Lions Roar, the last giant standing, CQN Mag is out!

824

Issue 16 of CQN Magazine is out today and (in my never humble opinion) is our best yet.  We are right up to date, with coverage of the Scottish Cup final.  Phil Mac Giolla Bhain gives historical perspective on Celtic’s position as the last apex in the game.

You’ve ready plenty of great stories of how people got their tickets Seville and we bring you a very Celtic story on how one man got his.  Did you notice we’ve mentioned Willie Wallace a bit recently?  Some of the reasons why are covered by two of Scotland’s best writers, Brogan Hogan and Archie MacPherson, excerpts of their contributions to Heart of a Lion are here for you.

There are lots more great articles….. including our cover theme, The Lions Roar Again Event.  The remaining Lisbon Lions are back at Celtic Park for a Q&A and Lisbon film show, in aid of 1254125.  The first event was one of those special Celtic occasions, if you missed it, make sure you get along this time.

Opportunities like this don’t come along often.  Book your tickets for the event here, bring the family.

DON’T TRY TO READ THE MAGAZINE FROM THE GRAPHC BELOW, that is just a teaser.  For a proper read, go here.  Use the navigation buttons at the bottom to flick through pages or zoom in.

    Squire Danaher

I am not too sure that I would be so quick to be damning in my view of Dalglish and his departure from Celtic.

He certainly wanted away to try his hand in what he considered a bigger environment, however what is not considered is the backroom posturing at Celtic park at the time.

Stein is injured in the car crash– however even before that football and footballers were changing with there being a far greater degree of commercialism being introduced.

At Celtic park, the board were not ready for that– and in fact the death of Bob Kelly saw a security blanket taken away from Stein to a certain extent.

With Kelly, the board had a certain biscuit tin mentality– without him that mentality grew even deeper and more miserable.

With Kelly, the board would protect the club at all costs– such as fining the players unjustly after the Racing Club “shame” in Argentina in 1967– without Kelly, the board grew ever more distant from the man to man management of the playing staff.

In short, Stein was the jam in the sandwich between the players and the board and he did not get on with Desmond White.

You mention the goal tally of Glavin, Craig and Dalglish one year compared to the next.

The departure of KD was not solely to blame for change as at the time I am told the dressing room was not a happy place.

That would eventually make itself obvious with the departure of Stein himself and that infamous photo– together with the shocking decision to offer him a pools job!!!

The arrival of Billy McNeill would not steady the ship immediately as he was relatively new to management and did not have the persona or presence to stand up to what was in all truth a thoroughly dreadful board.

With players such as Doyle, Craig, Glavin, Burns, Conn , McGrain, McAdam, Aitken and so on they were good enough to see off any team in Scotland– Rangers only came to the fore because they were together and better organised– nothing else.

I know for example that as soon as Ronnie Glavin became embroiled in the fire allegation he was “put on ice” by the club and I am pretty certain he was encouraged to “move on” anywhere just in case the club was embarrassed.

There was no interest in whether he was innocent or not– just get rid of him just in case– and nothing to do with his playing ability.

Yet the players themselves sort of told a different story.

Check the stories of Tommy Burns, Johnny Doyle, Davie Provan and others going down to see Ronnie after he had moved to Barnsley– they knew what was going on and Big Billy was powerless to stop it.

As for Ronnie himself– he was loved in Barnsley and remains a hero at Oakwell. He loved the area so much he never came back– but we lost a player– and a team.

The management and Governance at Celtic park after the Stein crash was a disaster at best– but even describing it as just a plain disgrace would showing considerable charity.

Narrow minded short sighted incompetence doesn’t cover it either– that is being far to nice!!!

  5. Many of us were Born to be Celtic fans and will always be so. We had no decision to make.

Some are not but come from other countries and fall in love with our club.

Some are born in the West of Scotland with a natural affinity to the Dark side but also fall in love with Celtic.

People like Jock and Kenny made a decision and never regretted it.

Both are legends for that decision and their contribution to our history.

  7. Guys

Yesterday I asked question about your thoughts on Henrik Ojamaa play. He signed for Legia Warsaw last night. Few of you gave interesting opinions. Today I had a call from guy who runs Legia supporters website. He knows that I know you and asked if I heard anything about Ojamaa play, what Celtic fans think about the Estonian?

Can I pass your opinions from yesterday to this guy for his article?

pmsl…I would never down the mans ability and the fact he was voted into our greatest ever 11 say’s it all, but his stint as part of the management team really took a lot of the shine, again in my opinion,a liverpool legend? certainly, celtic legend? nope not up there with the mcgrory’s, mcstay’s, johnstones or steins in our long and great history….

Reading the comments on Kenny Dalglish – legend or not?

Firstly I think the word ‘legend’ is , like ‘icon’ one of the overused wrods these days. Hard to define but I’d have thought it would have to apply to those who made a real difference (for the better) to Celtic and who also connected with the fans. Jimmy Quinn, Willie Maley, Patsy Gallagher, John Thomson , Jimmy McGrory, Charlie Tully, the Lisbon Lions, Big Jock, Danny McGrain and Henrik Larsson are shoo-ins. King Kenny was a great player – as was obvious from day one- and a credit to the club . No player’s value was illustrated more than when he left. We collapsed- mitigating circumstances as BHTR has outlined- but Kenny’s departure was overwhelmingly the key , on field , factor. For me he gets in the exalted legend list. Easy

Simple and straight answer is that of course you can pass on the information to your Legia Lions.

Zbyszek you my friend are one of the most respected posters on CQN and I don’t think you need to ask CQN. You are a part of Celtic Quick News Mr Z.

  22. Sitting here pondering whether tae watch Portugal v Russia or Czech Republic v Italy with the remote on previous channel mode when my son-in-law pops by to pick up his kids who stayed over last night.

Both his parents are from Dubrovnik and he tells me that the Croatia/Scotland game is on another channel, my reply was if Croatia don’t win by 4 clear goals then their coach should be fired.

Anyway I turn it over for the start and as the cameras pan in on the officials in the stand who do I clock but sour face Ogilvie and entourage, that’s your money, Scottish football public, he’s travelling on. He and his like are extracting the proverbial single fish from you.

As the national anthems are played several Scottish players aren’t singing that dreadful dirge penned by the Corries, no not the foreign players but 3 ex-huns.

IMHO Loch Lomond a Jacobite song should be the national anthem, especially the Runrig version.

OMG good goal for Scotland made by and finished by 2 Tims.

  23. BRTH Your comments on Ronnie Glavin reminded me of buying my first top in his shop. It was a Celtic one of course. His shop was in a really strange place. It was in, as I remember, a place that was without much need for a sport shop and was not particularly ‘tim friendly’. Given that he was involved with a slightly dodgy character, it wasn’t a surprise it burnt down. I wasn’t convinced it was Ronnie though as I liked him and he played for Celtic :)

  25. Hi, I would just like to point out a couple of things about Lou Macari.

    1. When Celtic played Man Utd in the Daniel Fergus McGrain Testimonial game at Celtic Park in the early 1980’s, I’ll never forget the reception Lou got from the fans, especially when he went over to the Jungle. Yes he might have left us for Man Utd under dubious circumstances but, I think that you’ll find that he wasn’t alone for company intermsof folk who have left the club, either by,working his ticket or, being maneuvered to the door by the directors.

    2. When myself and some friends went down to Old Trafford for Lou’s Testimonial in 1984, the week before we played Aberdeen in the SCF, we stopped off at a transport cafe and a, local hotel near the stadium, we mixed with Man Utd fans all the way to the game, singing together, getting photo’s took, swapping scarves, police getting their pics taken with both sets of fans, getting along like a house on fire until, some of the MU fans started singing about their soon to be new signing, Gordon Strachan…Celtic fans started booing and the MU fans couldn’t understand why he was being booed? Some Celt’s explained that he was a thorn in Celtic’s side and, not just from a playing perspective. Once the MU fans understood what was going on all was fine and dandy again. When we got to the stadium the atmosphere was brilliant, friendly, Celtic fans chanting “United”, and MU fans chanting “Celtic”. The game finished 1-1 with Tommy Burns(RIP) scoring for us. Lou Macari played for both teams and when he came out in the hoops again, the Celtic fans almost took the roof off. It was another great day to be a Tim.

    3. When Lou came to us as manager, we were on the life-support machine. A lot of Celtic fans on here ask for searching questions from the media re: the huns, when Lou took over the team hadn’t won anything for 6 years, and yet some of the more senior players in the squad were in asking Lou for a rise in pay ? Lou said he couldn’t believe what he was hearing ? Players who hadn’t given the Celtic fans a trophy – and they were wanting more money for failing them ? That was exactly the type of voice / attitude that the dressing room needed, I would say. anyway, Lou was forced to sell our top striker – Gerry Creaney to Portsmouth for £600k. Lou was given £100k to replace GK ? Whilst all this was going on, the Celtic support were getting organized to boycott the old board and, this were I think that wee Lou delivered a park to make the fans start their boycott quicker than it was taking to organize by, bringing in Wayne Biggins to demonstrate to the fans a sort of cryptic message – hurry up and get yer boycott’s underway or, signings like WB will be the order of the day !

    4. Lou got sacked by Fergus McCann I thought, far too early. I mean would you move yer family up north only to find that the Celtic Chairman had his mind made up that you were going? I also thought that Fergus brought in Tommy Burns as manager a couple of years too early! Who knows ?

Going now to watch the football.

    Haail Hail

    Bye, bye.
