Legia looming

847

Celtic have played four games against Polish opposition, losing to Legia Warsaw and Wisla Crakow in 2006 friendlies, drawing thanks to a very late Kenny Dalglish goal against Wislaw, before losing the return game. We’re going to need to break new ground if we’re to reach the Champions League play-off round.

As I predicted, you can ignore the 1-1 draw with St Pat’s last week, Legia are a far better team than that result suggested and it now looks like they have thrown off their summer slumber.

Time to hit form, Celtic.

The policy of RCs in Royal family is expected to change. Indeed, Lizzie and the new Pope are understood to have had many positive discussions about the future of their churches working together.

*Not just the new Holy Father but also JPII and Benedict. The Royal Family in no way reflect the “walkers”…white trash. I believe that the head goatshaggers’ wife and younger son are converts.

Over here at one time a Catholic could not be mayor or chief of police in the country’s largest city….not so now as the country has moved on….so should we Scots.

so what has happened now… I hope this is not an excercise in expectation management it looks a bit like getting our excuses in early. We are either a CL group stages team or we are not.

I will be sorely disappointed if we dont qualify, especially after reading about how we are going to be so much fitter and faster and furiouser

  6. Football has no gaurantees. If LW are better they go through to the next round and we go out of the CL and try our luck in the EL for this season.

Blaming the CEO. manager, Murrayfield or anything else is a bit embarrassing. I don’t think the LW squad have the European experience or the caps our players have so I would like to think our players will have the experience to take them over the two legs. The panic on here is similar to last season after we lost an away leg in Khazakstan against a very organised ordinary team.

Don’t panic and get behind the Bhoys please.

What has Ronnie said that makes you think he’s getting his excuses in early? I don’t think I’ve read any quote from him that suggests that?

  8. Since getting KO’d from the CL last season we have lost Samaras, Ledley and brought in Griffiths, Johansen and Gordon.

    Stronger, weaker or no change?

In terms of CL then we’re probably slightly weaker (based on experience as much as anything) but not significantly so that we should be getting KO’d in the qualifiers this season.

  9. tamrabam

“then we read we cant expect to beat a polish side (despite the financial advantage we have over them)”

I think its a question of words and their meanings.

Nobody has stated that you cannot “expect” to beat Legia, in fact those neutrals, the bookies, will have us as strong-ish favourites.

What is evident is that you cannot “guarantee” a win over Legia. The teams we meet at this level are teams who, if we played them over 10 games, might sneak a win or two and would definitely not suffer 10 straight defeats. Legia is a more highly rated team, from amongst the group we could have got, and would be highly likely to get 2 wins and a couple of draws in any 10 game run with us. If they were in the SPFL, they would finish well ahead of Aberdeen, United, St. Johnstone or Motherwell.

Therefore, the prospect of a shock defeat is very much there. It would stll be an upset and a shock but it would not be beyond our reckoning. In the CL qualifiers we are playing against hungry ambitious clubs. If we are 10% off our game or 10% unprepared, or they play 20% above their average, we can encounter trouble.

The great thing is that, despite regular and undiscouraged warnings about our likely qualifying failures, we have managed to do so recently with admirable regularity. However, we are still just a lowly pot 4 team, and our absence from the CL would just be the absence of another pot 4 team i.e. no biggie and easily replaced, in the eyes of UEFA and most football fans.

That is what we are up against.

  10. Ah what a magnificent job of expectation management celtic have done on us. We now have expectations that are so low that people are almost praising celtic for not buying anyone.

We pay the season ticket money and they dont spend it! We are told we need that money just to keep the lights on (Kojo). Its nonsense.

The only reason why we are fearful of Legia, despite being massively wealthier than them, we dont ultilise our wealth because for some reason we are saving up………

Are we saving up, you may be correct. I don’t know.

If so, you again ask why? could it be for playing in a bigger stage. Again I don’t know.

But what is increasingly obvious is that PL & the board need to outline our future strategy.

Apologies for sounding like a long playing record but this issue just will not go away. I cannot, and refuse to believe at this moment that our future strategy is plod on until a reincarnated ” Rangers” arrive for normal service.

If last night demonstrated anything, it is that from a Celtic perspective we do not need the “Old Firm”; we are a progressive modern team that has evolved with the times. We remember our history with pride but are not shackled to historic dividedness.

We epitomise much that is good about Glasgow and must look forward. Not backwards.

We should have enough to see off Legia but will have to be at our best.

We certainly need our best 11 out there which means telling Southampton, Sunderland and the rest that FF and VVD are going nowhere at the moment.

  22. Bom dia,

Well San Lorenzo absolutely tawed Bolivar last night, 5-0. So that’s them pretty much ensured a place in the final.

Dunno what happened to Bolivar’s usually solid “boxy” defending, but they were just tore apart last night. Chief architect being veteran Pipi Romagnoli who seemed to be involved in everything.

Atletico-MG (the Galo) were taken to extra time by Lanus last night before they managed to lift the South American SuperCup in a close 4-3 match. Galo are the current Libertadores holders.

Elsewhere, in the madness that is Brasileirão Serie A, out of the 20 clubs in the league. Ten are now on their second manager this season. And we’re only at Round 10 of the championship.

However, not to be outdone by that – with the announcement of Wanderly Luxemburgo’s appointment yesterday, Flamengo are now on their third manager this season. Luxemburgo has managed over 30 clubs, in his 20 year career, including two previous stints at Flamengo.

If ever there was a good example of the lack of foresight in Brasilian fitba……….

The thing that concerns me is the lack of knowledge we have on Ronnies tactics away from home in a nick out round.

Will he still adopt the same attacking policy or go for caution. Hopefully he doesn’t think this squad are capable of going to Warsaw and coming back with a win with an all out attacking pressing approach.

I don’t think we will see Forster or van dyke sold until after this round as the sides interested in both are not involved in European competition.

Well put. I’m by no means a royalist and actually find the idea of an unelected Head of State in the twenty first century bizarre. I also find the notion that someone is born intrinsically superior to others silly. But in terms of the current Queen I see her as a decent enough woman in her 80’s and have no gripes with her personally.

How anyone can think last night’s events at Celtic Park were a “stain” on our history because of her attendance is beyond me.

Her recent visit to Ireland doesn’t stop some unthinking people yelling “f@@ the queen” after a few shandies. Ask then their particular grievances about the Queen and they usually go quiet.

Legia seems like a difficult tie for us, albeit one we ought to see out provided we turn up with the right approach.

We often hark back to former days in European competition, and UEFA would do well to remember that in 95/96, the quarter finalists included Ajax, Panathinaikos, Nantes, Spartak Moscow and Legia, with no German, Spanish or English teams making the semi final stage. 20 years on, such a situation would seem at the “forget it” end of unlikely. Nevertheless, Legia have history, and I’m quite sure they look upon matters in the same way as many of the bigger clubs from peripheral Europe.

Last season Legia did creditably in the qualifying phase. They beat New Saints 4-1 on aggregate, then put out Molde on away goals; 0-0 in the 2nd leg at home enough after a 1-1 away.

They were unseeded in the play-off, drawing Steaua. The first leg in Bucharest ended 1-1, a good result for Legia, but in the 2nd leg they lost 2 goals in the first 9 minutes, and although they got it back to 2-2, went out on the away goals rule.

Their Europa League campaign was a disaster though, with 5 straight defeats before a final game win away to Apollon.

They won their league last season by 10 points from Lech Posnan, winning 20 and losing 7 games along the way. Decent.

They have a very experienced squad, with 11 players having more than 20 European matches under their belt, and 3 with in excess of 50 European games. The players are drawn from many Eastern and South Eastern countries.

They are no mugs, irrespective of finances or fame.
