Languishing in Paris

710

When watching Real Mardrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich it is easy to be discouraged at the gap between where we are and the quarter finals of the Champions League, but despite the many hundreds of millions spent on both Paris St Germain and Chelsea, the standard of passing and decision making throughout their game last night was abysmal.   Despite their win, PSG were the worst offenders last night, even the Great One was poor.

There is now a real prospect that no English side will make it to the semi-final stage of either European tournament for the first time since 2003, when Liverpool were last to drop out, at the quarter finals stage of the Uefa Cup……..  You’re welcome.

What struck me most watching last night’s game was Sky TV’s Gary Neville pondering how long PSG’s star players would languish in such a poor league.  This is the French league we’re talking about here, not the Scottish Premiership, it’s Paris, not the ‘New East End’!

It’s easy to mock Neville but he asks an interesting question, will players always migrate to a higher-profile league?  If so, there are more clubs than just Celtic in need of structural change.

Pity Pirlo doesn’t have Scottish relatives who could persuade him to have a year or two at CP. He could bring his mate Buffon with him. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Hope Juve win this trophy – final is at their ground. Now why is that familiar?

Over 30 years after the event the lack of understanding from the British establishment in relation to the Irish hunger strikes is incredible.

Sunderland have been fined by the Premier League after they fielded an ineligible player in four league matches earlier in the season.

Striker Ji Dong-Won, 22, played against Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United before Sunderland informed the Premier League they had made an administrative error.

It is understood they were made aware of the error in December and Sunderland settled the fine in early 2014. The club will not be deducted points.

Imagine if this happened in Scotland – and involved (add name as appropriate) FC ?

  7. Juventus unlucky there – that kind of challenge on the GK is normally OK and the goal would have stood in Scotland.

SFTB and HT – I never thought there would be a subject where I would vehemently disagree with both of you.

But come on – Joey Barton? You’re not taken in by that cod philosophy “oh let me quote some Nietzsche” are you?

  9. Willie Young was indeed the ref when Tosh got sent off. He failed to notice Jorg Albertz tramping on Brian ONeils neck and a stonewall penalty when Di Canio was brought down. That clown Gordon Smith claimed he played advantage. He wasn’t the worst all the same. He had the balls to send off that mutant Scott Wilson in the 5-1 game.

  10. Phylis D

I think HT and myself both made it clear that we were unconvinced by him and that a lot of Joey’s issues remain unresolved.

I believe he is genuine about wanting to improve himself. It’s just that he reads a little and thinks he knows a lot stright away.

    Still, fascinating more than admirable.

I do not like to highjack the blog or ask for anything, but I know how well people on here have aided others in the past and I would be grateful for just a minute of your time:

Earlier this year my dad was admitted to hospital after suffering from stomach pains and cramps from New Years Day. His symptoms worsened over a number of weeks until a GP finally checked him in to Wishaw General for some tests.

Going by the symptoms the doctors initially thought he had gall-stones, then when that was ruled out they checked for ulcers. Cultures and blood tests both showed that there was ‘nothing sinister’ but one of the doctors knew there wasn’t something right and pushed for a keyhole procedure to examine the area. It wasn’t until then that they discovered cancer in the pancreas.

For those that don’t know, and it will be many, Pancreatic Cancer is the 5th biggest killer in terms of cancers in the UK. 5 year survival rates are under 3% and most people diagnosed only get 3-12 months. The signs do not normally show until the cancer has spread and by then it is too late to operate. Chemotherapy and all other known traditional treatments do not work.

Although such a big killer, and one with no screening method or effective treatment plan, funding for treatment and research in the UK is under 0.9% (compared to other types of cancer) and decreasing. This is a fraction of other types of cancers which receive more media attention.

We are all obviously devastated but trying to remain positive and pursue any treatment option out there that the NHS will not offer.

But this is bigger than my family, this is a seriously underfunded and under-researched disease in an age where developments happen every day in other types of cancers.

There is a petition which I would be grateful if people would sign, to encourage the government to at least discuss improving funding and knowledge of this horrible condition.

Please sign it if you have the time: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/48389

  13. And Willie Young would have sent off that mutant Wilson if that game was poised at 1-1…..

    Hmmmmmmm…….Aye right!!

Young’s brethren would be proud of his behaviour as a ref.

It is a thought. Has Lord Haughy sponsored the SFA do you know?

If so a letter to him asking if he is happy to continue his association with a organisation held in such low esteem in integrity terms might be worth the sending.

I worked with a Deadclub fan who became a referee. Openly spouted that he was doing it because too many Tims were joining the refereeing fraternity.

He was tacitly acknowledging that their position of influence was under threat.

Any honest, fair-minded person becoming a referee is to be lauded not ridiculed.

A few years ago i went in to a bookies in Busby on a Saturday morning to put a coupon on,in walks a then Grade 1 ref (sic) and starts filling in his football coupon.I seen the guy a few hours later at CP, he had a whistle in his mouth and tight shorts on….
