Languishing in Paris

710

When watching Real Mardrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich it is easy to be discouraged at the gap between where we are and the quarter finals of the Champions League, but despite the many hundreds of millions spent on both Paris St Germain and Chelsea, the standard of passing and decision making throughout their game last night was abysmal.   Despite their win, PSG were the worst offenders last night, even the Great One was poor.

There is now a real prospect that no English side will make it to the semi-final stage of either European tournament for the first time since 2003, when Liverpool were last to drop out, at the quarter finals stage of the Uefa Cup……..  You’re welcome.

What struck me most watching last night’s game was Sky TV’s Gary Neville pondering how long PSG’s star players would languish in such a poor league.  This is the French league we’re talking about here, not the Scottish Premiership, it’s Paris, not the ‘New East End’!

It’s easy to mock Neville but he asks an interesting question, will players always migrate to a higher-profile league?  If so, there are more clubs than just Celtic in need of structural change.

No Waddell was mib on st Patrick’s day. Ill never forget young’s first Celtic game, May 1995 Hampden season v Partick. He sent Peter Grant off and was Partick’s man of the match as they beat us 3-1.

Season 96/97 Young surpassed himself at Ibrox when we played the Orcs. He sent off Tosh McKinlay for handball when a zombie walloped the ball off him at point blank range 5 yards away. Di canio said in his autobiography it was the most blatantly biased refereeing display he’d seen.

SFTB mentioned earlier a few CQNers who have chosen to stop posting. I would hazard a guess that they have so chosen because of the increasing number of posts which have little or nothing to do with Celtic.

  11. On the drive back from my hospital visit, I caught the last section of a Radio 5Live programme where Sir Clive Woodward interviewed Joey Barton.

Now, if that had been advertised, I would not have tuned in but, as I did not recognise the voices it took me 5 minutes to realise that the scouser was Joey B and I found out at the end that the rather wooden interviewer was the Rugby man.

I was hooked after 5 minutes by the candid, bombastic, judgemental, aggressive, generally misanthropic world view that Joey has developed. It was a fascinating, captivating interview despite all the baggage that Joey brings into play.

    Among other things, Joey reckons…

Swalex is not a coach and could not handle a training cone.

England are beaten before a ball is kicked at this year’s World Cup because of their modest estimation of themselves.

Wayne Rooney was more talented than Cristiano Ronaldo but has not worked at his game the way that CR has.

Joey is a fascinating, infuriating character. I know many will not want to give him any house room because of his past but he is more than just a thug with no redeeming qualities. In fact, he is quite hard on himself and his fellow pros. I ended up having a grudging admiration for how open he was though I disagreed with every 2nd thing he said.

The interview is available on 5Live podcast if you want to hear his unique views on the world of professional football.

Does the debate about whether to ban non football related posts replace the famous cheese and toast quandry, and is the post calling for this a football post itself, or should it be banned?

I followed Joey Barton for quite a while on Twitter.

I found him to be reasonably intelligent and he articulated himself well.

I enjoyed the manner in which he confronted the establishment and wasn’t afraid to argue his point regardless of how unpopular it was.

Despite that I eventually couldn’t get over the fact that he’s a thug with a grossly exaggerated ego.

I heard all the Barton interview. Itv was good radio. He is a clever lad who has an awareness of his issues.

    Scathing on the FA.

He is also now doing a philosophy degree.
