Lack of respect for Molde and Malmo

1280

Before this Europa League group got underway the trips to Istanbul and Amsterdam looked daunting. Those games produced two credible draws, but things went wildly wrong elsewhere.

Our goal last night was a peach. Dedryck Boyata split the Fenerbahce defence to open up space for Mikael Lustig to cross for Kris Commons, who peeled off his marker to create the space to head home. Unfortunately only one point was collected as we lost another Keystone Cops goal.

Craig Gordon seems to be struck by a lack of conviction this season. His was not the only failing at our repeated corner kick fiascos but letting a ball trickle through his legs as he appeared caught in two minds is indicative of a player who is doubting himself.

You know Kris Commons scores and creates huge goals for Celtic, we’ve discussed it often enough here. Despite his veteran status and apparent ill-fitting to our system he remains by far our most effective player.

For Ronny, it didn’t go wrong in Europe this season against Fenerbahce or Ajax (I’m absolving him of blame for Efe’s error or a last minute breakaway goal at Celtic Park), it went wrong home and away to Molde and Malmo. We appeared to underestimate both.  Did the manager have something to prove against fellow Norwegian managers?

Celtic dominated possession stats in all four games against Molde and Malmo but the Scandinavians exploited the acres of space which simply didn’t exist in our games against Ajax, Fenerbahce or Qarabag, for that matter. Ajax, Fenerbahce and Qarabag got the respect they deserved, not so Molde and Malmo.

The failure is, of course, more complicated than that. Jozo missed the bulk of the campaign, while Dedryck is only just beginning to look like a footballer (lovely pass for the goal last night). Scott Allan looks promising, but we’ve not seen enough of him either due to injury.

Curiously, Ronny’s big 2015 No. 1 striker target, Nadir, looks less like a Ronny Deila player than anyone we’ve bought in years. Knowing we were interested in him, I watched his performances against Celtic last season, and made the same observation at the time.

What happens if your keeper’s form falls off a cliff, one of your new defenders doesn’t settle quickly, two other new players miss months through injury, and your new striker doesn’t morph into a different player? You finish bottom of the Europa League group.

Celtic must now consider their strategy for January. Successive transfer windows have left us weaker, not stronger. Identify the reasons, remediate and we can build on the away performances which bookended this Europa League campaign.

Watching Nadir Ciftci last night made me realise what a player Bobby Lennox was.

-Annie Lennox is a better player than Ciftci…

As I suggested last night. It is possible that Sutton is simply a negative Celtic supporter. There are plenty of those around 0:-). Once the Media becomes aware of this attitude , then it increases said Negatron`s chances of work in said Media. I believe Sutton is honest in his opinions but not particularly perceptive and not particularly bright. Perfect for Sports Media !

  3. JJ,

    Agreed.

Still canny remember seeing him up taking our games in when he wasn’t paid to.

    Hope yer well.

  4. I am not making an excuse for lighting flares at games, but I can understand why a drunk or gullible fan would think it was acceptable in Instanbul.

  5. If glibby told the agm last week that they had repaid the loan to Mash, and I honestly can’t recall if he did or not, that imo would be as bad or worse than telling porkies in court, you just can’t go around lieing to shareholders as you please.

Anyone know if they did tell their agm that they had repaid the loan ?

  6. When Celtic signed Ciftci (who the feck is Ciftci), I honestly thought, as a devout Celtic supporter, in my mind at least, although until we get employee equality of benefits the PLC don’t get a single penny more from me, I really did believe, sincerely and with shame, we were scrapping, furiously, at the bottom of the ‘money ball’ barrel.

Now I tend to think I might just have been rashly unkind, I might even have been a million miles from the truth in my haste to judge, maybe I was attention seeking because my life without the adoration of a blog and its cyber population is a void, maybe I was just simply wrong, wrong; it happens, I’m only human after all…

Maybe, just maybe, the barrel is on the floor of abyss and we are still tethering on the edge and it is still a long, long way down before we really scrape at the bottom of the barrel in torments of sorrows and embarrassments.

For the first time in my life, for the sake of my club, and its heart, and its soul… I would not cry if Aberdeen, or Hearts, or Ross County, or Airdrie, won the vaunted, and world renowned, and feared, and gash, SPL.

It is not nice, and it hurts too, but I only say it because I care.

GASL told the AGM the board had decided to pay the loan back as it was, “the right thing to do”!!

I am not making an excuse for lighting flares at games, but I can understand why a drunk or gullible fan would think it was acceptable in Instanbul.

Were they drunk or gullible when they acquired the flares?

No excuses, they have been well warned.

Problem is, that in some perverted fashion these numpties think that they are bigger and better Tims than anyone else and that makes them untouchable.

Last night I posted that it might be an idea if Celtic withdrew from European competition until we had a decent team.

If some numpties don’t get a grip of their knickers, EUFA will do the withdrawing for us.

if your not listed of course you can.

The major shareholders are more interested in adherence with exchange rules than they are fellow shareholders. I include Celtic plc for a certainty on that one

Although I am delighted and it is truely well deserved. I wonder , would Celtic need authorisation as well as planning permission for a statue to a living person.?

I know that there are certain guidelines. Eg it was well documented that Westminster broke its own 10 year dead guideline for Nelson Mandela. And rightly so.
