King’s statement, what it told you and what it didn’t

476

Loved Dave King’s statement, absolutely loved it, as Kevin Keegan would say. On the positive side for Newco fans, “Rangers” beat Celtic 2-1 on the mention count. Well done, Dave, excellent result.

In short, Our New Hero confirmed five points:

The manager he appointed in 2015, Mark Warburton, was an improvement on Ally – I’ll tell the fans anything for money – McCoist, but he was not good enough when up against top-flight clubs.

He didn’t get a resignation from Warburton and his management team. There are now two club statements out there earnestly trying to convince you otherwise, but both are clear on the subject – there was no resignation.

They have burned £18m in less than two years to get into this mess.

“Our realistic expectation [for this season] was to come second”.

There will be jam tomorrow.

Warburton and his management team were sacked in the most dignified manner conceivable: informed by a journalist who read they were out of a job on the club web site.

Let the sacking sink in for a moment. Management were informed they were sacked by a journo who read an article on a web site! Years from now no one will believe such a thing could happen.

Who behaves like this? Sacking someone is never pleasant, but if you don’t have the cahonas to do the job in person, get out of the employer business. You have to wonder where their moral compass is.

The club appear to have acted after it became clear Warburton & Co. were not getting the Nottingham Forest gig and there would be no chance of a compensation payment heading to Glasgow. Forest didn’t buy the soiled merchandise, there’s no resignation letter nor even a meeting where a verbal resignation could have taken place. Not a concern if they don’t remain in business long enough for the legal process to run its course, though.

I’m pleased King made the financial facts clear: this is what overinvestment looks like at Ibrox. £18m shovelled into the furnace already, and there’s a good chance pushing that figure up to £30m will not be enough (according to King).

What “enough” is, is the question.

Their realistic expectation was to come second! Less of this “Going for 55” nonsense, please, you’re “Going for second place”, we all know it. There is no shame in this, the cold fact is that Celtic are out of reach.

Going for second place is a high watermark from now on. Pushing the £18m up to £30m or more will do nothing more than make the battle with Aberdeen and Hearts more interesting.

This season alone Celtic will earn £50m more than any other Scottish club. £30m, £50m, £70m over three or more years will still not bridge the gap at the top.

Then, when the last of these loans are made, the unpleasant business of reigning costs back to breakeven point will take place. What you didn’t read in King’s statement was any awareness that football clubs have to pay the piper. Financial responsibility is a foreign language.

Given his past football directorship, you’d think……..

Had to laugh at the holier than though Dons though who appear to be angels and it’s all the fault of the ‘Big 2’…that was their first mistake. Perhaps they just cannot hear their vile fans chanting about Jimmy Savile and glorifying in child abuse.

  5. Greempinata,

You are correct, I think. Celtic should and are open to all. The archway is very broad.

The generosity of the club’s welcome shouldn’t be misinterpreted as platform for views that are fearful and clearly directly opposite to the ethos of ‘open to all.’ (IMO)

That’s where CQN and other forums are useful.

If we are ‘open to all’ surely that’s universal, the refugee, the poor, wealthy, socialist, loyalist and republican.

Social justice and true equality for all is a admirable ambition for a civilised society. Indeed we can evaluate our society by how we treat our, poor, underprivileged and especially disabled. We can all do our wee bit to help.

But that must ultimately be a political solution helped by a strong vibrant economy.

To disenfranchise some Celtic supporters who don’t agree with those sentiments is way beyond the remit of a football club in 2017, even one with such an honourable birth.

    **********

    You’re in for a treat!

  16. Just a flying visit to Celtic Quick News this morning.

I enjoyed the game on Saturday very much. I have been watching all the games as usual back home in Australia but you can get a better feel for the team when you are actually at the match.

I thought that Celtic played very well. I was a wee bit disappointed in the opposition. They gave us a hard game up there in that 2-2 draw but they never produced anything of note on Saturday, other than the rough stuff. Same as it ever was.

I was looking forward to seeing both Dembele and Sinclair as they have been tremendous this season. Dembele is a young player and because of this he can still be a little hot and cold. When he’s hot he is special and I know that he is going to get much better so hopefully he’ll continue to learn his trade at Parkhead.

Sinclair will maybe be a bit disappointed about his performance on Saturday as he was quieter than usual. He would have wanted a goal when we’re scoring so many in a game like that. He has been outstanding all season so he has set very high standards for himself.

I liked the look of Sviatchenko, he was always involved and seemed to manage the defence very well.

The young left back, Kieran Tierney has come on a lot since I last saw him. He is a very impressive footballer.

Scott Brown continues to gives Celtic all he has got in every game. You can’t ask for more than that, especially from a captain.

James Forrest made four goals but I still think he needs to believe in himself more, then he’d be some player. He has the talent, if he could give 200% especially when it gets rough and tough out there then he’d realise his potential. You need to be brave, stand up to it and come back at them for more. Then they have no answers. Just like Jinky really.

I remember speaking about Forrest on CQN a few years ago when I said that he’d develop into a fine Celtic player. However he stalled for a few years but Brendan Rodgers has started to change that and he is starting to believe in himself more.

Thanks to everyone at the game on Saturday for the very warm welcome I got at half-time. It remains a pleasure to walk onto the Park.

Anyway I’m off now back to Celtic Park then I’m doing an interview with the BBC for their Lisbon Lions programme, then it’s back home to Australia.

I’ve promised Winning Captains that I’d come on and answer some of your questions when I’m back in May and hopefully I’ll see some of you at the Greenock Celtic Supporters Club at the CQN event there.

Meanwhile enjoy watching this Celtic team, they’re very good.

  17. Thanks Lennybhoy..

  20. Thanks for your insightful contribution Willie “Lisbon lion “WallaceI hope you enjoy the 50th celebrations of that memorable never to be forgotten occasion that you played in in 1967. looks like 50 years on Celtic are again going to have a very special year though not up to the one you experienced :)))

  21. HT,

Thank you for your kind words. I think there is good and bad among all peoples. The overwhelming vast majority of Celtic supporters are good people, but we can all think differently.

I am naturally just very wary of selection and labelling especially at an early age.

There’s also double standards everywhere. The homophobic abuse the late Jimmy Hill got was laughed off as banter. Granted it was years ago , but the thousands singing the songs were / are not bad people, they just needed education. Not labelling.

There is also the play on words. Too often the term fascist is dished out in the incorrect context. Usually because somebody’s views differ from our own. This totally dilutes the real meaning of the evil of Fascism.

IMO education is key. As a side issue, it’s also the best way out of poverty.

HH . And mind the Chaaaaaaaasm.

  22. Thank you Willie Wallace.

It’s always great to see the fans are former players so unified.

As a club we may get some things wrong, but we get soooooooo much right.

HH and thanks again for a fine post.

  23. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Greenpinata,

Will you fight for the right of orange Celtic supporters to march round Celtic Park in that open culture, with fascists recruiting outside. I thought we were different because we are more discerning in our ideals. Those ideals involve a bit more than kicking a ball about a park, as soon as you hit charity you hit politics.

It looks to me like you’ve completely missed the point on socialism, for some reason you think the socialist aspiration is to drag everyone into the stone age. A myth, successful lie propagated by those who drive that perspective.

Improving the lot for the majority and reducing “privilege” is the socialist aspiration. The principle is focused on peoples well being, it is not an economic system, the economic system offered was an example of how socialism could be self-sustaining in the prevailing environment. The reaction to that clumsy study was terror that the serfs would believe it, so two world wars and the eternal threat of nuclear extermination with a bit of religious mumbo jimbo thrown into ensure freedom of stupidity is tolerated. Celtic started as a charity, those with “privilege”, decided that those without could go without or make do with less, within years the club went from a charity to a limited company making money for thee “privileged”, they had their private schools and medical cover and toilets in the hoose, did the poor people stop being poor that year ? Celtic remaining a charity was unthinkable, political suicide for the “privileged”.

Capitalism as the word suggests is focused on capital, making money which is how “privilege” is obtained. The feudalists and gangsters make sure its all about empires.

Since socialism became a popular ideal in the UK, the lot of the vast majority of residents improved, a couple of examples being, educating generations of people to professional status in numbers that would have been unimaginable in the previous century, difference being selection was 99% on merit.

The NHS, the most cost effective national health care organisation in the world, $3k per head top of the list, compared to USA $8k per head and how many people were bankrupted in the UK for medical bills.

I’m a bit confused by your argument, should we think these two examples a sign of failure ? The only places you’ll see failure linked with either of these two organisations is from the stupid and “privileged”, however both are now failing because these groups are allowed to push their agenda. The education organisation now sells education, educating the residents has become a burden and not the priority it was, the value of education has been replaced with the cost of education.

Both introduced to appease the threat of socialism and both thoroughly contested throughout their life cycle, currently being eradicated and labelled failures by propagators of capitalism.

  24. RP MCMURPHY on 13TH FEBRUARY 2017 11:28 AM

Jimmy Hill wasn’t actually gay as far as I’m aware. That doesn’t for a second excuse football supporters calling him a ‘poof’ but it was intended as an insult rather than an abusive comment about his sexuality.

I’m only offering my opinion, by no means is it an authoritative account. The fact is that there are Celtic supporters who’d align themselves with the groups I mentioned. We read them at times on these very pages.

My own view is that their beliefs are diametrically opposed to what Brother Walfrid believed and his reasons for creating Celtic.
