Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

  1. Someone said.. we should have appointed a ‘Celtic Man’ into the Managers seat.. Yea, great idea.. Tony Mowbray, Kenny Dalgliesh, Lou Macari, Liam Brady.. all failed, Neil Lennon, successful?? you decide… no great guarantee, is it??

  2. Now we get the uplifting thoughts of a sad individual who thinks that people who can’t cope with the pressures of modern life should ‘ do us all a favour & end their own miserable existences.

Sutton is being paid by the SMSM to put the knife into Ronny Deila at every turn. Of course he is entitled to his opinion, as are you. I have doubts and fears about Deila but he must be given time. Sutton could express his fears without undermining the manager, especially to the very rags that despise everything we stand for.

Chris Sutton is just another money grabbing opportunist, happy to bend over and touch his toes when his media masters come a-calling with their filthy lucre and searching for the next anti-Celtic angle.

In business, how would a company deal with a chief exec.who presides over an (arguably preventable) loss of 12 million pounds in his first couple of months?

    Let`s give him more time?

Ronny? O.K.,but not much more time.

Liam Henderson and Paul McMullan both scored for Scotland U19s in the Euro Champs Qualifiers in Lithuania tonight. Finished 2-2 v Finland.

No idea why a game between Scotland and Finland was played in Lithuania but good to see the young lads on target.

I was at the game on Sunday with my Son.

Look at what Hamilton have done over the last 7 years, find out that every team top to bottom prepare and play the same, they all know the game plan, Hamilton are the real deal, they are on the road Celtic were supposed to be on until Mowbray shat it and took the Fortune’ road to massive debt.

Ronny has the right ideas and I’ll forgo winning the league this year if thats what it takes to see him prove it.

If the truth be known, I am no convinced either, as I would not be convinced with any new coach, unless he had a cast iron pedigree.

You said it yourself, he has had a bad start re injuries, suspensions and players away on inter duty, tis a bad time to start a new job at a new club.

And throw in not being backed, he is really up against it.

I obviously don’t get to the games, but I watch every game, some on streams, most on the betting sites, so I can see to an extent what is happening, not as much as going of course.

Take the game on Sat………………..did we not make roughly 10 very good chances ?

Did our strike force not conspire to waste those chances ?

You are an intelligent mhan C, and you know as well as I do, shit happens, it was a bad day in front of goal, on any other given day, if half of them chances had gone in, we wouldn’t be talking about this now, would we, be honest.

Change is a painful thing, I believe the suits are resolute, they have been re the transfer policy, and that has fecked up big time, Vic apart, they won’t turn, they have made their decision and will stick with it.

I agree with your assessment about the board. In the last 16 months we have received over £30 Million if rom player sales and spent around £14 million on new players, With only VVD a regular starter. Not good enough. We have basically wasted the other £11/£12 million on players who are not good enough. This summer was the epitome of poor planning. It took quite a while between Lennon leaving and Deila being confirmed. We don’t know what the transfer budget was. Players not wanting to come to Scotland, the board not liking the players Deila wanted, or didn’t trust him with the money, we don’t know. But to wait until the final day actually spend something when we received +£11million in the summer was ridiculous.

The following is from Roy Keane, referring to his Celtic debut-

in the third round of the Scottish Cup. We were beaten 2-1. It was a nightmare. I wasn’t happy with my own game. I did OK, but OK wasn’t good enough. After the game – the disappointment. As I was taking my jersey off, I noticed the Nike tag was still on it. When I got on the bus John Hartson, a really good guy, was already sitting there and he was eating a packet of crisps – with a fizzy drink. I said to myself: ‘Welcome to Hell.’”

That was over eight years ago. He knew the score back then. Most of our players seemingly still don’t.

Paul McMullan scored tonight for Scotland U19s.

Ronny thought Berget was good enough. That doesn`t mean that I`m going to champion Berget to start every single game from Celtic from now on.

We`ve not seen much of Scepovic, and we didn`t see him come off the bench when were 0-1 down to Hamilton and chasing a goal. In fact Ronny put van Dijk up front ahead of sticking Scepovic on. Does that mean Ronny doesn`t rate him?

I don`t think its worth disregarding a young player simply because a manager who has only been in the door for 4 months – and who has exercised questionable judgement on a few occasions – hasn`t picked him.

And I`m not advocating a start for McMullan. Simply that he might be a better option from the bench than a Berget or a Tonev.

    Zbyszek 2315:-

Thanks. I`m in complete agreement with you. Play the youngsters rather than try to make loan players something they are not.

Your team has given young players a chance over the last few seasons – Michal Zyro and Michal Kucharczyk for example – and the results speak for themselves. Legia have won 7 out of 8 matches in Europe this season. Celtic can only dream of that kind of form right now.

    Hail hail.

  24. Cindirrat Thomo on

Celtic went a mere £3m in the black this season.

Following the Murray plan, O’Neil and Mowbray would have put Celtic in Admin. without Dermot Desmond backing and Peter Lawwell guidance.

Celtic will only compete in Europe by having a squad of footballers/athletes who have grown into the team mentality, Ronny is the man, hang tough, despite the hun media.

Kojo I tink you ken wit a meen.

I very much respect your opinions, but think you are wrong about Ronny. The team has been awful to watch the last two (successful) seasons. Agree that they are pretty awful right now….but the game against Dundee Utd was a joy to behold.

    Still early in the season

  28. westies, Obviously I enjoyed the game against Dundee United but if you look back on the goals, there was hardly a decent one amongst them, The Arabs committed hari-kari big time that game. I want Ronny to succeed as much as anyone and I’m not panicking, coz of the Hamilton defeat, I just don’t see any sign that he is learning from his obvious mistakes and that worries me big time. We have had a bad run and it could have been worse, we were outplayed by Red Bull & Zagreb and only for our keeper would have lost both games. We can do nothing now until Sat week, hopefully we will get the points, hopefully our team will be set up right and hopefully we will see some sign of general improvement in our play.

I was disappointed to read our scheduled Development League game was postponed tonight. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that Celtic’s young internationalists have played more minutes for assorted Scotland teams than they’ve managed for Celtic this season.

The player information available to view on the club web-site is an amateurish embarrassment. I would really like to see an accurate recording of ‘this season to date’ full and substitute appearances for all our players.

I believe there’s a good number of professional footballers at Lennoxtown training daily who have no prospect of a participating in a regular competitive game.

At least I can congratulate Hibs DL youngsters for smacking four past Sevco tonight.
