Legia looming

847

Celtic have played four games against Polish opposition, losing to Legia Warsaw and Wisla Crakow in 2006 friendlies, drawing thanks to a very late Kenny Dalglish goal against Wislaw, before losing the return game. We’re going to need to break new ground if we’re to reach the Champions League play-off round.

As I predicted, you can ignore the 1-1 draw with St Pat’s last week, Legia are a far better team than that result suggested and it now looks like they have thrown off their summer slumber.

Time to hit form, Celtic.

Agreed. It’s not quite make do and mend but Strachan had it right comparing us v Arsenal as water pistols v machine guns. (Financially). We would need to win SPFL title about 50 times to earn what a relegated EPL team gets in one season.

  2. Thought the opening ceremony last night was awesome and so proud to see our Celtic Park logo blazing in the background.

    Thought wee Hazel did a reasonable job giving us some info on the various countries and her throw-away line on Montserrat was a classic;

” The only other country in the world where they have a national holiday on St Patrick’s day.”

Wee Fergus must have been so proud that his vision back then enabled all this to come about!

    Hail! Hail!

  3. are the club going to ask the fat Tongan ‘boxer’ for the strip back?

I could have sat on the couch and munched chips all weeks then tried to scrounge a free strip, but i think i would have got a custard pie (Mmmmmm)

Was at the St Pats v Legia game last night.

Although the result was 5-0 St Pats were very poor.

Legia’s goals came from playing the ball over the top to a winger who sat on the shoulder of the St Pats right back — worked every time as the defender was poor. Lustig or Matthews wouldn’t be so easily taken.

Apart from that the 1st half was pretty dire with no real spark from either team.

Celtic should have no problems with Legia who played with 3 across the back last night and were unconvincing when tested.

I think Legia are a step up from Karagandy. They come from a country with a much lengthier and more sophisticated football history than Khazakstan. We were certainly shocked by Karagandy’s very direct long ball and long throw approach but I felt a combination of playing two new and unfamiliar CB’s gave Karagandy the lead and confidence to come and play a courageous 2nd leg defence of their lead.

Karagandy went on to finish bottom of their Europa Group gaining two points for two home draws. They are drawing 0:0 going into the 2nd leg of this year’s Europa quallies with a Lithuanian team Atlantas. They are ranked at 230 in Uefa rankings compared with Legia’s rank of 120. We may well get a more familiar orthodox game with Legia but it will be tough.

There will be no happyclapper wake-up if we lose to Legia. The happyclapping side have always acknowledged the possibility of Celtic losing, no matter who we buy or sell. It is hte mineshafting side who, against all the evidence of history from 1975 to 2000, who dismiss these teams as pub teams and easybeats. That is the side who have to wake up – we are not in the 60s any more.

  6. a light insanity on

In Hamburg. Helluva thunderstorm. Rain bouncing. If you are going to game be prepared.

  7. Legia could provide the punch on the nose that wakens all the hahahappy-clapping dreamers up. I hope not though.

I understand what you are saying but paying £6m for which player? Who is this player you can put a price tag on? Do you have someone in mind?

I hear this type of thing all the time. We should buy a £Xm player. Why? Signing a player who may be £2m but play like a £6m player is much better value. Look down South at the numbers. Clubs are paying almost £10m for guys who are not even worth a 10th of that. We don’t have the revenues to compete in the market for players at £5m+

We have to scout players and be ahead of our competitors and get their signature. Sure they won;t always work out but our success rate is better than 50% and many, many clubs would be delighted with that.

Singings will not always work out whether they are free or come in for £50m. Buying a player for £6m as someone described earlier comes with risks around upsetting better performing members of the squad and also they may get injured, lose form or just be plain rotten. We have had our fingers burned in the past. I thought Gravesen was a great signing. It just didn’t seem to work out that way.

As I have said many times I prefer to enjoy watching the team and remain positive about the future. It’s just the way I choose to support the club. Being negative makes me miserable and certainly doesn;t help the club. Just my take on things. I guess you could label me a happy clapper.

  10. Legia are not in our league, we will beat this team don’t worry about that, why all the panic? Cause they beat st, pats 5-0 gimmi a break, it’s a step up for them not us, oh I hope the players don’t come in here, honestly some have no idea of the power of positive thinking, get a grip Ffs.

    13:22 on 24 July, 2014,

I’ve always thought we are open to the long crossball, as our fullbacks are used more like wing backs, especially when we are pushing forward.

Hopefully, it’s been picked up on. HH

  13. The team is shaping up nicely, was impressed with our first half at Murrayfield and our second half in Iceland. I doubt it very much that Lenny’s set up would have scored 5.

We need a right winger and a DM that can read the game,CM,BK,NB are not good in defence.

Legia will be tough but if we can plug the gaps in front of the back four then we will do well, have a feeling TW might get a shot on the right side.

I’m not entirely sure where the Velodrome would come under but it’s definitely not Barrowfield.

Barrowfield is behind the Celtic End and doesn’t stretch across London Rd.

  15. TD 67.

Optimism is good, however all we are asking is that we prepare correctly and we utilise our current players to the full.

It would be foolish to indulge in potential player movements with such season defining games to come.

Professionalism is what we demand and the old adage still rings true.

Fail to prepare, then prepare to fail.

    HH.

  16. Hamiltontim,

You are right that Barrowfield is behind the Celtic End but where the Velodrome is now was also Barrowfield back in the day. My granny was born there. It stretched along that side of London Road to where the Celtic Social Club is. Then, it became Dalbeth. The other side is still, I think, Newbank and Lilybank.

Expecting a tough game does not equate to being fearful. There is a line to be held between being confident of victory and dismissing your opponents as pub teams or fodder.

I hope our players are confident without complacency, respectful of their opponents but not fearful, and ready for a tough match so that they will be surprised if it turns out to be easier than that.

  19. I’m past caring about new players.. We need a new league … I think that is the only thing to fully engage the fan base.

We can never impact CL while playing in Scotland.

If we were to be given a glimmer of hope that we would get access to EPL then we could start setting realistic aspirations. Right now the only players coming to Celtic are those seeking a stepping stone which is why it is in our interest to sell our best players as soon as we get a decent bid. It will incentivise players considering Celtic to jump on board.

Sadly we have outgrown Scotland to a ridiculous degree. It’s not good for Scottish football. Without Celtic the league would be a close fought affair between Aberdeen DUFC, Murderwell and eventually RIFC…

I didn’t say any of the above, all I was saying is why the panic, if a player goes, he goes, if a player gets injured he gets injured, deal with it, get on with it, stop putting up fences, I’m confident no matter what happens, and we all know sh!t happens, it’s part of life, no drama needed, get fecked right inti them.

They weren’t cultured granted, but all round more awkward, hence the 2-0.

Besides that Celtic are better defensively in a back five sense, than when they

were beaten by Karagandy. and we shouldn’t be ‘shocked’ in Warsaw

Anyway it’s a battle of pot 4’s, and that is the extent of the board, and the limit of expectation

    from our support.

  23. Legia are at our level.

  29. CultsBhoy,

You are correct, we need a new environment. It is so obvious.

Maybe we are a victim of our own success. Regardless, we need to move and the board must outline our future strategy.

We are so far ahead of our rivals off the park that if it were a boxing match it would be stopped.

To me our magnificent arena again demonstrated that. Realistically could any other teams stadium have come even close to hosting the most prestigious live event ever staged in Scotland.?

However until we seal our move the CL qualifiers are our season defining games.
