Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

    ============================

I’m in the same boat as you mate, I travel up from Lytham but canned my two season books this year. Sunday is my family day and football is not important enough to have me lose that.

Early Sunday KO’s mean early Saturday night and lose Sunday to travel. The surveys sent out recently asked “what would make you not renew your SB?” Stupid o’clock changes to KO’s to suit the armchair/TV support was the response.

Obviously the TV cash is more important than my cash so the club has recruited 2 more armchair fans, to be honest, it has made a big (positive) difference to my finances. £1100-1200 for two season books and a tank of fuel (£65) per game.

  22. Roy Keane –

““My first game [for Celtic] was Clyde, away, in the third round of the Scottish Cup. We were beaten 2-1. It was a nightmare. I wasn’t happy with my own game. I did OK, but OK wasn’t good enough. After the game – the disappointment. As I was taking my jersey off, I noticed the Nike tag was still on it. When I got on the bus John Hartson, a really good guy, was already sitting there and he was eating a packet of crisps – with a fizzy drink. I said to myself: ‘Welcome to Hell.’”

    from the Guardian.

Roy seems to be a more extreme version of a lot of people I’ve met.

They pride themselves on their plain-speaking and ‘tell it how it is’.

You say something very slightly critical and they go ballistic.

  23. BT

I was in hospital a couple of years ago and suffered the antibiotic drip for 4 days.

The strong antibiotics they prescribed for use at home did the trick…………….but the constipation as a side effect was terrible.

I can now imagine what childbirth is like!

    :-(

    (Get well soon!)

  24. Haven’t been on for a while so first things first – BT get well soon!

Just been catching up on the “news” and followed the link above from tomtheleedstim. First chucle of hte morning – cheers tom bhoy!

Love Richard Wilson to bits :

1st October – he tells us that BNP Paribas has bought a 5% stake in sevco. He goes on to wax lyrical about the financial services company now being the 5th largest shareholder in sevco and how they sponsor large sports events “BNP Paribas’ sporting links include being the sponsor of British Tennis, since 2009, and tennis tournaments around the world”. Sounds a no bad deal, eh? :-)

2nd October – Article starts with “Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has been confirmed as the buyer of 4.26m shares in [secvo]…”. Yup – duped again! Perhaps it should have started “I got it wrong yesterday. MASH is about to monster sevco…”

Keep up the good work, Richard.

Answers on a postcard marked Deja-vu.

  28. I really wish Chris Sutton’s headlines didn’t pop up on my newsnow all the time. The man is a complete turd.

His comment that “Even Henrik Larsson ate chips so it’s alright” was nonsense. First of all, it’s possible that Henrik might have been a tiny bit better if he had a bit better of a diet.

Secondly, if a player is as good as Henrik then he can have chips and gravy every night for all I care. The point is, our players are no longer of that quality and if they have to play against opposition of that quality in Europe we need to be as fit or fitter than them. That’s exactly what Ronny is trying to do.

Also, Roy Keane’s quote was funny. We all know what Big John was like when he was a player. To be honest, if Big John actually was dedicated he would have been playing at a team like Arsenal still.
