Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

  1. I wanted Roy in as our manager when there was a vacancy, however I am delighted with the appointment of Mr Deila, for me he ticks all the right boxes. I just see this period as taking our medicine and developing into a proper football team. It hurts but then so do I when I have been training and developing.

    Hail Hail.

  2. I come from the east and must pass it as I park my car in Macbeth St. and have never noticed any signs or anything for it.

  3. See this Livingstone–Sevco thing about handing over “pendants” is this a gay intrusion into Scottish football?—You know the sort of stuff–“here you are Elbows, a lovely pendant to go with your brooch.”

This needs cleared up before it gets out of hand(bags)

  5. The main thing that’s bothering me at the moment, is the players. I am keeping my invective scorn in check for the time being.

    Hail Hail.

  6. SFTB:

I wouldn’t condone the tackle either, but I wouldn’t damn the man for it either. Remember what John Hughes did against the Racing keeper and down through the years we’ve had a few meaty tackles from some of our own.

If I remember rightly Man City dropped the legal action because they knew they were onto a loser.

Regards Roy Keane in Saipan, I honestly believe his stance was the correct one but his mouth let him down a wee bit. Keane is a perfectionist and fitness supporter too and with regards his career management CV those were two tough nuts to crack. I remember Paul Lambert at Livingstone.

I think had we got Roy Keane (and his global profile) we might well have attracted a better calibre of loan player and maybe the board might have backed him with a signing or two of calibre.

Who knows, it is all academic now. I’ve just about given up on ambition for my club and would now settle for a wee bit of conventional shape and orthodox tactics and a striker who can score from inside the box.

  8. Forget the spin:

Dermot makes the decisions. That is undisputed. If he wanted Keane that means Celtic wanted him. Keane knocked Dermot/Celtic back.

Keane def has a patchy managerial record, a trait he shares in common with all but one of our last dozen managers.

Our present incumbent is a coach not a manager. If Keane’s contract had a load of onerous clauses : imagine what Ronny’s is like!

It certainly wont have the gold plating supersalary signed.

I’d imagine that will allow us to release him without taking a Tony Mowbray style hit!

  11. Can I ask you why you felt you couldn’t answer Starry Plough’s question of 14:25? What was it about the question that had you posting “how can I answer that?” as opposed to giving an answer?

My conversation with you has nothing whatsoever to do with whether you were defending Roy Keane or attacking him. Nor had it anything to do whether others were attacking him or not – I don’t know why you bring that up.

If you want to see things that aren’t there, then that’s up to you. However, I think you’ll find life a lot easier if you try not to see attacks and bogeymen that aren’t actually there.

Ha, yeah thats a fair point,

He’s a grafter, and not many would or do enjoy playing against him, I feel he still has a lot to offer to the team and the youth coming through.

Time will tell, I feel even though I want one to go and one to stay, both will be offered new long term deals at the club. Both have the future in mind and are doing badges

So Keano is the flavour of the blog today I see.

Would have had him as manager in a heartbeat, and RD would have made an able assistant to him me thinks, twas not to be.

So we now have RD as the head coach.

Been thinking long and hard about the current situ re RD, me thinks he will be here for the long haul, the suits have decided, IMO of course that this is the route we are going down, there may well be pain inn the short term, but they believe that in the long term, the gain will outweigh the pain.

We will see, I tend to think they may have got it right this time.
