowed, too. That’s football. But he’s handled it well and so have the team.

“We have experienced players who have seen this before. There are no problems. He’s been criticised, but there is criticism everywhere in football. We get plenty of it with the national team, too. Neither he, nor we, have any problem with it.

“It’s a very results-orientated club with a lot of pressure. We’ve had some good weeks, too, and if we had managed to beat Hamilton, we wouldn’t have had these issues. But we just have to deal with it.

“It’s not the crisis everyone is making out. We should have won the game against Hamilton – we had 15 chances, but it was just one of these days where the ball wouldn’t go in. Then they score one goal and it becomes a crisis!”

Johansen insisted Deila has not changed since he moved to Scotland. “I’ve noticed no difference in him at all,” he said. “We’ve got to the next round in the League Cup, made a good start in the Europa League and if we win our game in hand, we are only three points behind.”

He also insisted that the row over whether Deila was right to ban chips from Celtic’s training complex was blown out of proportion.

“I was at Stromsgodset before with him, so I knew about it,” he said. “It’s maybe new to some players, but they are all open to new ideas and they have had a nice chat about it. Ronny is doing it for our good. All he cares about is that he will have a fit team.

“It’s been blown up far more than is necessary. We know what he wants us to do and he’s got the whole team behind him. It looks far worse from the outside than it really is.”

Keane, meanwhile, says he turned down the chance to replace Neil Lennon as manager because the club did not make enough effort to attract him. The management at Celtic Park have always denied making a firm offer but the former Manchester United midfielder insists he was told by Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond the job was his.

However, Keane reveals in his new book how the Scottish champions’ take-it-or-leave-it offer left him cold.

The Second Half, Keane’s updated autobiography, was due to be released tomorrow, but a Tesco store in Burnage made a blunder by putting the books on sale 72 hours early and the contents were published by national newspaper websites soon after.

In the transcripts, the former Republic of Ireland captain says the club’s negotiating tactics reminded him of the talks when he agreed to sign for Celtic in 2005 in the final six months of his playing career.

But ultimately he admits the contract offer – packed full of unappealing clauses and restrictions on the staff he could bring in – “failed to rock my boat”.

Keane explained: “They were playing the part – ‘It’s Celtic’ – you should almost go up there for nothing. Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me.”

The 43-year-old, who was working as No.2 to Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill, adds: “I got a call: would I go and have a chat with Dermot Desmond? I’d met him once before, in 2005, when I was signing to play for Celtic. At the end of the chat, he said: ‘The job is yours’.

“I was delighted. It was a massive compliment. Over the years, I had always said: “If you’re offered the Celtic job, you don’t turn it down”.

“I was in a predicament … and my gut feeling was saying: ‘You’re on your own with this one’.

“Money hadn’t been mentioned yet. I got in touch with Celtic’s chief executive, Peter Lawwell and asked him to give me a ballpark figure before negotiations got going.

“He mentioned a figure and he said: ‘But that’s it’. The figures were non-negotiable. I got my head around that. But it felt a bit too familiar. I had been down this road before when I signed for Celtic as a player. I felt they wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me. I thought about the Celtic offer. It wasn’t rocking my boat.”

However, Ricky Sbragia’s side were left frustrated in Lithuania after surrendering their two-goal cushion in the closing stages, with Saku Savolainen grabbing the equaliser deep into stoppage time.

  15. Loan bhoy ‘believes he can fly’

    Date: 7th October 2014 at 10:30 pm

Written by: Joe McHugh | Comments (1)

Jason Denayer believes that his loan move to Celtic has helped his career take off.

The 19-year-old was a surprise call up to Marc Wilmots squad but Friday’s home match with Andorra shouldn’t be too demanding although a visit to Bosnia four days later is likely to prove much tougher.

Denayer’s selection in among a squad that draws heavily from players based in England has attracted a lot of attention in the Belgian media with comparisons always coming back to Vincent Kompany.

The loan Celt has never hidden his admiration for the Manchester City skipper but knows that there is a lot of work ahead of him if he is to follow in Kompany’s footsteps or even play line up in the same side as his international captain.

“I had heard that the coach (Wilmots) was watching me but I thought that I’d only get called up for a friendly,” Denayer responded to the announcement of his inclusion in the full international squad. ” I take it as a compliment to be named with such a strong group of players.”

As part of the joining up ritual Denayer had to sing in front of his team-mates opting for ‘I believe I can fly’ by R Kelly for the nineties film Space Jam.

After singing in front of his international team-mates the 19-year-old was asked if he believed he could play alongside Kompany confidently answering: “Why not.”

Manuel Pellegrini encouraged Denayer to take the loan move to Celtic, only some outstanding performances in the hoops will allow the young Belgian to complete his journey to team up with Komany on a regular basis.

The notice states that MASH holds 4,265,000 Ordinary Shares of 1p each in the Company amounting to 5% of the voting rights of the Company.

MASH requires the Company to call a general meeting of the Shareholders of the Company and to put certain resolutions to Shareholders for inclusion in the business at such a general meeting of the Company (the “Notice”).

The Notice puts forward resolutions for the removal of Graham Wallace and Philip Nash as directors of the Company. The Company is currently verifying that the Notice is properly constituted.

If valid, the Board intends to seek to have such Notice withdrawn in order to avoid the cost and disruption of an ad hoc general meeting particularly given the Company’s forthcoming Annual General Meeting, further details of which will be announced in due course. The Board is united in its support of the executive team.

If the Notice is valid and is not withdrawn, the Directors intend to recommend that Shareholders vote against the proposed resolutions. A further announcement will be made shortly.

I’m not convinced, as yet, by the school ground tactic of his players chasing the ball all over the pitch, however, I’m prepared to wait until he has Forrest, Lustig and Matthews available to see if he can translate his words into something tangible on the pitch.

  27. Morning all. Promising day down here.
