Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

He’s taking the pish out of YOU. All that money you put in going into his off-shore pension fund

I heard pl knew about Roy keano’s short term plans and knew the fans couldn’t handle the fall out from a yes no beard debate

You have copied and pasted that post on a number of occasions now on two separate threads of the blog. Thought Police overtime, perchance?

The original post adopts a superior tone against those Celtic fans who criticise Ronny Deila; – the poster assumes that any Celtic fan who criticises Ronny Deila is someone who has never achieved anything in their personal life and who cant understand transitioning.

The post reeks of the same kind of snobbery and one-upmanship that once went hand in hand with the dead Rangers.

Its fair enough to challenge the criticism but there is nothing constructive in that post; its simply labelling and insulting people who don`t agree with your point of view.

    Poor show.

If you’re around. Has our allocation for Dingwall been cut? I collected tickets today and there’s no stadium plan on the back to show if we still have the temporary stand at the corner flag.

Thanks in advance, I’ll check back later.

  5. Mystifying to me,that many of those calling for the head of the manager, were coming out in sympathy for Moyes last season at Man U.

On that subject, the venerable Van Gaal has hardly had a great start this season, even after spending £150 million,to add to Rooney,Van Persie. The league looks a forlorn hope for them even this early, they are out of one cup,yet not a murmur from the Man U faithful.

8 games and the manager should be sacked.

    Disgraceful.

I remember you posting that when RK was in the running for the job.

It seems like most on here are believing the msm pish they profess not to read about RK.

He is a top bloke, didny suffer fools, would have had him as manager in a heartbeat, and I would wager we would still be in the CL had he been appointed.

And I would also wager Pedro would be edging closer to the door, as it is…………

    Guernica 2040-

I`m not so sure about the wisdom of sacking Ronny right now. He hasn`t had a fair crack of the whip in the transfer market.

But he is making mistakes, the kind of which can`t simply be explained away by being new to Celtic. Lets not completely disregard his previous 6 years experience as a manager.

He signed Berget, a player he already knew. That on balance is a poor decision. Thankfully only a loan deal so we probably take a hit for about £200,000 and move on.

But he then chucked Berget into a CL qualifier away leg before he knew any of his team mates. Reckless decision and a contributing factor in what happened in Warsaw.

And on Sunday, Stokes was allowed to keep taking corner kicks despite repeatedly hitting the first man. In all my years of watching Celtic, if someone fluffs two set pieces in a row, somebody else takes the next one. It was poor management on his part not to get word onto the field that Stokes had to stand aside next time we got a corner.

I`m not crucifying the guy. He has had rubbish luck with injuries (although some incredibly good luck re Legia) and having to make do and mend with loan players is tantamount to tying one hand behind the guy`s back.

All the same, he is making mistakes, the likes of which I don`t think a manager of his experience should be making. Lets hope things pick up, starting at Dingwall.

  9. Cindirrat Thomo on

Cant stand it any longer, Roy Keane would’ve had Celtic with a huge overdraft, lost the changing room, blamed the media and the Board and feched off, its always all about him! I wish he’d show some decency, shut the fk up, do something as a coach an shave the fkn beard aff.

  10. Van gaal has a track record turkeybhoy. Ronny doesn’t

I really wanted him to succeed and was on his side even after ICT thinking he will learn. He hasn’t and there is no light at the end of the tunnel

No point in delaying the inevitable

RD seems to have been on all the right inset for European coaches and spent time with good coaches like Klopp at Dortmund however like many before him he may be good at interviews but clueless in the real world!

    ——————————————————————————

What would you have thought if we had appointed a guy called “Jurgen Klopp” 4 or 5 years ago (a guy who was with a second division German team)?

The loanees we have are not good enough mate apart from the Swede. Alas you are right, back to the loan market for another go. Why, because although we are a big Club, it is a sad fact of life but we are not a big Club when it comes to paying fees and salaries. Three reasons in my opinion: The League we play in has lack of competition , the lack of investment in Scotland and the reluctance of the Board to speculate to accumulate, take a punt.

There is no guarantees if you spend you will profit on the park and I am not advocating we spend more than we can afford. However, given our so called great scouting network (cough cough) we can spend a bit of money and get some decent Players in permanently.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  13. Ruggyman – ok, let’s start with telling which results and performances, based the the players available were unacceptable and why?

Dundee away? Look at squad available and the fixtures around that time.

ICT? Surely you agree that the squad players couldn’t step up. Did Ronny need to get his fingers burnt to learnt that? Probably.

Motherwell? Again, I fully understand why he rested the players he did. Whilst also phasing in new boys.

Hamilton? We were all over them. One of those days.

The games we have won have all been acceptable.

Europe? A mixed bag, granted, but Legia apart I find it hard to be too harsh on RD.

  19. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bada bing, Albion Street outside the very good Press Bar should be ok for parking.

I don’t know if the traffic wardens work on a Sunday or not.

When we had that really bad snow four years ago, I left the car outside the Press Bar on the Monday of the heavy snowfall and never picked it up to the following Thursday and the car was fine.

I never got a ticket as the windscreen still had snow on it. A wee bit of common sense applied by the blue meanies.

RWE, when you mentioned shocking tackles earlier, Willie McVie of Clyde at the time, stopped the late Brian McLaughlin’s Celtic career before it really got started.

Jock Stein was very upset with the tackle made by McVie on Brian as Jock said Brian had the potential to be better than Kenny.

In the Quality Street Gang book, the author refuses to mention McVie by name when the tackle is mentioned in teh book.

McVie moved to Motherwell as did Brian but fortunately at different times.

  20. the glorious balance sheet – yeah he has made mistakes. I’d expect him to.

I’m not saying he is infallible, or the new messiah. I just reckon folk are going over the top and I am looking for examples of his failings from them so we can all have a proper debate rather than proclaiming him a dud flat out.

I see some have now decided our new signings are all duds too apart from Guidetti. Mental.

Wakaso did well on the left but struggled on the right. Now he is a dud.

Berget has (I think) 3 goals. In what, 6 or 7 games? He also set up our goal v Maribor from memory.

I reckon Ronny signed him and threw him in cos he needed someone who could play any of the attacking roles. At that point he was playing 2 of Commons, Griffiths, McGregor or Boerrigter. Berget will prove to be decent back up.

As for Stokes corners… Rubbish. However, if you look at the team, he was the only right footed candidate. I guess they trained all week based on him taking them. And to be fair, earlier in the season, Dundee Utd and Aberdeen he hit some crackers.

Maybe you are not pleased but think there are extenuating circumstances ?

what have you seen in him that makes you think he is capable ?

I should have Denayer from the not good enough category but we do not have an option to buy him.

I would add one other thing; it is extremely hard to entice the quality of Player we crave because of the League we play in along with the wages that can be paid playing for a mediocre EPL Club. Sad but it is just the way it is.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  23. Getting slaughtered by Legia 7-1. Losing at home to Maribor and dropping 10 out of 24 SPL points, is a bloody poor return from any Celtic Manager.

The possession football & high tempo attacking game seems to be off the agenda.

The persistence of 2 wingers for the most part on the wrong wings plus Kris is leaving us short in the engine room.

A series of crazy substitutions that have had us all scratching our heads.

We need to set up our team to play to its strengths. Yes injuries have played a part but Ronny must take a huge slice of the blame. Hoping he turns it around but worried he is out of his depth.

    Bankiebhoy 2109:-

Its this particular line :- “I suspect many of the loudest voices criticising have never achieved anything personally, and have no clue what is involved in transitioning”

Clear cut enough to me, and the other posters who have commented on it.

    Hail hail to you too.

  25. Lennybhoy i see it like you…but where does it stop….next year just consider…Berget Tonev Wakaso Deneyer Guidetti VVD (probably) Commons (probaly)..all gone….If we win the league….where is our team for C/L qaulifiers……its really scary….think about it and you realise its a boardroom problem….the ethos of loan players doesnt work……..as MWDsays ( a poster i admire)…moneyball doesnt work…
