Languishing in Paris

710

When watching Real Mardrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich it is easy to be discouraged at the gap between where we are and the quarter finals of the Champions League, but despite the many hundreds of millions spent on both Paris St Germain and Chelsea, the standard of passing and decision making throughout their game last night was abysmal.   Despite their win, PSG were the worst offenders last night, even the Great One was poor.

There is now a real prospect that no English side will make it to the semi-final stage of either European tournament for the first time since 2003, when Liverpool were last to drop out, at the quarter finals stage of the Uefa Cup……..  You’re welcome.

What struck me most watching last night’s game was Sky TV’s Gary Neville pondering how long PSG’s star players would languish in such a poor league.  This is the French league we’re talking about here, not the Scottish Premiership, it’s Paris, not the ‘New East End’!

It’s easy to mock Neville but he asks an interesting question, will players always migrate to a higher-profile league?  If so, there are more clubs than just Celtic in need of structural change.

Any honest, fair-minded person becoming a referee is to be lauded not ridiculed.

I have posted on here already about sweeping statements about referees. I was an amateur referee for 18 years and one of the 90% of non-listed officials who allow kids, school, 5-a-side, youth and amateur football to take place.

There is a world of difference between that and the senior list – the 200 + SFA officials.

It’s like comparing the CQN golf outing with the PGA and the Majors – same rules, same topography but a completely different set up.

Can’t become a Grade 1 ref without a supervisor (retired ref) pushing you and you have to ‘do it their way’ to progress, whereas I was never subjected to that regime and could apply my own interpretation and sense of fair play – and made a decent fist of it.

BCW – thanks for you input – there are hundreds of decent, well intentioned referees in Scotland.

I will make no comment about SFA referees – I could be on here for days on end.

  16. Surprised at the narrow margin of victory by The New One at Aintree today.

Didn’t see the race so don’t know if it got hampered anything like the way it did when it should have skooshed the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham last month.Definitely the moral victor that day.

Unfortunately my bookie does not pay out on such moral victories and wasn’t going to recoup much today @4/9 favourite.

Looking forward to Aintree tomorrow and always find it is a much better dayooooot than Cheltenham.

    How was the March?:-)

  19. Good evening everybody.

The game between Chelsea and PSG made me think about our fine institution. Would I take the money from a loathsome individual or regime if Celtic could challenge for the European cup again? I would love to think that I would refuse it, given the choice, but the way football is going, why not take it? Look at recent events from Spain: the notion that Barcelona were whiter than white was always naive. Yet I didn’t expect them to be even worse than I thought they were previously. I am too young to have seen any European trophy end up at Celtic. That being so, I would probably not baulk at Celtic winning such a trophy in the un-organic manner in which Chelsea and others have won it. Yet I still can’t make up my mind. Would I accept a Man City scenario…

Unpopular point, but I feel a little sorry for decent Chelsea fans. A minority of morons tarnished their image. Most Chelsea fans have no interest in Rangers in my experience. I have met some really decent fans of theirs and they were surprisingly kind. Hating Chelsea for Rangers links is Old Firm thinking.

Just interested in this ‘swinging dick’ remark. It doesn’t sound like an insult to me. More of a compliment.

  24. John O’Neil….

My thinking on Chelsea fans is coloured by personally witnessing their behaviour towards a couple of young black guys on a London tube one day.Was beyond disgusting and would have made even Sevco fans blush.

Inorganic or Un-organic……they’re all the same to me.

Amazing how you never hear them criticise the son of Israel oligarch who raped the Russian Aluminium deposits to fund his project in West London.
