Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

  1. guernica-Bad finishing at times has cost us,bad luck or bad players?.I really hope RD can do as he preaches, but as you know results are everything.2 embarassing defeats by Legia and Maribor,i still cannot see the shape of a team yet.Baffling substitutions, guys playing on the wrong side of the park,Stokes hair transplant, had him waking up as Michel Platini.I still think the players are playing for him,but not sure where they are meant to be playing.HH

  2. So the Livingston programme editor had fallen on his sword , no doubt under pressure from The Livingston board scared of the threads and intimidation from the zombies.

My God what a country this is.

They have even had to issue a statement distancing themselves from bigotry and sectarianism !!!

What the hell has bigotry got to do with a programme editor telling the truth about a football club being liquidated???

I hope our programme editor has similar convictions to the Livi guy whenever the inevitable happens and we meet them for the first time?

Somehow I doubt he or she will have any editorial influence.

Big Pete will c to that.

My humble apologies, I will make a point of buying you a pint on Saturday. No doubt I will recognise you.

dont be fooled by any imposters an offer of a pint brings out the worst in some, we will arrange a secret phrase-)))

  4. What is the stars – I think Ronny is trying to change a culture. I’ve said it before that that can only be a good thing. I think, of what I have heard from Charlie Mulgrew and Robbie Neilson, his methods on the training ground are very impressive.

He is trying to encourage each player to use every day to improve by having the best facilities available to allow them to do so. To this end he has made Jim McGuinness full time. He has brought over the man Lunov from Norway who specialises in match analysis, which is fed back to the players. He is ensuring the players eat well and have their weight monitored.

These are all things we should have been doing if we were to call ourselves a champions league club.

He has John Collins there. Now, google John Collins Coerver coaching and you will learn about the sacrifices he made to get to the top and belief in composed ball players he has. Watch Celtic Tv training clips to see how it contrasts from last year and how John influences that.

The real fruits of the above will be seen in the likes of Liam Henderson and Paul McMullen etc. it won’t happen overnight tho.

Then look at this season objectively. Look at each game and ask yourself why we lost, what we could and couldn’t control, what we have learned.

I think to revert to type now would throw away a great opportunity to progress

Email recieved, “D” scatching her heid with the cryptic language. She read it out to me, and I understood every word, she’s beelin’. Hahahaha. Talk as arranged. Incidentally, if I could make it this Saturday, I would decline, a keyboard bully is likely to attend. That would, if I could, count me out. Will explain when we blether. :-))))

  6. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

My son and I have just watched the ITV 4 Bundesliga highlights show we recorded.

Dortmund lost at home to a dreadful Hamburg side who before Saturday had only scored two league goals this season and two points, one of which was against Bayern.

Dortmund have some of their best players out injured but their defence was worse than ours. Hamburg cut through Dortmund’s high line very easily. It was sad to see.

Ronny is very keen on Jurgen Klopp’s playing style, Klopp has the players to play the style he wants, when his squad is fully fit, Ronny doesn’t unfortunately.

Like others I’m in favour of the diamond we used v Hearts & the Mothers last season, our two best performances & results last season. However, we need Mikael or Adam to be fully fit to give us the width on the right to play it well.

  7. TGBS

    Thanks for clarifying.

Barcabhoy makes his point clearly too and with some precision. I suspect there’s a lot in his estimation.

    It’s clear we can’t agree.

  8. the glorious balance sheet on

    Guernica 2117:-

Absolutely nothing wrong in a good proper debate, I much prefer that to the labelling and entrenched positions that go on on here sometimes!

To be honest the loan signings haven`t been great, Denayer and Guidetti aside. Wakaso has not played enough, but in all honesty I think that we have seen enough of Berget especially and also Tonev to form a judgement. Especially having due regard to their form prior to joining Celtic i.e unable to get a game for poor Cardiff and Aston Villa sides.

If they can`t show good form when they`re playing to cement a move and save their career – as they`re doing now – then when can they do it?

Berget`s 2 goals came across Dundee Utd and were typical flat-track bully goals; the icing on the cake goals against a team that had capitulated, not decisive matchwinning goals at Aberdeen or Motherwell.

In open play in that match v Utd I thought Berget was very poor, I recall him trying to trap a ball coming out of the sky and it bouncing off his shin, going 30 odd yards infield. It was embarrassing for a professional footballer to do that. In the 2nd half he miscontrolled the ball out of play on the touchline and chickened out of a couple of challenges.

He really won`t do as far as I`m concerned.

Stokes goes from being out of the team into being the team`s go to guy for set pieces. I think that is a poor managerial decision, but maybe it also tells us a fair bit about the lack of quality in the squad. And that`s not something Ronny can be blamed for.

I wonder what will happen with corners from the left if Stokes is dropped at Dingwall?

  9. Lennybhoy…cheers man….things are hard for us right now….i hate being a doom merchant ..and i aint all about downing Deila( though i do think he is a dud)….im looking forward and im really scared…if this is the boards way forward then we are really in trouble

  10. I see Roy Keane bust big Dane Peter Schmichel’s eye in a punch up at Manure. Must have been some left hook to hit aguy that size, Roy of course began his career in sport as an amateur boxer.

‘Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy’

LOL so instead we employed someone vast footballing management experience and tactical ‘nounce’ seemingly acquired while playing championship manager.

I’d bite RK’s hand off now if he offered to manage Celtic. He couldn’t be any worse than Pete’s latest feck up.

Hysterical crap.To denigrate RDs feat in taking his last team to the championship shows you know nothing. The equivalent in Scotland, would be some guy winning the SPL with QOTS.

Where is the facts behind”Ronnie is a “Feck up”.If he wins the treble this year, will he still be a”Feck up”.At the moment,he still has every chance.People like you are no different to the trumpets on the radio.Filling the SMSMs boots for them.Shame on you.

  12. To a man everyone is jumping on Ronny is a dud, or out of his depth, dearie me.

Had Pedro given the last coach the funds, we wouldn’t be talking about RD, had Pedro not put all his eggs in JP’s basket, Lenny would still be the coach.

maybes RD is out of his depth, I don’t think he is, he is trying to play a system the players don’t like, tough shit, they either like it, of ship out.

The suits will not sack RD, get used to it.

As another poster said, had we signed Jurgen Klopp a few years ago, the blog would have been in uproar.

There will be no money to spend, JP has seen to that.

  13. It’s clear to me we are living in a parallel universe.

Where we deny the obvious truth from guys like Keane.

And where people get sacked at livingstone from telling the truth.

Scottish football is just WWWF. Awaiting its death and with it the death of celtic. A once great club sacrificed on the alter of. Only, greed, ambition and sectarianism.

A sadder death than the Huns.

  14. What is the Stars on

    Guernica

    Interesting reply

You are obviously buying into Ronny big time

    again fair enough

Results/performance however is what its all about and so far the results/performances have been woeful

How long do you think it will take for Ronnys revolution to start showing some positive results

Do you think it would be acceptable to not win the league

  15. Glass…

Klopp had managed in the German second division which is a much more professional set up than the Norwegian league

That is my point – RD has very little experience in a big club environment

We have a guy in charge who really believes that two super fit midfield players can take on and overcome three or four opponents who might be nearly as fit as they are!

His system might have a chance if he had 7 or 8 players who could play the system but right now he is lucky if he has 3 ( SJ SB JD )

He needs to work towards his desired system by compromising on things like the midfield two

On Sunday we looked like a boys team at times with a system that looked like 2-2-6

    This cannot continue!

    My midfield would be

Brown (rhs) Biton, Henderson, Johansen (lhs)

Then we can play with 2 overlapping full backs, and 2 up front and through the middle,

    Or

    Commons off Guidetti ?

    Drop the wingers, not working

  24. Dallas Dallas………..pity to see such a fine footballer like Matthews with a body made of glass, future for him at Celtic is bleak. Mikel will be back and the sooner the better good news is that the serious hip injury is healed after the op he had last season.
