Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

yes, just popped behind clouds for the mo, as you will remember I look out into the crane and flightpath so moon shining brightly in my window,

  2. I’m not getting all this Roy Keane stuff.

He’s a book to sell and msn have a Celtic manager to undermine.

    Ignore both in my opinion.

    Answer to Q 1

No, not even his own team mates, but his dugs loves him

    Answer to Q 2

The first two said no apparently, which led to Ronny.

That’s if you believe the SMSM and Roy Keane’s PR man/wummin.

It would appear that being interviewed for a job as we would know it, is the same as being offered the job, if the job not being offered is one that you think will look good on your CV/Resume – eh.. one way of the other. They cry it “sounding out” or a “mystery phone call” from a mutual friend. Any contact means the job’s yours allegedly. Any non contact means that you are committed to where you are, even if that’s walking the dogs three times a day.

    Good Evening Timland.

I would never have signed Craig Gordon.

How? ( for all Scottish CQNers)

Why? (for everyone else who is a CQNer)

  5. Clashcitybhoy –

Why should there be a connection between Roy Keane, Henrik Larsson and Ronny Deila? Should there be a connection between all candidates on a shortlist? If so, what is that connection?

  6. So Roy Keane did not feel wanted enough!

The fact that someone, anyone from the club, asked to talk to him is a sign that he is NOT wanted?

When he was playing football and someone came out with a line like that in the dressing room near him what do you think Roy’s response would be?

He could have said Celtic did not match his ambition.

He could have said that the club wished to appoint an assistant that he had never heard of.

He could have said the Celtic did not offer him enough money.

All three of the above are possibly true but to come out with “they did not want me enough” is a nonsense.

What would have been wanting this tactical, motivational genius enough?

Crawling over broken glass to beg him to come?

Rubbing gravel in our hair as a sign of gratitude for him joining us?

    Get over yourself Roy.

So RK confirms exactly what we already knew and Paul67 just emphasised it.

If John Collins was appointed number one to Ronnies number two (excuse the pun), would we be in a different situation points and performance wise ? I dont think so. I do think we would be better off if NL or RK had agreed to work alongside Ronnie as a number one. There would be no Berget debuts etc.

Is everyone going to sing Happy Birthday to Resolution 12 next month at the AGM ?

Is anyone going to try and deceive our Old Firm masters buy trying to get an unequivocal statement on Sevco´s history or lack of it ?

If we drew Sevco in a cup and lost would that be the end of Ronnie ?

  12. Tom McLauglin,

I would expect that for a club of our size and supposed level of professionalism that there was a job spec drawn up, that had a list of the essential qualities and the nice to have qualities in our new manager.

    In effect, the ideal manager.

What those qualities are, is for CEO & Board to decide.

In the case of Keane, Larsson and Deila, I fail to see any common themes, across all three,

which suggests we didn’t have a job spec for the ideal manager, or it was so vague as to be irrelevant.

  13. So Livi’s answer to Jim Spence has been mutually consented…….

    Not so Hunbelievable.

  14. Aw Naw.

I am willing to give Ronnie time.

But losing to Them at this stage would be unforgivable, and too much for the support I suspect.

    1 Welcome to Hell

“My first game [for Celtic] was Clyde, away, in the third round of the Scottish Cup. We were beaten 2-1. It was a nightmare. I wasn’t happy with my own game. I did OK, but OK wasn’t good enough. After the game – the disappointment. As I was taking my jersey off, I noticed the Nike tag was still on it. When I got on the bus John Hartson, a really good guy, was already sitting there and he was eating a packet of crisps – with a fizzy drink. I said to myself: ‘Welcome to Hell.’”

3 Blue is not the colour

“Our first session [at Ipswich]was open to the fans. But nobody came. My first day – you’d have thought a couple of school kids would have been dragged in by a dad or grandad. The warmth wasn’t there. Then there was the blue training kit. I don’t like f££&&&£ blue. City were blue. Rangers were blue. My biggest rivals were blue. Is that childish? I couldn’t feel it – the chemistry. Me and the club. I get annoyed now, thinking that I should have been able to accept it: I was there to do a job.”

    And my personal favourite….

“I rang Mark Hughes. Robbie [Savage] wasn’t in the Blackburn team and I asked Mark if we could try to arrange a deal. Sparky said: ‘Yeah, yeah, he’s lost his way here but he could still do a job for you.’ Robbie’s legs were going a bit but I thought he might come up to us [at Sunderland], with his long hair, and give us a lift – the way Yorkie [Dwight Yorke] had, a big personality in the dressing room. Sparky gave me permission to give him a call. So I got Robbie’s mobile number and rang him. It went to his voicemail: ‘Hi, it’s Robbie – whazzup!’ like the Budweiser ad. I never called him back. I thought: ‘I can’t be f********* signing that.’”

  18. This really is mental.

It’s like some sort of contagious hysteria.

Ronny has had a mixed start but there has been mitigating factors, you would think he was bottom of the league!

It really is incredible. People are banding around words like – disgrace, amateur, imposter….

    It’s mind blowing.

  19. My friends in Celtic,

In my opinion this post from timgreen @ 12.47hrs deserves another airing :-

“I’m assuming “Didn’t want me enough” translates as “Didn’t offer enough”. This man should never be considered as suitable for any role at Celtic. Anyone who goes on to a park with the intention of maiming someone, gloats over his victim as he writhes on the ground, uses this crime as a core element in the marketing of his autobiography and then defiantly refuses to apologise or recognise how barbaric his behaviour and attitudes are should have no place anywhere in football. If that isn’t serially bringing the game into disrepute then waht is.

Can anyone say that this thug is “Celtic-minded” in any real sense? Why was he ever considered?”

    —————————————————-

We have slaughtered and questioned players for inappropriate social media comments and debated if certain players were suitable to wear the “Hoops”.

We are talking about leading the “Hoops”

Actions speak louder than words, and the actions of Roy Keane have condemned him in my eyes. His premediated assault may or may not have ended a fellow professional’s career, but the fact is the player never played another 90 minutes.

We would only have been another story ( Or notch ) in the budding author’s literary money spinners and the controversy which would have followed the circus would have been cue for a third autobiography.

How he finds the time to be No 2 at Villa and the ROI escapes me. He must be neglecting his media earner.

I can still remember some on here using choice language when discussing NFL’s media role. Hmmmmmmm

Not for Celtic, not then, not now, not ever.

    HH.

PS : Maybe its just because his middle name reminds me of the “petit merde”.

  20. Biton Commons Kayal Brown.

On paper with regular games it looks like a formidable midfield. A bit of steel and desire anyway.

Pick 4 for the Middle of the park, it’s just an example I’ve given above without any thought on who is right sided, left footed etc. and stick the 2 new guys up front ffs

And play. Just play. Just get on with it.

  21. Roy Keane may very well be lacking in the social graces however we would have had a manager who knows what it takes to be a successful player at a big club and a manager who had some experience – good and bad – in some real tough leagues

Just now we have a well meaning amateur who was given plenty of time to turn things round in a league where many play for the love of the game not money!

RD seems to have been on all the right inset for European coaches and spent time with good coaches like Klopp at Dortmund however like many before him he may be good at interviews but clueless in the real world!

To fail against mediocre Scottish opposition once or twice might be forgivable but to persist with the same mistakes is just stupidity

guernica – Lennon would have been run out of town in October 2011 if the CQN experts had their way. They were wrong that time and this time…. who knows. They might be right, but it’s too early to be CERTAIN.
