Ki’s remarkable transfer to Swansea

625

Best wishes to Ki Sung-Yeng who joined Swansea City today.  The Korean international joined Celtic in January 2010 but the subsequent arrival of central midfielder Beram Kayal, Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama, curtailed his first-team opportunites.

Ki possesses excellent technique and can cover 50 yards as quickly as anyone at Celtic but he often failed to impose himself on games.  Selling a reserve player with 15 months left on his contract for a fee of around £6m is truly remarkable.  I am one of the players many admirers but I don’t know anyone who would pay anything like that money for him.

We Oscar 4 Life’ have organised a bucket collection for Dundee home game at CP on 22nd of September and require a Lorry Load of Volunteer collectors. To volunteer as a bucket collected please email us at weeoscar4life@gmail.com.

The Olympics helped sell him in my opinion so they weren’t the waste of time I thought.

Superb bit of business but I will be sorry to see him go .

..doesn’t show much ambition on his part but at least he will get a regular game and a hefty wedge

I reckon that Swansea under Laudrup could be hugely entertaining this season – but not as entertaining as the hoops.

  4. I remember Barcabhoy stating that there was a ‘nuclear’ story about rfc that would make the whole brand so toxic that no one would touch them. Anyone have any info on if/when this story will surface?

    Bournes,

    From last thread

Minty, Walter, Whytey, Green, Sally – round up the usual suspects…

  7. Best wishes to the lad but why, given the apparent lack of interest in him by other cash rich clubs darn sarf, did Swansea need to pay £6 million plus for him?

Well done PL. If I’m allowed to say that.

  9. Smiles all around on the Ki deal I would imagine, the Bhoy wanted to move on good luck to him, he played his part for us last year when our injury list was like the one we are building now!

Gutted to hear Joe Ledley is out, we could be light in that dept on Wednesday, Big Vic being back should compensate for Kayal…

It’s going to be a big lorry to fit a 100 volunteers in :-)

  11. Personally I think Swansea have got a steal at that price, when you consider that they recently sold an inferior player for £15m on the basis of one good season in the EPL.

Ki’s ability to retain possession and pick a pass will thrive in the greater footballing environment of the EPL, away from clowns such as McCall and Butcher sending players out to harm him.

To those mocking his choice of club, sadly a small EPL club will afford him the opportunities that we can’t, although I’m disappointed he didn’t appear in the Champions League as I think that would have driven his price up further.

Good asset management , but a gap in the team that needs filling as far as I can see.

Looking at Ki holding up the scarf at his new home ground… probably made him realise just how big a club Celtic are. I’d say he may regret it slightly if its to be a relegation battle but great business for us. Good player…too often got the rush of blood to the head in good positions and took the wrong option. If theres a sell on fee too then Pete might have a cigar out by now.

Spend some it please, big man.

A bad sign that can is so imprinted on me that it’s the first place i go to when I’m tryin it out.

    Best of luck to Ki.

Sad to see him go but we can’t hope to always keep such talented players on our bench

Also hope we stuck a big fat sell on clause onto the transfer.

i think the epl market is over inflated as opposed ours being unrealistically low. Take into account the profit we have made…we got him for about 2m

  15. The best quote I saw on CQN *apologies forget the moniker* was that ‘if Celtic shelled out £6Million for a midfielder, I’d expect to get a better player than Ki Seung Yung”

  16. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I wish Ki all the best – but was never really a fan.

In my opinion, PL has done exceptionally well negotiating this particular deal, particularly if my judgement proves wrong and we are still protected by sell-on clauses etc.

Interesting that Swansea appear to be interested in Itay Schechter from Israel – he was on our radar 12-18 months ago.

Maybe Swansea are a decent yardstick as to how Celtic version 2012 would fare in the EPL?

That said, if we had that corrupt SKY telly money at our disposal, we would be using Barcelona as our yardstick…

  18. Im a big fan of Ki and hope he goes onwards to a fantastic career in league(s) where his talents are much more suited than the SPHell.

Wish him all the best for the future at Swansea and beyond.

A great piece of business by Celtic though.

  21. Happy with the money as we might need it and we have an abundance of talented midfielders but Ki, if he performs, will end up going for 2-3 times the fee we received for him. I hope we got a sell-on clause. And let’s not forget we paid good money for him. £2.5-3.5m quoted at the time.

I’d like to see a goal-scoring, goal-creating central midfielder added as I feel all our midfielders are more on the defensive side.
